The Journey From Family Scapegoat to Empowered Super Empath // The Journey From Family Scapegoat to Empowered Super Empath can be an arduous, difficult, and painful process. It can also be enlightening and empowering.
For those of us who’ve experienced being cast in the role of the family scapegoat, in a toxic and dysfunctional family system, the profound impact of that experience is negative and painful, to say the least.
In this video, I unpack the transformational journey required to go from being cast as the family scapegoat to becoming a fully embodied and empowered super empath.
I’m going to begin by delving into the characteristics of the scapegoat, the struggles they face, and the steps they can take to heal, and reclaim their power. Permanently.
Enjoy!

Hi Tamie, this is so my story! I left home at a young age, 17, because my family is very toxic, I had a miserable childhood, was poor, emotionally un-nurtured, and physically hit, often, I had to leave. This sealed my fate as the scapegoat. I wasn’t at home, like my siblings, I had escaped, which made me a target. Yes, as you said, lots of hurt in my part, I couldn’t understand why? The most painful encounter, I went home to see my mum as she was unwell, my brother as soon as I got in the house, said why are you here? No one likes you, no one wants you here, and proceeded to punch me in the stomach. 😢 I made sure after that, I only saw my mother when she went out shopping, and I’d meet up with her. Lots and lots of examples. I’ve literally cut them out now, I blamed myself for decades, it’s only recently I’ve realised it really was nothing to do with me? Thank you for this Tamie, got to say, I cried at listening to this, validation that these things happened? Is everything. ❤❤❤

Hey Susan, I was the scapegoat only my Dad was a professional and I had quite a lot of material things compared to my friends. This was a double edged sword because I appears spoiled to the external world unless they witnessed a family “ event”. I know I was identified and I understand your pain. I want to heal, set healthy boundaries, determination of safety v. Danger and self love. The work will be worth taking a realistic look at the past, myself and the quality life it brings.

I have three brothers and three sisters. I am the family scapegoat. When my younger brother got hurt riding his tricycle in the dark through the cow pasture, I was the one blamed and punished. When the same brother got hurt running in a department store, I got blamed even though I was in the changing room. As an adult, I am blamed for all the conflict with my older sister who is a narcissist who targets me. I went no contact with all of them in 2020 and have not regretted it. I wished I had done that a long time ago. I can honestly pick out all the dysfunctional roles my siblings played in the family. The thing about being a scapegoat is that you have no control over what people do. If you are a mascot, caretaker, lost child, etc, you can overcome those roles because they are based upon your actions. But a scapegoat is based on another's action. You can't overcome it because the abusers do not usually see what they are doing as being wrong. The only way to deal with it is to cut those people who abuse you out of your life.

Tamie, this was me almost all my life, the healing began when I experienced a dark night of the soul, which lasted months, and I awoke with forgiveness in my heart, for both myself and my abusers, a spiritual awakening kicked in, I had a succession of epiphanies and finally found what I had been searching for all my life.... Happiness, I had made the mistake earlier in life, to search for it outside myself, and to put it in the hands of others, not knowing at the time that true happiness comes from within, the healing had begun the road to my authentic self on the horizon, no more ulterior motives, no more expectations, manipulation was no longer a tactic I used. I opened up and let the truth in, it was liberating, and has allowed me to see things clearly. I am aware, and more awake than I have ever been. I resonate with this podcast, thankyou for affirming my journey.

Hi Tammie, THIS is exactly my story. I went no contact with my N-mother 2 years ago, and as you said, the attacks continued from a distance. The stress from a life time of abuse has caused me health issues. I'm proud of myself for finally walking away, but now I don't have family and it is very isolating. I'm aware now of how much of an impact this abuse has had on my life and self image. I'm 46, single, and now realizing I need to do inner healing. While I know I deserve good things and happiness and good friends and finding a healthy partnership and creating success and joy in my life... Somewhere, deep down, there is still a very wounded person who was abused, humiliated and hated for over 40 years and I don't know how to fix what's broken. I've been in therapy before for years. That helped me realize my mother is a narcissist and understand the family dynamic. Anyway, I really want to heal and move on from this. I haven't experienced a lot of the joys in life that I would have if I was raised in an emotionally safe and loving family, but I hope I can experience more joy and happiness in the 2nd half of my life. I'm glad your video popped up today. Thank you.

Everything in this video pertains to me. I was the only child and scapegoat. My father was my saving grace, but the mother wound and trauma was way more powerful than my Dad's love many times. I'm now 50 and needing to go through much-needed healing. Now my parents are gone and most of the people that caused me pain, are dead as well. I know therapy is much needed, but leaving my narcissistic husband of 17 years had me financially limited. Thank you so much for sharing and helping so many of us.❤

Thank you for this video. Came at an apt time for me. I love the part that referenced developing self-preservation. Of all the aspects of this journey, realising I had zero sense of self-preservation was the most painful. Developing that and seeing myself exercise it every time, has been an empowering feeling. Finally, being able to reclaim the power of 'I', was a huge one for me yesterday. I caught myself anticipating fawning for a future outcome I'm working towards. I paused and asked myself why I felt the need to put others on a pedastal for work I did? The most powerful thing happened. It dawned on me that I don't have to give away the glory of work I did, even though I felt inclined to. It's okay for me to bask and live in the glory of the reward for all my hardwork. It's okay for me and my life to be for and about me. But I also grieved the fact that this was something I had to go through the journey I did, to realise and reclaim. But the journey was worth it. This is a state I'm not used to being in. It's totally new and unfamiliar. But unlike in the past, I'm allowing myself go through the discomfort, and still choosing to keep going. I'm choosing not to sabotage myself. To better days ahead🥂. Peace be unto you.

This is how my entire life has gone from as little as I can remember but what’s really the hardest is when your family Takes your narcissistic abusive partners side and believes them over what you have said and you have been called a liar and the abusive one when yo😢had absolutely nothing to gain by telling the truth of what was happening but everything to loose I have been struggling and stuck in a debilitating depression for months now he’s gone but I will always be at fault for everything 😢😢trying to force myself now to get past horrific anxiety and panic attacks to just get out of the house plus I’ve gotten sober now and cut off all ties to the using world so I’m really feeling lost and alone and sad a sadness I can’t explain one that I’ve never ever felt before

Tari, I strongly encourage you to start attending AA 12-step meetings. Keep going until you find healthy meetings to attend regularly. Women-only meetings can be a very safe place. Doing so will not only support you in staying clean and sober but will also help with the sense of isolation as well as your ongoing healing and recovery journey. Just google meetings in your area and show up. You'll find the support you need there. 💕

While doing inner work I realized this dynamic and even ask my Mom what she thought about me being singled out like I was. She said, "I knew it was wrong. I just didn't know what to do.". Now I realize, after reading her memories, she was also a scapegoat. She was blamed for having too many children and making it hard for my father to support the family. She did know what to do. She took me out of the toxic situations as much as she could and solved the money problem too. She became a newspaper distributor and she and I drove all over the county in her brand new station wagon delivering newspapers and made them take care of their own needs. I was only 8 when I became a paperboy for her.

Hi Tamie, Thank you for explaining this toxic dysfunctional family system. This is my story and situation , …except for I think my toxic brother used to be the scapegoat years ago? Since my father passed away the roles seem to have reversed. I have also left my toxic Narc. ex-husband last year…so have become a scapegoat in both sides of my dysfunctional family system! I’ve worked out my mother has BPD/NPD too, my alienated son is also abusive, plus I can’t even trust my daughter who is trying to stay on the ‘good side’ of the Narcs.😢

And the weird thing is the morgority of those years. I was a people pleaser. Not any more. I know I'm an EMPATH because i can read a person so fast i can pick up on the tiniest put down or gas lighting i can tell right away if im liked or not. I really want nothing to do with anyone. Good morning! In my view, the pattern persists outside of your family of origin because you still carry the wounds of your experience with your family of origin. When you do your personal healing and recovery work as it pertains to being the family scapegoat, you'll find you are less likely to be targeted in the same fashion elsewhere. 💕
