The Jurassic Park Sequels Were Actually Pretty Good

The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III have developed reputations as underwhelming sequels to the outright masterpiece of Jurassic Park. While nowhere near as good as the classic original, both The Lost World and Jurassic Park III are pretty entertaining when taken on their own terms. I mean, they certainly aren't worse than Jurassic World: Dominion.

In The Lost World: Jurassic Park, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) summons chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) to his home with some startling information -- while nearly everything at his Jurassic Park had been destroyed, his engineers happened to have a second site, where other dinosaurs were kept in hiding. It seems the dinosaurs on the second island are alive and well and even breeding. Hammond wants Malcolm to observe and document the reptiles before Hammond's financiers can get to them.

It is almost a u-turn from the philosophy and ideals of both the Crichton novels and Spielberg films...that is to say a thoughtful sci-fi film that portrays the dinosaurs as ANIMALS not MONSTERS. It is almost completely devoid of the hallmarks that make a movie a JP movie. Essentially Jurassic Park in name only. It isn't a good film saved by even worse movies in the series following it.

@@unknownflickz1289 I disagree. Fallen Kingdom looked extremely ugly. The color grading spoiled any merit the cinematography would've otherwise had. The story was so dumb it hurt while never being extreme enough to be fun. JWD at least had David Brown and parts of the Malta sequence that were mildly interesting while FK had nothing. I can't rescue a single worthwhile character from that film, there isn't a part of the plot that isn't groan-inducing, and the thing is so riddled with plotholes to the point all events that transpire come across as viscerally arbitrary.

The lost world was a fantastic follow-up to the first movie. They gave us a wonderful recurring character that we love in Malcolm, they gave us a new phenomenal character in Roland tembo, they gave us more dinosaur action but still the Great practical effects and even better CGI. I would say where they went wrong, is rushing the San Diego stuff. Don't get me wrong as a kid and a huge T-Rex man I loved the San Diego stuff and I still liked it it wasn't horrible or anyting but it was definitely sloppy and rushed compared to the rest of the film. I think if they had taken another 15 to 20 minutes it would have been better but the stuff on the island was a perfect follow-up. If Jurassic Park is at 10 I would give everything on the island a 9. I would still give it an eight or eight point five overall though. Lost world is a fantastic follow-up to the first film. Jurassic Park 3 was horrendous. It was way too short, aside from Grant there were really no characters that were worthwhile, a lot of the CGI and even some of the animatronics looked really bad, there was no real climax, they made the raptors ridiculously and almost comically smart, but I will say the raptor designs looked amazing. I would say Jurassic Park 3 is probably the worst although Dominion is not far off. Jurassic world I would really really enjoyed. We got to see a working theme park and it was a really good introduction to more modern day Jurassic Park. The CGI was not very good. It was updated but it just looked like shit A lot of the time. But overall it was a great film. I honestly prefer fallen Kingdom to Jurassic world and I know that's not a popular opinion but I loved how it was more dark and gritty. I love that they used more practical effects. I thought it was a really good bridge film to the finale. I was really excited for Dominion I thought it was going to be great but it was awful. Despite having the original cast it was just not a good movie. I still would rate it better than Jurassic Park 3 but it was a huge letdown. I think Jurassic Park is the best and lost world is a close second. Jurassic world in fallen Kingdom I didn't think were as good but I still really enjoyed them. And Jurassic Park 3 and Dominion were embarrassments to the franchise.

if there was one thing that I think would have levelled up JP3 from just a fine movie to an actually good one would be to give grant being much more jaded about dinosaurs an actual arc. i know the movie isn't entirely concerned with themes and arcs and such and is much more interested in just being a monster flick, but even the best monster flicks touch on them. i think a version of this movie where Alan is wholly uninterested in palaeontology because, despite his love for dinosaurs, he can't look past the horrors of what happened on the island, who then sort of rekindles his interest by not just knowing exactly how to guide everyone through the jungle with his extensive dinosaur knowledge but also getting to rediscover the beauty of his favourite thing in the world alongside that terror (especially in the raptor scene, where he could become extremely fascinated by how intricately the raptors can communicate with him and each other)..now that's a movie i think would work.

So glad to see a video like this, Jurassic Park 3 has been my favorite since I was a kid and it introduced me to my favorite dinosaur, the Spinosaurus! So ofc it holds a very special place in my heart. Yeah, the plot is more simple than the others but that just adds to the charm of it imo, plus making Grant jaded about his experience on Isla Nublar and real dinosaurs as a whole fits, I love dinosaurs but I would feel the same after having several near death experiences on that island and if it tanked my expeditions to fossil sites since no one cares about them anymore, only about the real dinosaurs on the island. The original trilogy is amazing, having watched them during a marathon a few weeks ago when JP turned 30 years old. And while JW and JWFK are good films imo. (Fallen Kingdom is actually my second favorite film in the franchise.) I have yet to watch Dominion again...I don't wanna watch an almost 3 hour long movie that is the weakest of the entire series. But I have to finish that marathon someday.. Anyway, it was nice to see some appreciation and respect for the OG JP sequels. Thank you SO MUCH for this!

I just love that TLW and JP3 both pull inspiration from the source material. From the raptors in the long grass to the Trex maiming Ludlow for the baby in TLW to the birdcage sequence in JP3 that is similar to the sequence in the first book. Both the sequels take the source material and run wild with it, in a fun way. I’ve always been a bigger fan of JP3 over TLW as I’m just fed up of Trex at this point and spino was and still is one of the craziest dinosaurs in the fossil record

It was great growing up in the '90s without the internet and therefore without all the loud people who don't like the stuff I like creating a consensus that these things are supposedly bad. JP3's massive flaws are still there, yet the good aspects of JP3 that I enjoy are still giving me much more than the entire JW trilogy in its entirety has given me. As for TLW, well, it's a Steven Spielberg / David Koepp original, what more can be said. I love that film. Its only flaws are that it covers the same content as JP, so doesn't break any significant new ground, and that the mainland section at the end will never not feel artificially stuck onto the main body of the film. That's it. Great film. Mommy is indeed very angry.

Jurassic Park 3 is one of those movies that I watch every now and then if I'm really bored and just want to see something to do with the franchise since I'm such a fan I don't really know that I can call it good though, I do however think that the lost world is excellent, it just falls apart a bit in the last act. I saw TLW in the theater when it came out, I was 10 at the time. I think it was the second movie I ever saw on the big screen. I can't fight the nostalgia it's my all time favorite JP film. I know in my heart of hearts the original is a better movie, but damn, TLW just scratches that itch. I quote the movie damn near daily. I see more people just giving it a chance in recent years and it makes me so happy. JP3 is fun. Granted I didn't appreciate it for a few years after I first watched it. It's a theme park ride of a film. I find enjoyment in the 3 JW movies, but it's too bad we'll never get back that feeling of those first 3.

JP3 was all about being unpretentious. Straight storyline & it delivers for your money’s worth. Compare that to JWD - hackneyed plot, non essential characters who just fill screen time (that smuggler lady for example ), no sense of danger to either the characters or the viewer. Compare the Rex Camp attack scene in JP2 vs the allosaurus running amok in the city - which scene had more tension & feels actually dangerous?

The Lost World might not be technically as good as the first, but I love it just as much (and even more in some instances). I just like how DIFFERENT it is to the first, but still has the same vibes? I think the characters and themes are just so strong! Definitely a personal fave of mine. JP3 is just fun, with some really strong humour and arguably my favourite CGI in all the movies.

Jurassic Park III lands better than The Lost World for me because it's laypeople (and Grant) out of their depth, being tested by the island and coming out stronger (William H Macy fighting the Spinosaurus) whereas the cast of The Lost World are supposedly experts but make largely stupid mistakes and cause their own deaths. Grant telling the Kirbys to remain still and them just running away is less offensive than Malcolm calling out his love interest and Vince Vaughn for taking the baby dinosaur while being able to predict that the oarents woukd come and kndirectiy being the cause of death for Eddie Carr. That said, I enjoy most of the Ingen characters more than I like thr Kirbys. Regardless, JPIII is a lot more consistent throughout than TLW Also I really love how you can see in the movie Billy getting ripped in half by the Pterodactyls, but he's just fine at the end. I think that was because decided later that he should live, but it's very funny

I don't really remember any notable set piece or sequence from any of the modern sequels. I think that tells everything. They're bloated but still without any substance. The original trilogy had clear goals in mind and immensely strong production quality, and even with the less focused and narratively weaker JP3, it is still far more memorable than any of the -World movies that came after. The new ones are just the Marvel or Fast and Furious equivalent of what used to be a great and original franchise. Also JP3 raptors are goated.

I would say I prefered the originally planned ending to this sequel (where they bomb the island) than as you say, the seen it 50 times before standard KING KONG in civilisation ending. Who knows why Spielberg changed his mind, but I thought it was a mistake.

never heard of them bombing the island as the original ending. I've seen the Pteranodon Worker Village ending. Spielberg changed his mind because he wanted to do the King Kong thing. That's it. Also to honor Godzilla and the original The Lost World. The ending is fine (at the very least it makes that chapter a meaningful addition to the lore by contributing something it beyond an isolated expedition no one knows of) but I do agree that it lacks meaningful stakes for most of it which is partly why it is so maligned.

In the original novel it all ends with them bombing the whole Island, which to my mind would have drawn a line under it all. Also confirmed in the making of book, it WAS the original plan, but for what ever reason Spielberg overruled it opting for the tired King Kong fish out of water conclusion, instead. it may well have been for the cynical set up for a sequel franchise reason, though. Ever since I was around 6, I never understood the dislike for The Lost World or Jurassic Park 3 (well, for JP3 I understand it just a bit) But the fact that there are some people who put Dominion over The Lost World is beyond me. I mean shit atleast The Lost World still felt relevant to the source material. And the same goes to JP3, it stayed relevant while being different from the last 2. Watching The Lost World in the movie theater when I was 7 years old will always be one of the best memories of my life. I still maintain that The Lost World: Jurassic Park is a good movie. Not a masterpiece, but a good and enjoyable movie. Also I think the dinosaurs had their best look in that movie. In the first movie (for all its awesomeness) the raptors for example were just all brown and really plain-looking, while in the second movie they looked downright beautiful. And Jurassic Park 3 is, well, decent enough and enjoyable, though not up to the first and second movies' standards. Jurassic World is just a whole separate thing as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't have any heart. It's just a money-milking machine. And a poor-quality one at that. As I see it, the Jurassic Park franchise began in 1993 and ended in 2001. Anything made since then has just been a shallow, exploitative and inferior imitation.

2:30-2:37-The way I laughed. It's about time we see more people standing up for The Lost World (and JPIII, to a lesser extent, lol). The Jurassic World movies, aside from the first (for the reasons you mentioned), are truly hot garbage, and it blows my mind that it took seeing the trainwrecks that were Fallen Kingdom (or should I say TLW2-seriously, how so few people realized the number of elements taken directly from TLW is beyond me) and Dominion to make many fans of the franchise see that, "Oh, you know, TLW wasn't so bad." It's obviously flawed, and there are many ridiculous sequences within it (I'm looking at you, nonsensical ship massacre, trailer cliff scene, and the scene that shall not be named), but in my opinion, it is the only film across both trilogies that comes anywhere close to capturing the spirit of the original. To your point, there are fantastic setpieces (I agree that the long grass scene is one of the best in the franchise, and the tension of the first T. rex encounter is up there with the original T. rex escape) and a real sense of exploration and venturing into an unknown that Jurassic Park actually lacks (not that that's a bad thing; but the confines of the park setting make that harder to achieve).

no the pteranodon scene was from the original novel, complete with the aviary. The Lost World film pteranodon scenes were nothing like the JP novel nor JP/// sequence.

@@Romezguide Yeah it wasn't really a throwaway since they were completely different. Jurassic World was the one with the throwaway scene from the lost world. Literally stealing the helicopter battle and pilot impalement straight from the storyboards/script.

The Lost World is a good sequel (that could have been better if Spielberg wasn't such a stickler for hiding deleted scenes and breakneck pacing)....I can't agree on JP/// being good at all though. This is when the series fell off the rails and started betraying Crichton and then Spielberg's visions. Not to mention Johnston threw out a much better script/plot than the one we got weeks before production (they were writing on set as it was shooting using David Koepp's idea.). I like Johnston too (Jumanji and Captain America are classics...and stuff like Rocketeer and Vanilla Sky aren't bad....but that's also what makes JP/// so disappointing...we saw what he was capable of and it didn't show in JP///). The PteraNODONs with teeth (lul) were the best part of the movie though for sure. Also don't agree that JW was okay...but at least we are on the same page for FK and Dominion...yuck.

I never got the hate for The Lost World. I think my only issue with the sequels is that the dinosaurs are portrayed as serial killing monsters (JP3 did it worse). Where in the first film they were more like actual animals.

Ok for me I Do Enjoy All the Jurassic Park/World Squeal my tier list as shown here But The Lost world is my Least Favorite not because it was bad it just I Kinda Forget Some parts of the Film but the really good parts are Really good Fallen Kingdom is 5th But Only Cause Unlike Lost world I Know the Plot for Fallen Kingdom and I Get The Problem with being Stuck with both ending the Island and getting Dinos in the Mainland (But TBH My Man Problem with Fallen Kingdom is The Trailer Spoller Way Too Much ) Jurassic world is Forth these are the Ones I Really Like But the Only Reasons Jurassic world 2015 is Forth is Indominus Rex Had To Kinda Hard Carry the Entire Movie and While I Like Indominus Out of all the Canon Hybirds Indoraptor is Really Cool but Could Have Little More Fighting Terms of Dino V Dino Fight kinda wish we got more information about what was left of it And Scorpius is Amazing but Stuck in a Spinoff Series and Spinoceratops people just ingored Indominus Rex was the best one But the Movie Kinda Hard Carry of it being the Only Major Threat besides it would been cooler if Indominus had More Contral on the dinosarurs with Making More Dino Not Just Raptors Be on Indominus side to show more of it Intelligence but still great movie Dominion my favorite out of the Jurassic World Movies But Thats Cause The Locusts Don't Complete Hard Carry All the Dinosarur and the Giganotosarurs was More Realistic Behavior then the rest And I While Jurassic world Dominion final battle while not the better it make up for me with trying something different with how to bring back the Orginal cast and the Action Does Get Fast to each set but not too Fast to Balance it out All Alan talking about the Raptor attack method by going to the Neck and Malcom spear a Burn Stick at the Giganotosarurs A Based Momment in the Whole Jurassic world seriers JP3 Tho best Squeal of the Jurassic series The Spinosarurs was a Top Tier Dino We got Alan Back The Raptors in the Movie was one of the best ones Pteradon part was great And Eric was a Real great Kid Charaters in the Jurassic Park Seriers and the Movie Short Enough Not to Worry About feeling like a Drag Only down is the t rex spino fight causeing the Whole Toxic Fan war Worse then Goku vs Superman but Im not Blaming The Movie Entirely for that And Yes The First Movie Jurassic Park is My Favorite But rather not just say the same thing everyone else said about but I say this The reason i can handle werid stuff in stuff like in the Jurassic World Squeal is Purely Cause i First gotten into Jurassic Park NOT by the First Movie But with the Original Jurassic Park Arcade Video Game And Also Being More or a Video Game Enjoyer then A Movie Watcher And i get why people don't like Movie Squeals with there own reasons Just my opinion, all im saying is just my take not yours

I love all the Jurassic Park movies: 1.) Jurassic Park (1993; first movie) 2.) Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World 3.) Jurassic Park III 4.) And Jurassic World (2015 movie) Well except: "Fallen Kingdom" and "Dominion" (Because those last 2 movies ruined Jurassic Park franchise on purposed.)
