Another reassuring episode to hear as i navigate my way towards becoming an established author illustrator in my mid 30's. I'm in my 2nd year and went to the Bolonga fair that's just passed. As a beginner/ learner, I found it super informative. It was alot to take in but i also picked up points mentioned here - The difference in markets across the world, meeting face to face with people instead of being just another name/email. My 3 tips would be - 1. Do your research, events, workshops, publisher names, where do you fit, the halls are massive and there lots going on, it can easily be overwhelming without know why you are there and your goals. 2. Bring a notebook, stapler and pen, jot down everything you hear, people youve met, useful tips and notes as you go along, you will not remember everything. 3. Be open minded, have a structure, but make room for time to go with the flow. Some of the best things come your way unplanned and just being open to things. One of the big takeaways for me leaving Bolonga is understanding the importance of having clarity in myself first. Understanding what I like to draw and what my art looks like because there will be a market in another country in this world that will suit us. Too much to share in one comment! I'll be sharing the full experience and tips in my next youtube videos. Another thing the fair has reinforced, though i may have ideas, i feel the need to learn to execute them properly. And for that I cannot wait to join the fundamentals at Svs Learn (or should i say Art Bridge now?) Thank you for sharing your chats, they have been great sign posts!

@@SpottedJournal Going there is on my bucket list of things to do! For now, just online events (I'm kinda really far from Europe 😅)

Thank you so much for this interview! I'm also working for the german market, and I'm going to Frankfurt this autumn. I'm finishing the children's book we are going to present there... So very helpful conversation!! I really enjoy your podcast, and it's fantastic that you also take a look in the European industry. Thanks!

I've watched two unrelated videos in a row now, where the basis for going pro is having a (financial) support network that allows you to quit your day job and focus on building an art career full-time. This isn't a criticism or bitterness, I'm happy for the people that get the opportunity!! That said, do you have any existing or plans for episodes/interviews that talk about the transition into illustration while working fulltime to support yourself? Would love to know more about efficiently navigating that.

I wonder if this thing about how often do I draw applies. (I know it does). I draw mechanical drafting every day, for work, I carry my sketchbook everywhere and try to draw my own stuff whenever I can. Does that mean I'm not committed enough? lol TIA
