The Kickstarter Addict | Board Gamer Stereotypes

Kickstarter board games add a whole other layer of complexity to the usual board game collecting. Backing a campaign is basically pre-ordering a game way too early, so much so that when your board game package gets shipped and you unbox it, you probably already forgot what tabletop nonsense you even pledged in the first place! That new Witcher game looks so cool right now, it'll definitely be awesome when it finally arrives a year later! All those components, pieces, and minis are definitely gonna end up becoming an organizational nightmare, and who knows how many of these gamefound games are even gonna make onto the table for game night? But alas, FOMO on what the hotness on board game geek is becomes such a huge driving force to just backing more and more on kickstarter. Those backer campaigns are always so close to running out, and you can always just use those excess miniatures for dungeons and dragons right?

I just started browsing and backing on KS. Tbh, when I see games like root, blood rage, etc for double msrp and you can't find them it makes me want to back potentially great games so I make sure to get them while I can. So far I've backed Ice and orbidice.

Great video as always! I remember when I was in the board game club a few years back and the managers always got the latest good-looking games backed, even if we never played them. Although the kickstarer always sound so enticing, you NEVER know what you can get. You may get a gem like Gloomhaven, or a disaster filled with minis and nothing else like Batman Gotham City Chronicles. I am not one who suffers from fomo, but I couldn't resist backing Epic7 (I am a big fan of the mobile game visuals and characters its from), which reminds me of Gamefound since you mentioned it. Thankfully that's the only game I'll ever back, and hopefully it will be decent.

thanks nisa! Appreciate the comments as usual. If its not something really well known, and the rulebook isn't available to read, I tend to treat KS as a gamble. And I don't always like to gamble with my money. But for Frosthaven, that was an instant back for us :) -Ashton

I can see you must not be an addict. Here are some fixes that would be more addict-like. 1) An addict backs the campaigns right away for the first day bonuses. 2) An addict backs the campaign right away and tells themselves they'll cancel later if it doesn't have enough value in the unlocks, etc. 3) An addict would be watching various KZbin channels about what games are coming out. 4) An addict would be listed as a Superbacker. 5) An addict would already know what Gamefound is, because they've used it as a pledge manager. 6) An addict would be looking for games they could late pledge. 7) An addict would watch a video about a game that people are unboxing, and then be upset that they didn't back that game, and use that as the reason why they are backing future games. 8) An addict would have a spreadsheet of games they have backed, when they are suppose to ship, if they are late, the campaign page, the pledge manager, etc. 9) An addict wouldn't be using eBay to sell or trade their games. 10) An addict would be checking KS a few times a day and complain about why the publisher isn't posting enough updates, or about a recently unlocked stretch goal.

My friend is a total anarchist in any game they play. Whether it swapping sides mid-game, insinuating that me (the teacher) is cheating/ clarifying rules when convenient, or just trolling people, they like to shake up the game in unfortunate ways. Potential stereotype?
