The Snob | Board Gamer Stereotypes

Elitism? Gatekeeping? The board gaming snob refuses to lower himself to the levels of Catan or Apples to Apples, those aren't real tabletop hobby board games! Game nights must only have the most renowned board games, the highest rated board game geek titles, and no dice! His top ten games list is "objectively" the best, where only the most skilled of players will be able to win. Party board games aren't real board games, there's no strategy, complexity, or weight!
Light board games are completely pointless when there's always a superior, heavier cardboard upgrade! The Resistance? Nope, try Battlestar Galactica. Ugh, Fantasy Flight Games? Terrible rulebooks, terrible gameplay, too much rng and dice with not enough depth to the mechanics like all ameritrash board games. Every little piece, component, and design choice has to have the utmost standards of complexity and thought, and yes, even how you decide to paint your minis.

I don't do that myself but I have to agree that basically every 10/10 rating is undeserved. Same goes for any product really, most common ratings are 10/10 and 1/10 as if a decent product that you like has to be 10/10 and a mediocre product you don't like is 1/10... That's not how a scale works :D

I know this is supposed to be satire, but I've found many of these attitudes since I started out with this new hobby. I'm still relatively new to boardgaming and it's a bit frustrating when dealing with people like that. The amount of gatekeeping and snobbery I've come across has been very surprising, and not in a good way. 😖

i am been guilty of snobbery but its mainly about mainstream games like CAH, monopoly, sorry, werewolf, mafia, etc. When it comes to games like the burrito game (forgot the name) I just don't like dexterity games (games that pretty much only rely on speed and lucky draws). I am more than happy to play entry lvl board games with people like catan, ticket to ride, munchkin, and several others but I get annoyed when those are the only games people wanna play. I mean the type of players where the minute you breakout tiny epic dinosaurs or dominion they just go "ok guess I'll sit out".

The thinker (or better name) - someone who takes ages taking their turn; either from wanting the perfect effeciency, wasn't paying attention and missed what just happened, didnt use the time between turns to plan next move, ect. My S/O takes 10 mins per turn on Akrotiri.

The wet blanket is part of the dark triad of board gaming disorders. These individuals are known to share traits with other Cluster B board gaming disorders. Pointing out every flaw of the game's design, ruining the mood at a table by dragging their feet to play something everyone else wants, overanalyzing every turn, negative self-talk when things aren't going their way, and making exasperated sounds when someone else makes a good play. They are especially active when other people are conspicuously having a great time. Or how about people who go through extremes. Theyre passionate about a game for a while but burn themselves out on it and find every flaw the game has and use that as a pretense for why their new favorite game is so much better. Always chasing the perfect game so they can finally relax and have fun. Tragic, really.
