What Ray says about hard work and getting through to people is absolutely profound. It's amazing he knew this at such a young age. One of the best in music folks.

It is often said, that if musicians could express themselves in words, they wouldn't need music. This is a great example of two talented songwriters, tongue- tied with youth. And yet, they express themselves so eloquently in wonderful lyrics and music. Thank you for uploading this interesting glimpse of these brilliant brothers.

I thought they were both quite eloquent and well spoken and unlike today's dummies able to get through a sentence without saying 'like' 10 odd times!

@@randybackgammon890 I agree with CliffMcaulay. Although pleasanter than modern "pop artists", they were both struggling to express themselves in response to the man's questions.

Having seen these guys live in the early 80s, you have to have been there to see why this interview is so interesting with Ray. I've seen well over 200 shows in my day and to current. Trust me when I saw I've seen the best. The Kinks weren't my most favorite music then but I still rocked out to it and I always had seats close to the front, it was my mission😅 Performing live, there was literally NO ONE that could match Ray's onstage presence. No one. He was pure joy and feeling performing live, didn't stop moving or smiling until the arena was bright and silent. You KNEW you had gotten a legendary show. To see him so subdued here well, the contrast is so notable. I truly miss these fellas on a stage.

Wow. This man, Ray is so deeply within himself. It's a wonder he can perform in front of people being like that. Dave on the other hand, has a more open-ness to himself and being spoken to, he has a light, wheras Ray has the darkness. 🌌

If you saw themback in the day as I did more than once, you get it. I was right against that stage and his magnetism is absolutely unmatched. Since 1979, I've seen the biggest and best on a stage, most up close and to this day, Ray's electricity and joy while performing are easily unmatched. You felt every word he spoke and sang because HE did. I have to think that the tension within the band made for a better show with the Kinks, unlike seeing VanHalen in their prime. No doubt VH was exquisite but it was the Dave show every time, regardless of Eddie Van Halen's spectacular guitar work. The Kinks tension seemed to make everyone louder and more competitive playing live. Just an observation. I miss these two.

The interviewer was no fool, nailing Ray's detached, observational approach and I have to say this is the most interesting, well judged interview I have ever seen with the songwriter who, in my opinion, is probably the best we have ever had. Dave engaging also, a talented writer himself.

Truth but in that era, all of the interviewers had to be stoic to get fame it seemed. They were always older white men with an obvious element of cynicism. They missed out on some historical observations for sure. They had no use for "those hippies." It was going to upset their old person control 😊

I hate journalists that try to ask the most boring questions that you can't answer. "what influenced this song" ...everything? the time, the place, the emotion, the experience, the people I saw, the jokes I heard, the beer I was drinking, the song in my head, the clothes I was wearing, the mood I was in... How do you distill an experience and a nugget of a phrase or a poem you came up with into "the influence" Really unhelpful line on questioning. SQUARES man.

2:35 "you are not particularly involved or concerned with social injustices". What? Not heard of "dead end street" released in 1966? The lyrics of that song alone is waaaaay more political than what Beatles, Rolling Stones or Who has put together in all their career. Kinks have been banned touring in US for a reason

I been a fan since 1990 they were the last of the big 4 I got into in other words much later then Beatles Stones and Who ... I was familar with their hits but I never knew up till about 1989. I saw the UK Jive tour so it was somewhere in there which was my first show. The album wasn't so great probably my least favorite or Phobia not sure why .... But the concert was excellent. The reason I'm writing is cause in this interview I never knew or saw Ray so mellow like this ... Or was he this way in interviews.

@Pepto Bismol Remember they are "artist types" and it was the 60's and the beginning of pop stars being interviewed about their work. I can't imagine it's a very natural environment to discuss such things in front of a camera in some studio with someone you don't know, just a thought. I would bet Ray is very articulate in a more comfortable place.
