Lovely video. Dunno which album to get next , but the following songs from the same period are as good as the superb collection on the record you have: We Are the Village Green Preservation Society, Days, Death of a Clown (released as a Dave Davies single, but a Kinks record really), David Watts, Where Have All The Good Times Gone?, Animal Farm, We Are All God's Children, Autumn Almanac, and Shangri-La. Great channel, Stripey!

Over here in the states, Reprise records released a double LP set called The Kinks Kronikles which I bought when it came out in 1972. I call it my Kinks bible. It's 28 songs, but it starts mid-'60's Kinks and goes up to right about where your Best of ends. There are SO many gems on it, that I would have never heard. B-sides and deep album tracks. As well as Dead End Street and Waterloo Sunset and Sunny Afternoon and Victoria. But, it's the bulk of the album, the tracks I would not have known about, that I want to alert you to (if you don't know them already). Songs like This Is Where I Belong, Get Back In Line, Did You See His Name?, Wonderboy, Polly, Big Black Smoke, Susanna's Still Alive and She's Got Everything. And others too. If you ever see The Kinks Kronikles over there, do not hesitate to snap it up. As for my recommendation, I want to steer you toward the album Arthur. You will love it from beginning to end. And on one final note, over here, I always, wrongly I'm sure, pronounced Ray and Dave's last name as if the second part had a long EEEZ sound on it. Da-VEEEZ. But I hear you pronounce it DAVIS and I've heard other people say it's pronounced DAVIS, so I'm sure that is how it is pronounced. It just strikes me as peculiar that DAVIES would be pronounce DAVIS, when the name itself DAVIS is prounounced DAVIS, so, why would DAVIES be pronounced DAVIS??? Okay, Stripey , with that, I'm sure I've worn out my welcome but thanks for the video..I enjoyed it very much! :)

It probably is Daveeeeez (my poor pronunciation). I'm really toying with the Kinks mono boxset www.amazon.co.uk/Mono-Collection-VINYL-Kinks/dp/B01LA1YT68/ref=pd_ybh_a_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=NVT7D6C8CVMNDZ95QD9H it looks really nice & a nice addition to the record collection...We'll see! cheers Paul

Probably the most underrated band in the entire history of rock and roll and pop music. Ray Davies is right up there with Lennon and McCartney and Jagger and Richards imo as one of the absolute greatest song writers of all time. Not a bad album in their entire lot. Peace....Steve

Hi Stripey: thanks for the kinks vlog; the delight on your face as you rediscover their beauty and grandeur. Just how I was. Top five albums to get first: -the kinks are the village green preservation society 1968 -something else by the kinks 1967 -muswell hillbillies 1971 -face to face 1966 -to the bone: live double from 1996: it’s a hidden gem

Kinks - The most under-rated band there ever was. These guys are every bit as good or better than bands that are consider bigger, with the exception of the group from Liverpool. I might have to get this one.

I sympathize with your wanting to play cuts off of your lp’s. It is a shame about the copyright thing. I was a teen when the Kinks hit the airwaves. Totally different sound than anyone else at that time. Also, I purchase Mobile Fidelity sleeves for my lps. They are $20.00 for 50 on Amazon. Keep up the videos, I really enjoy!!!

Hey Stripey, cool video!! (I know, just over a year late...!) I'm a massive Kinks fan but I just got this very LP a couple weeks ago and haven't opened it yet (I usually listen on CD, especially for my Kinks with their expanded album deluxe editions!) so I was glad to see this in depth look at it. There's really not a bad song on it, though in case no one else mentioned it yet I wanted to point out that this is the only release ever (physical or digital) that has 'Dead End Street' in true stereo. Hard to believe as it's just a fabulous song and it's a great mix too (not sure if it's from the 60s or if it was more newly done though). 'Mr. Pleasant' is in true stereo on a handful of releases but usually turns up in mono so it's really cool that this one has them both together. Glad to have this one in my Kinks collection now and I'm glad you have it as well! Cheers mate!

Hi mate. Thanks for making this video. A great album. The songs in mono on side 1 sound awesome. And side 2 is also a great collection of songs. Yess..... my number 2 English band. It is my number 2 English band. Ray Davies is maybe the best short story writer in a 3 minutes pop song. Even better than Paul McCartney who also could write some great short storis in a song. Think about Eleanor Rigby. They missed a great breakthrough in America in the sixties due to some conflicts with American musicians unions. But because of that Ray florished even more as a songwriter, writing songs about "The English Society, The English Way. Waterloo Sunset is an awesome song, maybe Ray's best. I own this album as well, and I really play it a lot. The Kinks " Everybody's In Show-Biz" is the last album of them I bought, so I have got all albums from 1964 up to 1972. After that, in my opinion, they made some weaker albums. I would advise you to listen to the Village Green, Arthur, Lola and Muswell Hilbillies albums. For sure, you will like them. And some songs like "Autumn Almanac" and "Where Have All The Good Times Gone". The albums Face To Face and Something Else by The Kinks are also great albums. And a live album from the 90ties, To The Bone, is a good one as well, with some semi-acoustic songs on it. Once again: thanks for this video. I was really looking forward to this one.Take care, mate.

@@StripeyR Hi mate. Enjoy The Village Green album. A great one. Released on the same day as The Beatles' White Album in 1968. Village Green was one of the worst selling albums that year. And now in these times, it is considered a masterpiece. Last week rhere was 70 minutes docu of this album on Dutch tv. It was called Echoes. A very good docu. Mate.... enjoy the album. 15 Great songs on it. By the way....... Did you see my new videos on my little tiny, very small channel? Last friday The Cavern Beatles played in the theatre in my hometown. They performed some 15 minutes Rooftop songs and of course a lot of other Beatles songs.. A great show, a great evening.

The kinks another great British band that helped shape future music i should pick this up at some point probably off Amazon the hmv in Bromley Sergei usually go has really gone downhill since I started going the pink Floyd section literally only has the wall and dark side both of which I already own, the Beatles section casualties the yellow submarine song track rubber soul and pepper same deal, just two examples. I listened to war of the world's earlier today bloody marvoulus if had that " the chances of anything coming from mars " bit stuck in me head all day i have not got it on viynal yet so I listened to it on Spotify via the xbox. (Character break) jes that span out of control over quickly

Use i do hope they improve to.One of the staff seems pretty clueless. Hedidn't seem to know who cream are i asked for disrailly gears and he asked if it was the name of the band and when I said it was by cream he seemed completely bemused by that bear in mind this guy is middle aged and working at hmv but he doesn't know who cream are, they didn't have it of course. One time before that I was looking through the cd s trying to find the doors section i asked this man were it be and he went on a little groan about how the doors are overrated rubish, I almost asked him about the Beatles and Floyd but if he said they were overrated i probably would have kicked him in the balls so I decided against prison.
@StripeyR

Shocking! he didn't know who Cream was & thought The Doors are over rated... No wonder HMV are in trouble, I used to work in HMV back in the early 90's & everyone in our store new shitloads about different genres of music. They need music enthusiasts not morons.

Great review as usual Stripey. The Kinks are one of the most underrated groups of all time. The mono LP box set is fantastic. Some of their later albums are absolute gems, Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Muswell Hillbillies and Everybody’s In Show-biz. If you do one thing in the meantime give ‘Sitting In My Hotel Room’ a listen. I think it’s your kind of tune. A masterpiece.
