They actually ruined their own chances in American in ‘66 and were banned so they are only underrated by self promotion. They were out doing the Beatles but couldn’t control themselves. Lol. Wildly successful later but they are legends in the industry.

My brother in law was a Schenectady, NY cop who earned extra money by doing “security details”. One was to provide security for The Kinks at a downtown theater they were playing. He said the band invited him into the dressing room area and he spent the next two hours drinking beers and hanging with The Kinks. How do you beat that ?? He had a blast.

I am almost done with Dave Davies' excellent autobiography "Kink" right now and it has given me a new appreciation for this band. They can't be under rated when they were one of the early Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees but in my opinion they were more consistant than The Stones or The Who or Pink Floyd. They put out some seriously great music in the late 70s and early 80s

@@luvittodeath7031 Ray Davies, back in the 60s, actually said The Kinks were "pop music" - as in popular music - and called their music "expression." Keep in mind that back then, a lot of rock records WERE "pop" music. Rock was all over top 40 radio, not like now. Later on, Ray referred to the Kinks as riff-based rock.

Fun fact: Dave and Ray have been known to get into fights on stage on occasion. I don't know if there's any KZbin footage to back this up but as someone who's followed them since 1980 I know I've heard a few reports here and there. At the end of Dave's guitar solo Ray appears to walk over to him as if to say, 'That was a pretty long solo, don't you think.' Dave glares back as if to say, 'Go ahead. Start anytime.' Then Ray walks away laughing as if to say, 'Forget it. It's not worth it.' Those two had a real love/hate relationship between them.

1979. Was breaking up with the love of my life, and separating after 7 yrs of living with my girlfriend. But it was amicable. Separate apts in LA, Superman was a powerful radio disco-rock hit then; like the Stones "Miss You' i loved the song. We had tickets to see The Kinks at the Universal Amphitheater when it was still outdoors. So, my kid brother 'Beaver', girlfriend and I saw the Kinks live. They played everything; all their hits. Dave shredded guitar, hit all the high harmony hits, and brother Ray was rock steady...and just the genius he is, Ray Davies. Superman? They blew Superman away! Tremendous live! you should have been there was, I talked to my kid brother tonight on the phone, and have talked to my former girlfrend whom I have known 46 years about that concert. I saw a Kinks show in Portland, Maine during their tour supporting the LP this was on. A real fun show. Have always like Ray Davies with.

Back in the day I only ever saw the Kinks on telly and that was mostly not live performance of course but mimed! Now that I see this, it is clear they had a great stage presence and could really knock it out of the park, live!

The superior background vocals make the Kinks sound epic, I believe its the Bass Player with the higher pitch, reminds me of Michael Anthony of Van Halen.

That’s the distinctive voice of lead guitarist Dave Davies. Terrific harmonies with his brother.

Do you think Ray sang it that way to avoid paying royalties to whomever owns the rights to Superman?

Ray hated disco, but did it to please Clive Davis at Arista, who wanted a "club" song. Dave initially didn't think much of the song, but the humor kept them going long enough to really nail it.
