I'm a post-9/11 Marine veteran. In 2005 we were issued the "updated" version of the Kabar which is the Ontario OKC3s bayonet. It's beefier and more bombproof than the standard Kabar. But...we never liked it anyway. Guys would just get a regular Kabar instead. 🙃 If it ain't broke, don't fix it! The Ontario has a really obtuse factory edge and grind. The steel heat treatment was inconsistent. Some parts of the edge was hard as a diamond and other parts silly soft which means you could never get a keen edge. Sharpen the edge all day and nothing in terms of sharpness. Half the damn blade is taken up by these obnoxiously large and aggressive serrations. I hate knife serrations. But considering this thing wasn't sharp past the tip, you needed them to cut anything! The bayonet guard is large, heavy and in the way. The entire knife is on the heavy side (for a stick tang design) and to make it worse, housed in a brittle plastic sheath that was also unnecessarily large and always in the damn way (had a useless ceramic rod sharpener attached in the back). Wearing this monstrosity on your hip or plate carrier was like having a cylinder shaped brick attached to you. Caught on everything. Bounced around all over the place if not attached to MOLLE. Not fun when having to carry everything else we carried. The blade had a good balance in hand but...meh. I actually like the OKC3s handle though. If there was a Kabar with that exact handle I'd be all over that. But the Kabar design is perfect for what it was intended to be. A lot of serious, sharp blade but still in a light and relatively flat profile package. They could radius the sharp corners between the tang and blade better for more strength but I've yet to snap my Kabar blade and it's been through hell and back. As long as you treat it like a knife and not an axe or sledgehammer then it should last a lifetime. I strip the crap coating and strop the edge to convex it and becomes wicked sharp. Oh, and plain edge, no serrations. I've had all the knives. From cheap to expensive. I've had ESEE knives, Fallkniven, Moras, BRK's, on and on. So much money spent on knives. After all of that, these days I ended back up with my leather handle, leather sheath Kabar as my belt knife. Funny how that works. If I knew the simple Kabar was going to end up being my choice blade I could have saved so much money. 😁 Kabar on the hip, small stainless folder in the pocket, and my axe and saw in the pack. Done. Everything you could possibly ever need to do or worry about in the back mountains in any season can be handled with these. If I'm traveling down South to my family in SC and FL and have my wife and kids in tow where I don't have the room for my regular woods gear and pack, I'll do the "one tool option knife" kit which is my ESEE Junglas and a small folding Silky saw. Attached to the Junglas sheath I have a large pouch that contains a full fire kit and a small stainless folder. But outside of that scenario, it's always my trusty Kabar. Back in my younger days I used to roll my eyes at all the veteran "Boomers" always going on about their old, crusty, trusty Kabars....🙄🙄🙄 Now here I am at almost 40 years old, a USMC veteran....going off about how good my trusty Kabar is....😄🙃 Life, huh?

That's a really nice knife and It's outstanding that it can handle all that wood processing but it's not necessary especially when you have the right tools for the job (hatchet or axe) and aren't afraid to carry them

Yes, having an axe or a hatched is the way to go. I have wood fired stove and I split logs every day ( main source of heat) so this chopper fashion is mostly for show. The review didn't talked about the pain in the hand after chopping frozen log for 10 minutes. Please don't tell me that a solid piece of steel absorbed the shock of the impact .

Have missed your videos. Glad to see you you again!! My preference? A sharp hatchet 1, with a smallish folder, (Swiss army farmer) 2. But if only 1 tool....the hatchet....good for food slicing and better for chopping than a "chopping" knife. Keep tapping that coffee cup for the rest of us!

I have been casting bullets for 40 years and it is a hoot to shoot these “gallery loads” even in my Finnish Mosin rifles, 8mm Mausers, .303 Enfield’s… 18-21 grains of 2400 and let the cheap times roll. I have a 45-110 and 50-140 in 1874 Sharps rifles that I messed with “light loads” with cream of wheat for filler while I still cut and lube my own felt wads… it is like you say “a production” to load them. In Wyoming we would go out in the middle of no where and have “general rock season” and pick random rocks from zero to several hundred yards out for targets. I used to shoot center fire bench rest and I would rather watch paint dry while getting my big toe get hit by a hammer than shoot paper… boring to shoot and watch as you say. @@Woodswalker1965 the guy who makes them is basically a one man band except for the heat treat. All knives have same steel, same micarta handle, same Kydex sheath, same grind. He has some old KZbin vids showing how he does it. Interesting view compared to those whe feel obliged to copy the latest show pony out there. I have some expensive knives (my will weakened) but I’m hard pressed to think up a situation where a good hatchet and a mora wouldn’t work just fine.

I for one believe in the “One tool option” scenario. I think one must train for any situation, and learn to improvise with whatever is at hand. Be it a large chopper, or a pocket knife. My “OTO” is the TOPS Armageddon. I never go out without it. But the Kodiak would suit the job well too.

From what you've demonstrated, it seems your friend has designed an extremely good knife. I'm new to the bushcraft world and have not done as much as I'd like to be as totally comfortable in the woods as you would, but this knife, given the blade design and material chosen, may even top the Tops chopper for what it does: most everything. I really dig the straight wide design, and the relatively easy maintenance of the edge with the right resources. Very impressive. I daresay you could use some moisturizer on those arms LOL!! GET SOME LOTION LOL!! Just kidding, but yeah, it would help a little. Thank you for this review. It's an important option for those who seek something less mainstream, but proven. I'll give Alex's channel a look very very soon. Keep up the good work

The Jungalas 2 feels more like a knife than a chopper but it still chops. I'll still use my ax and saw but the new knife is just fun. Nice video! I am a big knife guy and have owned many. My favorites are the ESEE Junglas and the Gossman Big Boar Tusker. I bought one of these Kodiak Choppers. I ***REALLY*** wanted to like it. But, after trying it several times, it had to move on. I had several issue with it. The bird beak at the end of the handle was super uncomfortable for me. I also found the G10 scales too slick for the weight forward, heavy blade. Micarta would have been much better in my opinion. Also, the screw holes in the scales were hot spots. If I kept it, I would chamfer those! I am bummed out that it wasn't for me. I really thought it would be a winner! Thanks for sharing!

I like that Kodiak a lot!!!! I have a few big blades, the Ontario marine raider bowie is a great, tough all around beater knife that can do it all. Under 100$ cad , made in the USA, 1095 carbon steel I believe. Great video!

Seems like a good knife! I am happy with the big knife I have though. I have a: Schrade SCHF45 Leroy Full Tang Bowie Fixed Blade Knife I use it for almost everything _bushcraft/survival_ . I have a folding saw and a small knife (Mora Companion), but don't use them alot, as my Schrade does so much. I use it to cut branches off tree, cut tree down (in place of axe/hatchet), baton/chop wood, skin the bark off wood, big notches, etc. Sometimes I do use my folding saw to cut small tree or branches or to make specific cut-outs in wood. My Mora is only for small notches, making shavings from wood and occasionally to baton small sticks smaller. I'd say about 85-90% of the work is done with my Schrade knife.

I must confess.. my head went straight to Dark Timber when I saw the title LOL, *but,* I do like the looks of this Kodiak too. As far as a "one blade option" goes, there are some certain criteria that I want in my knife, to meet that definition: * Extended hammer pommel, Survive! Knives does a perfect hammer pommel imo. * Finger choil. If it's gonna be your *ONLY* knife..you need to be able to use it like a small knife as well, and a finger choil gives you that extra control. * 90%/sharp spine. Besides being able to scrape a firesteel, a sharp spine can be used for all sorts of things, like making nice fluff from fatwood or other woods for firecraft. It can almost act as a second edge, sparing your main one. * Grinds: I like a *high* flat/saber grind, like on the Junglas, and/or convex. High flat gives you the best of both worlds, you get the slicing power of a full flat, and the strength/wedge power of a traditional saber. * High carbon steels, with some chromium/stainless, i.e 3V. * Chopper length, plain edge, and straight blades with a nice belly, no funky fantasy designs that are hard to sharpen in the field. * Spear point is my favorite, very utilitarian, but also drop points and clip points. Thumb gimping is nice too, raised or recessed. * Good balance too. This can be achieved through skeletonization of the handle, and a badass Fuller on the blade. Good balance can really make the difference when trying to use your big knife for smaller things, carving or what have you. * Nicely contoured scales, AND removable scales for field stripping/cleaning maintenance. I think that about covers it for me 😂😂 There are a few knives out there that actually have all that, or close to it, but they're not cheap and even harder to find. I do like your chopper though, it has some of the things *I* would want in said "one tool option."

@@wordingreenville yes there are a few. Survive! Knives GSO 5.1 & 7/7 (GEN 2) have pretty much all that. My Gen 1 Dark Timber - Honey Badger has alot of that too, but both of these options are expensive and hard to get, so I think the best 2 companies to recommend are ESEE & Becker. Starting off, they don't have *everything* on that list, but the great thing about both of them is that they are extremely *mod friendly!* 5 minutes ago, 1095 was the tippy top dog, that everyone wanted, before CPM came in and r*ped everything 😂 and 1095 is still a really good field steel, for long time use, because of its super ease of sharpening, which means you can use alot of the things you find around you to get a good utility edge back on it, where the same cannot be said for alot of these super steels, because of their hardness. Always gives & takes with everything. Plus, those knives are available to everybody and most people can afford them. One knife that I really wanted to fit my description was the Field Buddy 6.5, but TOPS..'s (?) spines are too soft, because of their heat treat, so I've skipped those, unfortunately. Anyways, hope that helps!

this is a really cool blade. I have seen a lot of knives like this one, even with the same materials (btw, SK-85 is gonna be the same steel as SK5, a Japanese equivalent to your US made 1080 range carbon steels. That's the same steel that Cold Steel offers on their most budget friendly version of the SRK- priced around $45.00) and they are priced ridiculously. This thing is priced VERY fairly, and from the looks of it, it could run circles around some of those much more pricey options. I think I will grab one if I can. Thanks so much for the video!

I got a kuhkri I use. Bout 6 inches longer on blade. But it's good and thick. Hardened steel and not springy at all. It's an excellent chopper

I am a big knife guy to !! My primary combination is a big knife 7+ inch blade like ontario sp53 or bk9 and leatherman wave multitool !! In my experience, if I have blade less than 7 inch than I have to have axe and saw with me , and that is two more tools to carry !! My technique to chop is not to swing big blade , but put edge against the trunk and hit it with baton few times... that way I dont missed, and forse of a baton much greater than force of a knife by its self !! The only thing I add to my big blades is additional lanyard hole upfront of a handle.. that lanyard is holding weight of a knife if I needed to choke up at the tip of a knife for fine carving or skinning. My multitool I used primarily for scissors, smal saw, file, and pliers... I dont use leatherman blade very much.
