This comeback song to me was a 360 degree shift from their Kwangya concept.., but it had the vibes of 'Savage' and 'I'll make you cry'. When you listen to it for the time, it didn't really hit but then when you listen it more, it eventually grows on you.

It does help immensely to know their lore because all their MVs are part of their storyline so I highly recommend watching the SMCU episodes. That's really all you need to understand their lore because everything is explained in the eps, including the MVs. This MV in particular is related to the aftermath of what happened in the latest episode. If you felt something eerie about it, without going in too deep with the lore, it's because there's supposed to be chaos in the real world (the glitches you noticed) as a result of the battle with the Black Mamba and aespa are ignoring it on purpose, but it's yet to be revealed why.

This is probably my favourite title track of theirs since Next Level, it goes so hard!!! The album doesn't quite beat their 1st mini for me, but it's amazing as well :D

The reason why the setting is in the real world has something to do with the story in their SMCU episodes (you watched only the first episode, if I remember correct, so catching up on that might be helpful). But you can see even the real world has some glitches here and there, so it is not completely “out of their original concept/style” as it may seem. But yeah, it really feels different from their previous releases in the visual aspect of it. I’m not sure if this will be like a new chapter to æspa. It might be just because of the Y2K hype, which is lately used a lot in Kpop after NewJeans debut. To be fair… based on the whole situation of SM for the past half a year, it is really hard to tell how the whole KWANGYA/SMCU metaverse concept will go.

The story behind Spicy is that 1. They've defeated the Black Mamba and are back in the REAL WORLD 2. They've brought naevis, their virtual guide through KWANGYA into the REAL WORLD from her plane of existence, the FLAT, which she wasn't supposed to leave, but, did anyway to help them defeat the Black Mamba and that's revealed in their pre-release Welcome To MY World, 3. Because of naevis' entrance into the REAL WORLD, strange phenomena keeps occurring, which is what the glitches and the random appearances of that helium balloon are about. Yet, in "BREAKING NEWS: Strange Phenomena" teaser, when aespa is questioned by reporters about these things, they deny there's anything weird going on. However, the news keeps obsessing over the strange phenomena and people become preoccupied by it. But, aespa, continuing to insist it's nothing to worry about, proceed to throw a party. However, no one shows up, which is why they're mad in that couch scene. So, they then proceed to have a staged party, after midnight in which all "attendees" are frozen in time in the background. That's also why the streets are empty.

I've never been so hyped about an aespa title track before. To me this song was perfect. It's refreshing nostalgic, and satisfying. Also I like that the video is "bright". I think it perfectly encapsulates the concept of where aespa is on their storyline. It looks and sound bright and normal but there's an underlying layer of gritty and dark-- like something is not quite right. It's most obvious on the first chorus. When the background music stops momentarily then they sing "cause I'm too spicy for your heart" and suddenly that dark electronic sound comes back in and the background distorts. And on the bridge and last chorus where they're wearing bright and colorful, cutesy outfits but their background is in shambles.. The apocalypse.

This video is full of their lore, After they defeat BLACK MAMBA in GIRLS the supposedly came back to the “REAL WORLD” but this is strange, because in the 1 ep of SMCU you can tell they are not like you see in this video, you can see some glitches in the video and also how the time stops and how the streets are empty like if there were some kind of desastre for everyone except for them, it looks like for me that this is not the “REAL WORLD ” and that they are trap in a “Virtual reality” or the fact that NAEVIS is there had cause the PHENOMENON but It’s all speculation until the next episode.

Hi PD I would love for you to react to the aespa lore, however, i will give you like the gist of it. The AI part of the aespa are basically made out of social media feeds posted by one self and they live together in the real world. One day there is a 'sync out' that happens and people are not able to connect to their 'AIs' that is also called MY. The aespa members are told by naevis (who is kind of the AI's leader and who created this sync function initially) that there is someonce called Black mamba who has caused this issue and they have to defeat it by travelling to Kwangya along with their AIs. They reach Kwangya where they come across black mamba who kind of traps them in this hallucination loop. The mamba states that their AI's are better then them as they are made out of their social feeds where usually people post only their good things and not their bad things. Soon people will like their AI counterparts more as they will never age and will always look better. The black mamba herself is made out of all the negative things in the world that people post (hater's post or media criticism) and she tries to individually trap in each of their nightmares: Karina's nightmare of being perfect always, Winter's lack of self worth and people constantly stating that she is not enough, lack of privacy for Giselle and hater's comments for Ningning. Anyways, aespa overcome their fears and with the help of their AI's try to defeat black mamba but they cannot do it. Finally Naevis comes to help them and defeat the Mamba, howver in joining the fight Naevis is banished from the AI world (which is called FLAT) and finally naevis says she will go to the REAL WORLD. The Spicy album is basically talking about her arrival in the real world which causes all those glitches and I believe she arrives at 12am which is when the whole world stops.

You DEFINITELY MUST watch other aespa videos, that is WTMW, Thirsty etc, because there's a lot more to SPICY than you think. You can trace a plot in all those aespa videos. First, they posted shorts with strange objects or phenomenons, they appear non-bothered by those glitches. That's like real world, but something's odd. Second, they drop WTMW, where they meet Naevis. They've just arrived back from Kwangya, so they're kinda enjoying themselves. Then they return to schools, in I'm unhappy it's kinda obvious that they don't fit into society. They then in Salty and Sweet 'eat' something like a microchip, the latter maybe special chip for SYNK or REKALL, and look i'm not a huge fan of their universe, it feels cringy to write those words, but anyway. They destroyed some crucial element. They probably have thought that they need to break their ties with ae, so that they could live simple lives. They then in Thirsty start those lives, find regular jobs, even maybe boyfriends. They then dropped a series of shorts where they act like NPC. Probably a coincidence, but remember that the world in which they currently are has some glitches like matrix, so it all as well maybe connected. In SPICY they fully embrace their new selves. Karina throws out her phone where Naevis texts them concerned messages, and ae-WINTER texts 'I miss you'. The latter is another sign, that girls have broken their connection with ae-world. Aespa became villians themselves. They used their power to become rich (apparently), they crash into parties, freeze people, eat their snacks, wreck havoc, etc. They've probably been the cause of that car accident in the last chorus, and they've been calmly dancing in front of broken cars. I swear we would've seen bodies and blood all over the place if it wasn't a K-pop video. There're multiple occasions where "Spicy girls" are mentiond as villains: in magazine that Giselle reads or on the street posters. And also SPICY is LITERALLY the only MV where Naevis or AE aren't present. And also SPICY features us a lot of glitches too! My conclusion is that girls are trapped in some artificial reality, call it a matrix, where their minds are being manipulated in order to break their ties with Naevis and ae-girls, so that this unknown yet villain could defeat aespa or even recruit them to be henchwomen. I guess, we'll know next comeback.

I agree that the m/v is a bit jarring or odd. Coming from the sci fi concepts, this one really feels like a left turn into a high teen concept. I think it's really strange how empty and cold the sets are, but I felt the same about RV's early videos too. All that being said, the song is incredible and bombastic, perfect for summer.

they're not in kwangya anymore. spicy took place in aespa's real world. their real world is not sci fi/futuristic. Its just a normal world with some advanced technology ( you can see them in the shorts for each member ) they'll possibly go to kwangya in the season 2 of their lore.

THE SINGLES FROM THIS COMEBACK ARE NOT OUT OF THEIR ORIGINAL PLOT!!!! in the last episode of SMCU they killed black mamba and we discovered that she was just an avatar sent by the real villain who's played by BOA. BOA appears to have some kind of wanda vision powers and locks the girls in multiple versions of the real world. every track of this comeback is a different illusion based on real world themes, that's why the world keeps glitching around them. if you pause Spicy at the sofa scene, you'll see the news on the TV talking about strange phenomena happening all around the world, and in the college corridor at the end, Winter points out a flyer in the wall with their photo, saying they appeared from nowhere and seem to have a connection to the phenomena. in Thirsty video, for example, they are not even aespa or singers, they are actors playing a reboot of Friends, (if you check the lettering they are even credited as their real names instead of their stage names). in I'm unhappy they are locked in some kind of orphanage, and when they try to escape they are chased by the fake children. and in 'welcome to my world' they start seeing glimpses of the digital world sent by naevis, and follow them, by the end those glimpses get them to naevis, who asked the weird creatures we saw in the last episode of SMCU to send her to the real world to save the girls. also, in the beginning of the last SMCU episode, these creatures talk really briefly about the crime naevis committed that got her arrested in the Flat in the first place. they mentioned that she was supposed to kill a baby of an evil creature that could end the world, but she saved the baby instead, bringing her to the real world. my theory is that Karina was that baby, and the creature is the character played by BOA, that's why only Karina is possessed and attracted to the dark energy coming out of the portals.

with such powerful sounds, vocals should be able to play along with it or go for a contrasting vibe, soft vocal with heavy instrumentation, or maybe merge the vocals more in the melodies, so theire vocals dont sound so sharp, which i think makes aespa harder to enjoy. maybe it's a mixing thing, dk, but i really live for aespas instrumentals. aespa, new jeans & stayc are making the best instrumentals right now in my opinion
