So glad you've enjoyed her solo works! Pardon the mini essay but wanted to give some possible context: 1) Butterflies are heavily significant to Wheein (her grandmother nicknamed her Butterfly Fairy and it became her first online username as well as one of her many nicknames in the fandom/group lol + she has several butterfly tattoos). Butterflies also symbolize metamorphosis/transformation and the butterfly in the mv that you follow throughout the scenes goes from white to colorful in the latter half. 2) Her first mini EP was 'Magnolia' & the flower has also been a thing for her since that release so the other members gift her white magnolias regularly. In flower symbolism, some of the meanings of white magnolias are supposed to be youth/innocence/joy & purple magnolias are good luck/health/connection to oneself. In one of her trailers, Wheein has a clip of text that says "I was born in a field of white magnolia" and then has another teaser clip with the text, "the root of all things, something that ceaselessly changes [is the Light/Whee]" followed in another with "the time for a new beginning is near. Mood like mysterious purple." And the flowers start off white in the beginning but change to all the colors later, again with a purple focus. 3) the label mentioned in a live that the theme was based on Alice in Wonderland & some of her trailers def show that more but in the mv there are the floating cards/teacups and the door she enters for the freefall scene says "Whee In Wonderland". 4) you can see the mirror writings in some bts stills but It looks like she wrote some key phrases associated with her e.g. 'Caddo'/'Resonance' = she has both tattooed on her and the actual phrase she writes in the mv is hard to fully make out but it looks like something akin to "the blue butterfly knows where we should go(?)" 5) lyrically/song-wise I think there is the theme of developing/blooming both metaphorically for feelings/infatuation for a person and then the literal blooming of the colors and flowers in the mv. 6) not a symbolic thing but just a fun callout - the end butterfly plaque goes from 'Whee' to 'in the mood' and that's her IG handle lol. Essentially, it just feels like she's taken the bits and pieces of herself that she's utilized in the past that represent her and combined it all to possibly signify her new start with her new label. Her last album Redd really felt like the start of her saying "this is me" & it's felt like through each solo release, she has just shown more of herself as an artist and it's been great! Now I also can't wait to see what Moonbyul has in store for us in a few days! Byul & Wheein are also my genre preference for solo work so these back-to-back releases are such a treat 😊

What I understand from the video: she takes the same route every time, until she falls (the scene where she is in free fall) and is covered in butterflies. She tells her lover, don't rush me and she moves in her pace throughout the route she takes. Slowly the flowers build up representing their growing love and her infatuation for that person, cause they are mysterious and she likes that she cares. Finally, the world seems more pink as the lighting changes showing that she is falling more and more in love.
@anncosmoo3 жыл бұрын
I like your thoughts. New perspective for me, as I have seen it less in reference to a person/a lover. With the lyrics and this, I can watch the video again from the perspective of a growing love. Maybe the idea of butterflies in the stomach was too close. I thought more of an introspection of a self-discovery first. A little inner showroom of her journey maybe and her transformation into the Wheein she was searching for and hard to grasp... mysterious, strange... Or also in some points the development of a relationship feeling with her fans in persona of your reference of a lover? 🤔 I'm glad to find something reflective thoughts ^^ thanks

there's actually a lot going on throughout the video, just so much of it is references to so many different things... the alice in wonderland theme was already mentioned by others, and there are several other not so easy to spot references, including the fact that the colors of the flowers change... in a later scene, where the flowers are all purple, she's actually got a small paintbrush in her hand, suggesting she painted the flowers herself... a nod to alice painting all those white roses red in wonderland. even the fact that most of the butterflies are red and blue is a hint to the movie, too, if not the book there are also references to her previous solo mvs scattered around, too. the tvs you mentioned being a reminder of the stack of tvs she and sik-k played pong on in "easy", while the pictures lining so many of the walls reference "water color" (which also had a bunch of frames on the walls, but they were all empty) others have mentioned the personal importance of butterflies and the magnolia flower to her (many, but nowhere near all, of the flowers used were magnolias). and they pointed out that the butterfly board changing from 'whee' to 'in the mood' is a reference to her instagram handle, whee_inthemood, but on her vlive earlier she said she left a hint as to the name of her next album in the mv... so, 'in the mood' is coming, and she already said it's going to be a different side of her than 'whee'... lots of fans are hoping for 'dark and sexy r&b' but we'll see also, another reactor pointed out a bit more about the lighting, how in the room with the table, the lights came on one by one with the finger snapping in that scene and later they pulsed along with the beat yet another reactor talked about the sets and outfits, as well, saying that they basically did the reverse of what's usually done in mvs... usually the rooms/sets tend to be pretty monochromatic and often rather simple while the artist(s) wear bright, more multicolored or patterned outfits that draw the attention to them, while here it tended to be the sets that were more colorful and chaotic (while also still mostly focusing on one color), with a ton of different patterns going on, while wheein herself was the more monochromatic one... yet that still managed to draw the attention to her wheein said the director wanted to do the feel of a one-shot, though it very obviously wasn't one, and that it took them around 30 hours to fully film this video
@charred66833 жыл бұрын
You asked which other artist could pull off something like this vocally. One name came to me instantly when I first heard this song, specially when the bass kicks in with the chorus and I hope Wheein collabs with her one day: Heize.
@berdeng3 жыл бұрын
Oh dear, this whole album is ✨shimmery✨ I LOOOVE the direction she went in, so chill and so easy to listen to. I don't see her having any choreo for any of the tracks and that's somehow refreshing, I kind of feel like it's music made for listening more than it is for performing.

As you said, her vocals really make the song unique and easy to fall in love with. I feel IU's influence through her album in terms of the style of her vocals and also the songs themselves, but of course there's also that unique Wheein quality to her voice and style. Overall it's a lovely solo debut.

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that the footage for water color got messed up but I’m glad you enjoyed it !! I’ll edit this comment when I finish the video !! Edit: so there’s definitely a lot more meaning to the MV, but you kind of have to know some specific details about Wheein herself to get those references. On the mirror I believe are references to her tattoos, there’s lots of butterflies and flowers (magnolias in the beginning I believe and both butterflies and magnolias are significant to her). Otherwise it just looks like a very pretty music video, which is great! But if you know all the little details about her, it makes the MV more enjoyable. Also there were references to Alice in Wonderland, u just kind of have to pause and catch it all! I’m glad you loved Make Me Happy!

Another reactor summarized the concept to: falling "deep into the rabbit hole" of falling in love with the mystery of a person and how it becomes exciting and magical trying to find the different signals of this kind of love. Hence, the Alice in Wonderland-inspired MV.
@Joy-sx3re3 жыл бұрын
the first teaser hinted they were going for an Alice in Wonderland concept and if you watch the MV with that in mind you will be able to find a lot of similarities, for example: Wheein painting the magnolias purple like Alice painted the roses red, the free fall scene, the tea wheein was holding etc. now we know Alice in Wonderland is the tale of Alice's journey to carving out her own distinctive identity as an adult. Make Me Happy and WHEE as a whole capture Wheein's quest for growth and identity as an artist. so in my opinion the mysterious person she is singing about, the one that makes her happy is actually herself, her real self. overall I think the message of the song and MV is regaining sight of who you truly are. the flowers going from small to big to all over the place symbolize wheein getting closer and closer to figuring out who she is. anyway this is just my take. thank you for this review 💜

It was referenced from Alice and Wonderland. Like Wheein jumped into wormhole. It was in her teaser that she got sucked in the bed. Hehe. One interpretation of the video could be to link it to wheein being able to show more of her colors as a solo artist compared to her work under rainbow bridge. the flowers are white in the beginning, as was wheein's associated color in mamamoos concepts. Particularly, they are white magnolias which was also the name of her first solo release, of which she has a hand drawn cover as a tattoo. She goes in circles through the rooms, after the first round the door opens, and the mood grows more colorful, she follows a colored butterfly until she passes through the door (which I think has "whee in wonderland" written on it, see 4:27, as others has stated that this MV was inspired by alice in wonderland), allowing her to let herself fall freely into a new persona, concept and artistic freedom. "Something's about to blossom. don't rush me. My heart is rushing forward" Also, as the butterfly in the end turns from a more muted color to a brighter one, the description goes to whee inthemood , her instagram name which she opened during her later stages in her career. I actually like this way to look at it because the mood of the song is so content, warm and therapeutic, she looks happy in the beginning and end and I like that perspective on her artistry in mamamoo and alone
@charred66833 жыл бұрын
She was always allowed to show her colors in RBW, she decided all her concepts and stuff. There's literally no difference. I know it's satisfying to think that someone leaves an old place to find a better home, but realistically speaking RBW was always very good to her. There's a big difference between leaving for negative reasons (which a lot of people incorrectly assume in this case) and leaving to go experience something new and different to explore somewhere else with new people. If RBW was really that bad the other 3 wouldn't have renewed their contracts so easily. THEL1VE is a very good fit for her but I can guarantee you they felt the pressure of having to produce something on the level of quality her previous solos got from RBW, no doubt.
@TheKeuliMeuli3 жыл бұрын
@@charred6683 I agree! That's what I tried to say in my last sentence. My interpretation is more of taking on a new concept in her solo work and new independence which comes with being alone under a new company. I don't think this takes away from her past work in any way :) thanks for elaborating

@@charred6683 I mean RBW has been pretty shitty for a bit. Definitely gave them freedom, but terrible promotion and not get me started on how RBW is suddenly switching their tune and not admitting that Mamamoo built them from the ground up. I'm not an expert of hairstyles, but I think she parts her hair differently than from her last comeback. I think the last one was more parted in the middle whereas this one was parted a bit more sideways. Oddly, for me, it makes her looks as if she has Ailee's hairstyle. As for these type of song, aside from IU, the names that comes off the top of my head are Gain, Seori, Youra, and perhaps Jiu. I'm quite a sucker for breathy voices and no two breathy voices sounds alike. For me this song is not Butterfly, but it is still a great song. I hope she gets a win in this comeback.
