We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the long delay between this video and the last one, but it has been a difficult time for certain members of the team (nothing major, just personal stresses and obstacles which needed to be overcome) so we were unable to work at full capacity. We hope you like this new episode, but if legends aren’t your thing (and we know many of you prefer real life mysteries) stick around for the next few vids, we think they’ll be more up your street :-)

Trivia: The depiction of a Wendigo as a large, animalistic monster, often with a deer-skull for a head, actually comes from a very similar legendary creature called a Wechuge. Wechuge are created by someone who consumes too much spiritual energy, thus becoming possessed by their own spirit animal, and turning into a ravenous hybrid-animal monster with many of the same properties as a Wendigo.

I’m going to be honest here, eastern Canada is a pretty spooky place. I remember going to my great grandfathers place in Newfoundland, he had died some seven years earlier. I was sleeping on an inflatable mattress with my pop (grandfather) and for the whole night I couldn’t help but feel like there was something watching me. In the middle of the night I heard thuds outside our door as if someone were walking by but we were the only ones in the house. I’ve read other stories about people in areas having similar experiences and I could have honestly imagined it but I like to imagine it was my great-pop checking in on us. It’s a more friendly ghost story but spooky nonetheless

It's called Wendigo Psychosis, brought on by ravenous hunger in the winter. For ex: Swift Runner was a Cree hunter and trapper from the country north of Fort Edmonton, Alberta. He was a big man, over six feet tall, and well liked. He was mild and trustworthy, a considerate husband, and very fond of his children (a little too fond of his children, as events proved). All of these traits endeared him to his people and to the traders of the Hudson’s Bay Company. But this was not enough to allay suspicion when he returned from his winter camp in the spring of 1879 without his wife and family. When he could not give a satisfactory account of their whereabouts, his in-laws became worried. They decided to tell the North West Mounted Police, who had then been in the West for just five years. Inspector Sévère Gagnon was given the task of investigating Swift Runner’s behavior. He and a small party of policemen accordingly trekked out to the trapper’s camp. Swift Runner obligingly showed the Mounted Policemen a small grave near his camp. He explained that one of his boys had died and was buried there. Gagnon and his detachment opened the grave and found the bones undisturbed. That, however, did not explain the human bones scattered around the encampment. Gagnon produced a skull, which Swift Runner willingly told him was that of his wife. Without much prodding, Swift Runner revealed what had happened to the rest of his family. At first, Swift Runner became haunted by dreams. A Wendigo spirit called on him to consume the people around him. The spirit crept through his mind, gradually taking control. Finally he was a Wendigo, and Swift Runner no longer. Then the Wendigo killed and ate Swift Runner’s wife.

I always understood that the story was intended to keep the desperately hungry from eating other people. Some versions claim you must eat human flesh to become a wendigo, while others say it's more like a type posession that drives the host to seek out human meat. Either way, it seems to me that it's a cautionary legend warning of the horrific results if one should turn to cannibalism. The main thing that reinforces this for me is that the wendigo is a winter creature, coming out when food supplies are naturally slim and indigenous people would be struggling to get enough food. But I'm getting into the origins of this legend, not the more modern reports of it like what's in this video.

When I was a child my parents gave me a book about the canadian wilderness. Within it there were several blurbs about canadian folklore including that of the wendigo. The painting that accompanied it was of a man naked save for a white pelt on his head and shoulders. He had bloodshot eyes and a blue heart symbolizing the icy heart contained within the creature. The man was shoving whole beaver pelt covered men into its sharp an grotesquely over opened maw. That to me has always been the wendigo. It's a gaunt person who has forsaken their humanity to eat the flesh of their kin. Didn't help me none to hear my mom recounting our native lore all my life. I was taught early of the evils that lurked out in the wilderness looking for any weakness in our hearts to prey upon us.

I live on a farm in Minnesota surrounded by a grove, One time back when I was about 16, my parents were on vacation, so it was my job to feed and water our barnyard animals, I had just gotten the feed for our horses, and started making my way twards the horse pen, when I noticed, it had become dead silent, not a gust of wind to be heard, not a bird in the sky, even our cows went silent, and then, I suddenly got this dreadful feeling like I was being watched. I tried to finish my chores as quickly as possible, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right, I became so unnerved and flat out scared, that I started talking and even shouting out loud to myself, hoping I could get some reaction from any birds maybe sleeping in our grove, but nothing... dead silence, and that damn omnipresent glare I could feel just wouldn't go away, eventually I finished up chores, and drove to a family friend's house for the night. I never saw or heard anything, and I don't know what it was, if it was a Wendigo or just my nerves, but it put the fear of God in me, and that last story in this video sounded remarkably similar to the feeling I got, and, when I think about it, I'm glad I didn't walk into the grove to investigate.
@LewisZilla
@LewisZilla 5 ай бұрын
I got that EXACT feeling about 2 years ago, I walked dogs at this time, I decided to go down a path I hadn't explored yet with this dog, pickle, a Puggle, I had very mixed feelings about this dog, he was nice but he had a knack for eating ANYTHING, cow poop, cat poop, bird poop, entire dead rodents and birds. It was the hottest summer in the history of the UK at the time, we stuck to entirely shaded areas near water, I didn't suggest walking him in these conditions but his owners insisted, on this new route we approached a bridge underpass and that's when I felt it, in an instant my body went from sweating and overwhelmed by the heat to Ice cold, the air around that area caused instant goosebumps, Pickle ran after something and I thought "please not another putrid meal" but he was just fixated on something. A large, hairy humanoid ear hammered into the wall, pickle wanted NOTHING to do with it after smelling it, and the smell was rancid, stuck in my nose for about 3 days. The entire time I had the piercing sensation of eyes on me, but I saw no one, felt like something was gonna rush out at me the entire time. I returned about 3 months later, this time with a mean, fiery and disobedient Malinois Mastiff mix, she weighed 135lbs, and hated everyone but her owners, would make me fly like a kite at the end of her leash the entire walk, but when we got to the bridge she walked by my side, hackles raises and extremely alert the entire time, resumed to her normal self after we left the place

If you feel like your being watched by some creature, it is always good to speak out loud about Jesus Christ and ask him for protection and praise him. Well, the stories come from somewhere; If there was a bad harvest from crops or the wild rice or oak trees, people would starve. It was a hard life for lake lands tribes. We would keep stores of up to 2 to 3 years of extra food in case there were bad harvests, but things would happen. It was a large reason why many communities would split off into smaller bands when winter came, it was easier to keep people fed and survive the harsh conditions. In the tribe I'm from, it's taboo to listen to or tell stories out of season.

Bigfoot actually hunt these things when they cross into their territory. It's their greatest nemesis. In fact I theorize that the Dogman and Bigfoot are friendly foes whereas, the Wendigo or Rake is their common enemy. They team together to hunt and eradicate them from off their land.

Pure speculation, in reality the bigfoot has never been known to pair up with a werewolf. And he never will. Bigfoots are not evil. Werewolves are. As well as wendigos. Bigfoot will run both of these creatures off their land. We are more likely to team up with a bigfoot than an evil creature.

I’ve asked him about it and even he has said when he’s walking his dog at night he hears sounds I.e. snaps or moany sounds from the forest so it makes me wonder. Hiking through the woods one day, I swore I almost stepped on a little goblin/kid thing with big black eyes.. I ran about 30 feet. I grabbed a big stick, before I decided to walk back. Circling the area, I saw it again. Moving close, I eventually realized it was a great horned owl. At the time I didn't realize, what a 2ft tall owl looked like. I believe I encountered something like this about 10 years ago right outside the Snoqualmie reservation in the Washington Cascades. Off a service road off stampede pass where I used to camp. Was out with a couple of friends, did all the camping shit without incident and go to bed. I wake up around 3am and opened my tent to grab a bottle.of water and about 30 yards away I saw this big grey/white rock next to this bush. Something seemed off though idk what so I just watched for a minute. Then the rock moved, and it lifted up above tbe bush and that's when I realized it was a head, not a rock. It was very dark and at that distance the moon provided very few details but the eyes were very large and very dark. My whole body felt. like a bolt of lightening struck it all hairs on end. I just had an 870 loaded with 00buck but at 30 yards it should've provided a lethal hit, especially since I racked off 7 shells in just a few seconds. Whenever it was hit it bounced like a pop can away from me, looked almost like a big frog bouncing away. No screams or crazy noises, it just took off. There was no blood trail left over or any indication that I did significant damage to the creature. I know I didn't miss, it just didn't stop the thing. It still bothers me thinking about it, not a fear thing, but a confusion thing. Idk man.

These experiments consist of 200 humans. And if they can infect people. Well then they must exist today. Most likely why people always have had these stories and encounters dating back 1000's of years.

I like how you guys aren’t super sensationalist, that you provide analysis and don’t claim every piece of evidence is definitely real, but you also provide a little wiggle room for the chance that things like Wendigos actually exist. It’s not very fun to watch a video with someone who’s like “well OBVIOUSLY wendigos aren’t real IDIOT.” It kind of ruins the mood lol. You guys do a great job of giving an opinion while also remaining neutral enough to keep things spooky & suggest that there are things in this world that we just don’t know or understand.

Amazing video! I live in northern Canada and I am also Metis, one of the three Aboriginal groups in Canada. The winters here are long and cold and dark; the story of the Wendigo/Witiko/Windigo was a lesson to those as to not to eat your people if you were starving in the winter. A similar creature in the Metis folklore is the Rugaru, or werewolf, but the Rugaru and Wendigo are considered two completely different creatures by the Metis. I highly recommend reading about Jack Fiddler, and Oji-Cree/Swampy Cree who "defeated" fourteen Wendigos. As I said before, the north is dark and cold and we are surrounded by the boreal forest; who knows what stalks us.

I've seen them three times, outside my windows. I grew up in a ranch style, single family home on a quarter acre lot, in a quiet, rural town in Massachusetts. My family is of Native American descent. The bedroom my sister and I shared was a tiny 10-by-12-foot room, with two 54-by-29-inch windows. The glass panes were six over one, and from outside the sill was about 3 1/2 feet off the ground. We slept in a bunk bed. She had the top bunk, and I had the bottom one. It was summer, hazy, hot and humid. At the time, we did not have air conditioning, so the windows were kept open to let in the breeze. It did not help much in cooling down the house. My sister was sitting at the head of my bed. She was reading a story to me. I suddenly felt icy cold. I had the feeling that I had to look out the window, but I did not want to. It felt as if, I had to. I could not believe what I was seeing. There were glowing red eyes, staring in at me. I could not look away from what I saw, believe me, I tried. The eyes were about 2 feet up from the windowsill. They were staring at me. I get chills just remembering this. It took, what seemed forever to tear my gaze away. When I did, I rushed to the head of the bed and told my sister to look out the window. When she finally did, the eyes were gone. Another time, I was home alone. My parents were out for the evening, and my sister was staying with a friend. I was sitting in the living room watching TV when out the corner of my eye I saw something move. I should tell you from where I was sitting I could see into the bathroom and straight out the bathroom window to the backyard. I turned to look, and I saw what looked like a skull, up close to the window, moving toward the back door area. Now for it to be that close to the window, it would have to have been walking in the flowerbed. It would also, have had to walk across the cellar door. I was terrified. I closed my eyes and stayed in that chair all night. I did not move a single muscle. Another time, I had finally gotten a room of my own. It is a mirror image of our shared bedroom. After having moved into it, I felt a presence. Outside my window there was a 12-inch wide flower garden, then the driveway, which is about 5 feet wide. Next to that was the woodpile. Sitting on top of the woodpile was a large, white-colored creature. It had long limbs, broad hands with thin spidery fingers and glowing red eyes. It was staring in at me. I tore my gaze away from it, after what seemed forever to me, and hid under the covers until morning. My mother found me like that, under the sheet and coverlet. She wondered how I could breathe under there.

I spent time around Cree in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. In order to help explain the discrepancies found in its description, first off, the Wendigo is a NORTHERN NATIVE spirit, with BASTARDIZED, or at least, HEAVILY ALTERED South Western version, which seems to have come out of West Virginia. Second, the Wendigo spirit possesses those who commit acts of cannibalism, and turns them into creatures that are rotting and decayed, they have a deer skull and antlers, and their physical body ranges in description from a rotting bear carcass with an open human rib cage, to a rotting furred creature with long arms and claws. The story I had put here originally was meant to entertain, however, it received much “ uh actually that’s all incorrect” from people who didn’t know what they were talking about so now it’s gone. Oh, and again, I actually AM Native, and from Canada, my ancestors are all from the North, yes, I actually know what I’m talking about, especially in this specific subject, my ancestors literally told the first stories of this particular Spirit.

@@ryan_stovall_ No, you are thinking of the westernized wendigo, or, the West Virginian Wendigo to be specific. The Wendigo is a Native Spirit which would possess those who committed acts of cannibalism, turning them into a grotesque rotting creature, with a deer skull, I am of Native birth, from the Northern region, and our ancestors quite literally told the first original stories, and it is still possible to be heard today from elders. Some variations of the spirit in the stories include humans driven to insanity, and turned cannibals by the Wendigo spirit in order to possess them. The Skinwalker is a Southern Tale, and is a distant cousin in ideology to the Wendigo, Skinwalkers, in modern tales, are sometimes called Wendigo, and over years of over saturation, they are often mistaken for each other, and many illustrations of Wendigo have been used to show skinwalkers.

I've heard many reports almost exactly like these.. Some described with antlers and even some with bat-like wings (though I doubt this). People describe their eyes varied in color from black to off-white, orange, and yellow, etc., but all one solid color, in large deep-set holes in their faces. The screech is trademark, and many describe them as being able to mimic the voices of loved ones. As a biologist, I want to find out what they actually are biologically. However, they are clearly not primate-like, yet they are bizarrely humanoid in shape. They seem more animalistic than technological, so that would rule out aliens (at least in theory, to me), but their ability to almost sense and project the voices of people's loved ones does seem to suggest some sort of supernatural or paranormal aspect to them, which baffles me.. Usually they are thought to observe groups of people, and mimic their voices as they hear them, but some reports appear to indicate that there is no logical way from them to be able to 'guess' the voices or vernacular of people's loved ones. I'm convinced that people are indeed seeing something, but I have no explanation as to what "it" or "they" are..

Internet thing, I think... I prefer the more humanoid renditions like the ones Rick Yancey envisioned in 'Curse of the Wendigo' (2nd book in The Monstrumologist series, strongly suggest!). While rereading the series I looked up a few pictures to see what others thought about it, but I saw too many with antlers that just didn't come off right, ya know? I think the fear factor comes from the fact that they're extremely deformed, and demented humans. The antlers make it seem too supernatural which I think removes an element of realism, and therefore believability, and therefore... fear. That's just me; I'm a rambler, sorry for the essay.

The second story reminds me of a story my mother told me when I was younger. I don't remember all the details as it was many years ago. When she was a kid, she was living in a remote house with her siblings and parents. I think if I recall correctly, it was on a farm out in the middle of nowhere. She told me how one night there was some "creature" that was "running all over the roof and outside walls making a hellova racket". The event lasted maybe an hour and was witnessed by some of my aunts and uncles as well as my grandparents. They never did see what it was, but they said it moved way faster than anything they have ever heard. It also tore up the window screens (metal screens back then). It was trying to get into the house and my grandparents made sure everything was locked and all the kids stayed inside. Another story I remember... one night my grandparents, her, and a couple of her siblings were going down a country road when she saw a light in the sky. She said it was far off to begin with but quickly approached the car and hovered directly above the car out of sight. My grandparents floored it but the light kept up with them. Then, she said it just flew off. My grandparents told them to never speak a word about that to anyone. Based on her age in the stories, these events probably happened in the early to mid-1960s. I have had my own share of "strange events" in my life, except I got real good looks at some of the things I encountered and nobody would believe me anyway.

Also, Native American tribe members may be hungry and sometimes starving during harsh winters, cannibalism can occur if left unchecked, and there were greedy, miserly tribe members who would hoard the plants they gathered or the meat they got from hunting. So the legend of the Wendigo is basically a cautionary tale against cannibalism and greed.

I had a possible encounter with a Wendigo a few days ago on a week long camping trip in Northern Pennsylvania. I was waking up one morning when I heard a strange noise coming from behind our campsite. The moment the sun peaked out from behind the trees I heard this loud scream, so loud it echoed off the hills around me. It sounded demonic. If I could describe it it sounded like a high pitched wail combined with metal screeching, and it carried on for at least two or three seconds. It could've been another person or maybe just a waking dream, but to me it sounded very real, almost too real. I kept my head on a swivel for the rest of the week, especially at night and in the early morning.

I have Cherokee blood, and family and friends we all agree: you don't talk about this sort of thing if you can help it. It can capture the creature's attention and draw them to you. Be it something like this, or the 'little people,' you just don't. A dude I know told me a friend of his said not to go into this certain wooded area around the local lake because there were skinwalkers and wendigo there. He said he had went anyway alone, and didn't see any unusual creatures, but he did find an abandoned well, and what seemed to be where a house used to be, now only having the basement left. There had been some vandalizing, of course, but he couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. He took a photo of the inside of the 'basement' and there was an unusual pair of glowing eyes looking back from the dark. That's when he decided to book it out and had to travel at least two miles back to the main trail. I saw the picture, not sure what to think of it, but the whole area has an off vibe anyway. I have heard odd sounds and my name called, known people to have practiced things they shouldn't have down at a park, seen the odd black cats etc. I was told that people close to the land will often experience glimpses of things, who knows.

Call me nitpicky but my main issue with most of these "encounter videos" is that they are like horror movies - in the sense that people in them never react the way you'd imagine a real rational person would. You do not hear such guttering sounds and go investigate in the freaking dark with NO weapons on you. Even if ended up being a regular animal like a boar or bear or cougar.....come on, NOBODY does that in real life.

LunarWolf94 then there wouldn’t be a story. That’s why there are encounter stories at all. The people who decide to not investigate don’t encounter anything. Dumb or not, the people who decide to investigate end up seeing something. It’s like saying that your problem with war stories is that they come from people who enlisted in the military

The release of Until Dawn has made them quite a bit more popular in recent years, at least on the internet creepy-pasta scene. Otherwise, great video, the Wendigo is a fascinating creature to me, just as fascinating as the Skinwalker. Keep these coming!

When Inuits found and boarded one of the Franklin expedition abandoned ships, that drifted near shore, there was a hole in the hull and they found a dead man with very long teeth. The teeth are a symptoms of scurvy, but it must have frightened them.

@@graceonthewater Yeah because it is fucking disgusting to see people have self hatred. You should get triggered by it, it's a very human response.

15:08 I have experienced this; everything going quiet. At this point you have gone through some kind of transition. Time changes. ... Once, while animal tracking in the forest, I stepped into a different time. ... You really know that something weird has happened when the sound comes back on again. That is more noticable. ...
