I’m Cameroonian and this event will never leave us. We’ve had some horrible disasters in my country. I remember being in boarding school and we started seeing fiery rocks flying in the sky and people screaming so loud. Behold it was a volcanic eruption. (Mt. Cameroon was shooting and spilling lava on homes) Till this day the rocks are still laid there and attracts tourists from all over the world.

Quick note there: CO2 isn't toxic under the right concentration in our breathing air. It can "burn" you in form of frostbite if, for instance, you use the CO2 extinguisher too close to you or if you touch its exhaustor after using it. CO2 is used in fancy drinks. Solid CO2 gives it the smoking finish to the drink, but if the drink is concocted by someone not trained, it may poison the customer or even burn his throat and stomach if accidentally swallowed (see Chubbyemu for an example on this). CO2 is also the by product of our breathing process. So, technically speaking, we aren't poisoned by CO2. We're deprived of enough O2 on the chemical process we call breathing. Finally, I believe those wounds were caused by a more deadly form of CO2 that is acidic, called carboxilic acid. Since it came from the lake, it's more likely the CO2 in liquid would reconfigure as acid (specially on presence of other chemical compounds from the vulcanic activity) and it would be pulverized as that mist. If so, that would be one of the worst ways to die, breathing acid and have it cook your lungs from the inside. That would also explain the skin wounds and how uneven the damage was, since the concentration varies due to the large affected area.

Agreed, but there are unexplainable phenomena out there that no one has yet to explain. I guess some things are simply beyond our realm of understanding or we're just not as advanced as we think we are. Haha I'm thankful for those scientists who studied these underwater/underground "ticking time bombs" to better protect these good people in the future. It's unfortunate some are still unaware they're living by an even bigger one that could go off at any moment. I was around 4 when one of these eruptions occured. Obviously I had no idea...Just goes to show you never stop learning! :) I wish more unknown yet super fascinating stuff like the incidents in Cameroon were taught in middle school or high schools possibly getting more people interested in science.... 👩‍🔬⚗️🔬🧬💉🧪🧫 🔭🌌 🥼😷🩺🦠💊🌋🌡️🌍🛸🌀🏜️🔥🌪️☢️🌁

The volcano may have been venting underneath the lakes. It's often that, when there are lakes near volcanoes that the volcano may have vents beneath the lakes which assists in keeping the volcanoes above ground dormant. It comes to the surface in the form of air bubbles. Very tragic and just shows how little we actually know about our own planet ☹️
@DistractedGlobeGuy
@DistractedGlobeGuy 2 жыл бұрын
There needn't even be "vents" _per se,_ as the acidic compounds in the underground floes can poison the silt of the lakebed through sheer proximity. The only real need for direct volcanic activity is in churning up the silt enough to get the deadly solution airborne.

Something described as a thick mist sweeping through a village, killing hundreds of people (many in their sleep), killing the livestock, leaving the survivors with terrible rashes and wounds, and turning the water red. Well, I think we might know now what the plagues of Egypt actually were. It could also explain the frogs and locusts. Frogs fleeing the water because they can tell something is wrong with it and locusts fleeing in giant swarms because they notice something strange in the air.

In 2006 James Cameron and investigative film maker Simcha Jacobovici released a documentary called The Exodus Decoded. They stated that they have proof the Exodus really happened and they can explain the 10 Plagues of Egypt. They cited the Lake Nyos incident to explain the Nile turning red, driving the frogs from the river the dead fish spreading flies. The boils on people's skin and the mist. The key point they made was that the Exodus occurred 150 years earlier than what most scholars claimed. During that time the volcano island of Santorini exploded and raised all kinds of havoc in the Eastern Med. The documentary is on KZbin.

Those poor ppl. They lost generations to these disasters. I'm glad they found ways to make the two smaller lakes safer. I hope they can figure out a way to de-gas Lake Kivu and prevent this from happening to those living in and around Kivu. It's horrific. It literally robs ppl of their ability to flee when it happens. And it wipes out all animal life. It's so sad.
@uranium54321
@uranium54321 Жыл бұрын
The good news is that Kivu isn’t that close to erupting right now. Although the video makes it seem that way with the “average of one large eruption every 1000 years / last major eruption 3500-5000 years ago” stat, there are a few issues with that. First, there probably could’ve been eruptions since then that they just weren’t able to CONFIRM beyond a shadow of a doubt (though this is speculation on my part). More importantly, actual CO2 levels in the lake are well under half the capacity at which it would become saturated, making it MUCH harder to trigger an eruption. Nearby volcanoes erupted in both 2002 and 2021 without setting it off. Moral of the story? Be worried about it, but don’t be too worried about it. It’s being closely monitored now that the danger it poses is understood, and it’s probably not going to erupt within the next couple years.

The potential disaster at Lake Kivu could've happened in 2008, as there was an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the moment magnitude scale occurred near Lake Kivu. Fortunately though, it didn't trigger a limnic eruption (the earthquake occurred on the land nearby), but it's scary to think that any natural event near the lake could set the whole thing off. Hopefully there is some sort of solution that could prevent the disaster from happening, but there doesn't seem to be much we can do.

Even though Nick takes awhile to upload it’s always worth the wait since you can tell he genuinely does his research and really cares about the topic

I just got done watching a short documentary about the London Smog of 1952. The intro to this gave me chills.

There was a similar case in Australia in 1963 when a couple were found dead next to a river. No one could work out how they died. 40 yrs later it is belived it was caused by toxic mist from pollutants in the water.

so you say his voice is more important than what he talks about and the facts he provides? in many of his videos i cant find any serious source except his own video about it. so its more like a person telling you scarry fairytales instead a real case. totally fraud imo.
