Quick note there: CO2 isn't toxic under the right concentration in our breathing air. It can "burn" you in form of frostbite if, for instance, you use the CO2 extinguisher too close to you or if you touch its exhaustor after using it. CO2 is used in fancy drinks. Solid CO2 gives it the smoking finish to the drink, but if the drink is concocted by someone not trained, it may poison the customer or even burn his throat and stomach if accidentally swallowed (see Chubbyemu for an example on this). CO2 is also the by product of our breathing process. So, technically speaking, we aren't poisoned by CO2. We're deprived of enough O2 on the chemical process we call breathing. Finally, I believe those wounds were caused by a more deadly form of CO2 that is acidic, called carboxilic acid. Since it came from the lake, it's more likely the CO2 in liquid would reconfigure as acid (specially on presence of other chemical compounds from the vulcanic activity) and it would be pulverized as that mist. If so, that would be one of the worst ways to die, breathing acid and have it cook your lungs from the inside. That would also explain the skin wounds and how uneven the damage was, since the concentration varies due to the large affected area.

The volcano may have been venting underneath the lakes. There needn't even be "vents" _per se,_ as the acidic compounds in the underground floes can poison the silt of the lakebed through sheer proximity. The only real need for direct volcanic activity is in churning up the silt enough to get the deadly solution airborne.

Something described as a thick mist sweeping through a village, killing hundreds of people (many in their sleep), killing the livestock, leaving the survivors with terrible rashes and wounds, and turning the water red. In 2006 James Cameron and investigative film maker Simcha Jacobovici released a documentary called The Exodus Decoded. They stated that they have proof the Exodus really happened and they can explain the 10 Plagues of Egypt. They cited the Lake Nyos incident to explain the Nile turning red, driving the frogs from the river the dead fish spreading flies. The boils on people's skin and the mist. The key point they made was that the Exodus occurred 150 years earlier than what most scholars claimed. During that time the volcano island of Santorini exploded and raised all kinds of havoc in the Eastern Med. The documentary is on KZbin.

And it wipes out all animal life. It's so sad.
@uranium54321 Жыл бұрын
The good news is that Kivu isn’t that close to erupting right now. Although the video makes it seem that way with the “average of one large eruption every 1000 years / last major eruption 3500-5000 years ago” stat, there are a few issues with that. First, there probably could’ve been eruptions since then that they just weren’t able to CONFIRM beyond a shadow of a doubt (though this is speculation on my part). More importantly, actual CO2 levels in the lake are well under half the capacity at which it would become saturated, making it MUCH harder to trigger an eruption. Nearby volcanoes erupted in both 2002 and 2021 without setting it off. Moral of the story? Be worried about it, but don’t be too worried about it. It’s being closely monitored now that the danger it poses is understood, and it’s probably not going to erupt within the next couple years.

Still, I’m grateful others with my condition are being thought of. Before mine was under control, flashing, strobes, would instantly trigger a seizure. It seems more people are becoming aware and warning us. I’m so grateful for you, and other thoughtful people who give us a heads up. Also… Always a great day when Nick uploads a video!!! The world we live on is a scary place, not just because of the dangerous wildlife or the violence committed by people, but the earth itself. The fact that the people and animals were killed over night by lethal gasses erupting from the lake, is disturbing. The potential disaster at Lake Kivu could've happened in 2008, as there was an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the moment magnitude scale occurred near Lake Kivu. Fortunately though, it didn't trigger a limnic eruption (the earthquake occurred on the land nearby), but it's scary to think that any natural event near the lake could set the whole thing off. Hopefully there is some sort of solution that could prevent the disaster from happening, but there doesn't seem to be much we can do.
