*finally finished the ending compilation here:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYfRg2Vmp92goNU *to show the various actresses perform the last verses and gasp - do check it out!* the ending hasn't been confirmed, and left open to interpretation - each eliza is different. there is no right and wrong, so please keep the discussion civil! i've had to delete a few comments here already

It take more for me because I need more content to think about, like in this I focus on the music, not on the fact that her son had died not too long before her husband died, and she still saw the light in him even after the Reynolds Pamphlet and the Reynolds Pamphlet was the reason Phillip died so Alexander indirectly killed his son yet Eliza still made him and so many others have a big legacy, and she’s helping orphans, and she still sees Alexander in them every single time, even decades after his death. This mixed with the music makes me cry, not to mention crying not too long before at Phillip’s death Sorry I wrote so much, I’m abrasive, you guys are incredible in comments, succinct, persuasive

@MrHendu2144 жыл бұрын
@RedHeadVixen 101 that could work for this particular performance, though LMM and Philippa Soo both have said it's something different for everyone, thre common thread is that the moment "transcends time". Regardless, I do like the idea of Lin getting to show Eliza that their story wasd indeed told.
@thateditinggurl6794 жыл бұрын
theirs a theory that the reason "eliza" at the end of the musical has that gasp at the end is beacuse, she always wondered if she had done enough and that she'd beacome famous or well known for her kindness etc. and then when she looks at the audience she realizes that everything she had done was worth it and that she had reached her goal of beacoming well known. (edit) wow this blew up, and i'm not saying that this is the only reason Philipa gasps Lin said that theirs different meanings for different eliza's so this us just my theory
@daniellelu9804 жыл бұрын
Its actually when hamilton and eliza meet in heaven and hold hands, eliza realizes the only way she saw her husband is that she died, and the gasp is her rising up into the afterlife to join her loved ones.

@@daniellelu980 it is all interpreted differently, lin has never given an exact interpretation, as for every eliza it's different. But I've heard that he has said it is her breaking the 4th wall, so that kind of drives the theory in the obc that Lin is not Alexander anymore and it is actually Lin that takes her hand and shows Eliza the audience that have now seen their stories and will carry on her legacy as well as Hamiltons.

I’ve seen a lot of people interpret the ending as lin telling eliza that he’s telling their story. But I actually think that in that scene lin is supposed to be/symbolize 3 things which are eliza’s death ( when he passes eliza), alexander meeting eliza at the afterlife (when lin says hi), and playing himself/the actor telling their story (when he guides eliza). Then again I haven’t been outside for months so I could just be delusional.

Another way I like to look at it is this: Since she is essentially a 'Founding Mother' of the U.S., she looks out to see all of us as the country today and gasps with great joy that it has all come together and still persists to this day. Much like a proud mother seeing that all her children have grown up and have carried on all of their legacies who started the country. Of course this is just another interpretation and there is no right or wrong answer, just whatever fits what impacts you the most in the moment, something only art can do with it's many meanings through ambiguity.

This last minute says so much. Elizabeth Schuyler was the definition of beauty and good. She wanted and didn't get the recognition she deserves. "When my time is up have I done enough? Will they tell my story?" Lin saw this and gave her what she wanted. Not only did he tell her husbands story, which she also wanted. Her story was told, too. I can relate to Eliza a lot about wanted your story to be told and feeling like your not doing enough, so this song really speaks to me. Lin is such a talented writer and this song is really moving.

This is my theory on why she gasps: Earlier in the song, she says "And when my time is up, have I done enough? While they tell my story?". After that she says "I can't wait to see you again." Then she sees Hamilton and takes his hand. This symbolizes her arriving in Heaven and "seeing Hamilton again". Then he takes her to the front of the stage as if he's going to show her something. In this moment he breaks the 4th wall and shows her that in the future, her work has paid off, and their story is actually told; she sees the audience and realizes this. Then she gasps because she's overwhelmed with emotion.

I saw this theory in TikTok, so basically, when Eliza finishes the song, Lin, not Alexander, takes her my the hand and brings her back to the gifting of the stage. She comes to realize that Lin told their story, and bursts into tears. :)

I’ve always wondered why she gasped out of nowhere at the end, until I re-listened to the whole musical again and one of Eliza’s earliest lines is “I have never been the type to try and grab the spotlight.” It’s probably super obvious to everyone else but it took me a while

Wait i just realised why the line "i helped raise hundreds of children, I get to see them growing up" was so emphasised. Cuz she couldnt really see phillip grow up, she never saw him get married, have kids, fulfil his dreams...

The emotion and unspoken communication in this scene is simply AMAZING! I like how he guides her to the "light" of the afterlife and she now sees his AND her story. Incredible stage play! 💯🔥

i think it's a culmination of all of these theories. lin shows her that the world knows alexander's story, which leads her to gasp and break the fourth wall and see for herself that how many people truly knew what happened, and right after notice the sense of calm on her face. Maybe it's because she feels like her job of spreading his story is done, and she can finally go to heaven where her husband, son, and sisters and friends wait for her. That's why I think she looks so calm after her gasp. Or maybe I'm just looking into this too deeply lol.

I hope Eliza knows she did enough and she was more than enough. She fought for her husband’s legacy and many people including Washington himself. She kept the torch on for decades long enough for their story to be told. I hope she knows how much we admire her life, her strength, her love and courage. We are telling your story

As a grieving mother, I like to choose to interpret her gasp at the end as being reunited with Philip. Alexander took her hand and led her to see her son again after the blessing and curse of living such a long time after his death. After caring for other children as her legacy. That's what I like to imagine at least.

The sweetest lines in Hamilton “At least my dear Eliza’s his wife.” “My life is going to be fine, because Eliza’s in it.” “Hey, best of wives and best of women.” “In their eyes I see you, Alexander, I see you everytime.” “God, I can’t wait to see her again.” (From Ten Things, One Thing, a deleted song.) “They’ll tell the story of tonight.” “I was too young and blind to see the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me.” “*she takes his hand*, It’s quiet uptown.” “And long as I’m alive, Eliza, swear to God you’ll never feel so helpless.” “I love my sister more than anything in this life.”

I read somewhere that Philippa lost a family member before the show and in some of the scenes she was actually crying. And a couple of times you can see Lin mouthing ‘you ok?’ And stuff which I think is really sweet 🥺

I think at the end when Eliza gasps she is seeing how their stories are told and how they are remembered. In an interview Lin said that each actress though it was a different thing that Eliza was seeing.

0:45 as Alexander passes by Eliza he is no longer Alexander, he is now Lin Manuel Miranda. Lin looks at Eliza as they meet for the first time. 1:04 Lin takes Elizas hand and leads her to the audience where she sees that her and Alexander’s story has been passed on and told.

I’ve alwAys looked at it as it’s goes from Lin playing Hamilton to Lin being Lin. Then he guides her downstage to show her the audience and she sees that they all knew her and Hamilton’s story. One reason I think this above other theories is the way she looks at Lin. She looks at him as if he’s a stranger she just met not her husband who’s she’s been reunited with. Not in a bad way, but like not in a “I KNOW YOU” way. Idk I love it no matter what.

The reason she gasped like that at the end was becuase she saw how much she did. Before Hamilton came on, she thought she didn’t do enough. But he silently showed her that she did enough.

I see the ending as Eliza passing away (which is why she ends with “will they tell MY story?”) and being reunited with Alexander because you can see him whisper “hi” to her (also links back to him saying “I’ll see you on the other side” in The World was Wide Enough). When he leads her to the front of the stage and she gasps it’s him showing Eliza that she DID do enough and his story WAS told in the end (the crowd watching a musical called Hamilton is evidence of this), but more importantly they also told her story too. Edit: the little crossover movement they do where Alexander walks behind could represent her passing over into the afterlife, as Eliza can’t see him at first but he can see her, and it’s only once she has crossed does she see and smile at him. Plus when they hold hands she is clearly hesitant to, as if she’s unsure she even can and has not held his hands in a long time since she died so much later, now she finally can must mean she’s died too.
