This man died an agonizing, long, horrible death. No matter how you feel about how he got in to his circumstances, have some measure of empathy for him. I think it makes some people feel better to call him names and say what a fool he was because they think something like this would never happen to them. I personally wouldn't want to be "tempting the fates" by saying that, even if I were thinking it. All of us have made decisions that could have resulted in disaster, even if we were unaware of it.
@Madnessonman
@Madnessonman 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but most of us have never gone to these extremes on adventures or we play it smarter. So I find it impossible to have any empathy for this idiot. Like I went on a backpack camping hike. I didn't last as long as I wanted to because I was running out of water even though I had plenty of containers but there just weren't enough drinkable sources between my stops. (I dunno how others do/did it.) So I called for help and left sooner than I wanted to but I wasn't so dumb to keep on going without water. I'll go back and finish the rest some other time.

I dont agree, you dont live in vacuum, he became a burden to his family and the society that had to support a rescue mission only due to his own recklessness and stupidity. The idea we should feel bad for every moron that gets himself killed is just bizzare, how many people do 300km in a sports car in a rainy night only do get spread over 1km long distance when they crash. Do you really feel bad for them, especially when they kill other people? I can honestly say i hate all those reckless adrenaline junkies.

Nutty Putty was a fun and popular cave. I have a lot of fun memories in that cave. It was a disappointment when the cave was sealed with concrete after years of threatening to do so (someone would get stuck in the narrow passages every year); but to be sealed as a tomb, leaving behind a wife and newborn baby, was tragic. What a sad story.

Just saw. The movie is well done. Praise to the producers, actors, directors and the plethora of people involved. Thank you to the families for sharing this moving story and the life of such a wonderful man. Thank you to Emily. The movie feels gritty and real. Nothing feels sugar-coated. The stories of John's relationships with family members drive the movie forward making it both interesting and thought provoking. Even knowing the outcome, I was genuinely intrigued all the way through. I went to the movie out of respect for the dead and the family, and came away with more respect for John as a person and for the beauty and gift of life in general. I came away loving my little ones and my husband a little bit more. Thank you again for this beautiful production.

They left the body in the sealed cave. Therefore it created incredible archaeological evidence. It will remain preserved in such conditions for eternity. There is a you tube documentary on this poor soul and it suggests he kept going because he believed there was a wider opening to turn around, and he misjudged what he was seeing. Some people make dumb decisions under stress. He would have been fine, sadly, had he stopped about 10 feet before where he ended. He exhaled to make room to wiggle and peer over the final lip and slid down a bit, and when he inhaled he became even more stuck. As he wiggled to try to work backwards it only made things worse and he slid further down. He probably honestly thought he could make it. Emergency crews were there quickly. We can arm chair quarterback this all day but an electric wench with a steel cable might could have done it, especially if they could have gotten it attached properly. They needed to get him anesthesia and break his knees backwards as well. When they did try to pull him his feet hit the top of the cave near the lip he slid over and his knees couldn't naturally bend backwards. Go check out the documentary video about 20 mins long.

I was just going to ask that from what I recently read, getting him out was near impossible because when they tried, his feet hit the top here he was stuck. Poor guy probably regretted that last 5-1 feet. I am gonna try to watch this digitally if I can, I am intrigued by the story in general.

This story has kept my attention for days now. I even had a nightmare about it last night. I just can't even imagine the psychological torture of his last day of life. I don't completely understand why the rescuers and family members agreed to leave him down there. The last thing he wanted in this world was to get out of that damn cave. Although, I get it's easy for me to say I'd recover his body, and I have no understanding of how the family came to that terrible decision they had to make. John and his extended family seem like incredible people.

He kept sliding further and further down, it was deemed too big a risk to the rescuers to pull the corpse out. The way the extremely narrow chute twisted like a corkscrew made it far too risky :(

We never ever descent with the head in a cave. You always descent uprights so anytime you have control of your body movement no matter the situation. Also, if the passage is not horizontal, then you have always attached a caving rope to your gear. You should definitely not visit caves with such narrow passages if you are not certified speleologist. I am impressed that before mr Jones and his friends visit, in the previous years, there were some people were got stuck in there. So why someone didn't put a hatch with lock in the entrance, so only speleologist's can visit?

I was one of the boy scouts that went into the cave when I was just around 14 years old. I remember going into a passage headfirst and it opened up into a larger cavern. the passage was only big enough for a skinny kid to fit through. our scout master dean Shower hammer was on the other side and said he could not fit in to see what we were doing. there was 4 of us scouts in this cavern shining a flashlight down a shaft we could not see the bottom of and throwing pebbles down it trying to figure out how deep it went... a hole that was big enough for an elephant to fall into it that went straight down. on the way out of the cave I remember not knowing the way out and following my friend Steve strong. he borrowed my flashlight to step over a hole in the ground that dropped 15 ft and didn't tell me. it was dark and I fell into the hole following him. my chest and arms hit the edges of the hole with my legs dangling. He turned around and helped me get out and I made it out of the cave. the memory still seems crazy to me.

He had a wife a kid and another kid on the way and made a decision to keep putting himself in a confined area of an unknown (to him) cave. What kind of person makes these kinds of decisions in life? I went into the Nutty Putty Cave myself in 1991 and I was in there for an hour with a group of BYU students, leaving the cave was all I wanted to do, I could make no sense of being down there for any reason.

Since you asked, I can tell you I will tell you what kind of person he was. There are few people I have known that were more caring and thoughtful. He was a great husband and took his responsibilities seriously. He had many traits that I aspire to have in my own character. This was nothing more than a tragic accident, not a dereliction of duty. That said, I do understand your perspective that once a husband and father, you're sense of adventure may need to take a backseat to your responsibility to those who rely on you. I do not disagree with that stance. I do however disagree with the assertion that flaws in John's character is what lead him to these tragic circumstances. There are few better people.

He was 200 pounds and gravity did the work of sucking him into the hole. To reverse that was the point of the pulley system but it had to deal with friction and the soft clay the cams were attached to which ended up breaking. The actual location he was made it extremely limited who could even reach him, only smaller people could maneuver there and so would be weaker and unable to pull the larger man out. Also if you think of the angle he was trapped (imagine looking at the back of someones legs if they were upside down), to pull him was to be forcing the knees to go the opposite direction, which is why the only option was breaking them. There was not enough leverage, or space to overcome the natural effects of gravity especially as the person trapped grows weaker, who then can't help by pushing themselves.

You can’t back up and I’m a rescue worker trying to pull you by your feet, but when I do, your feet hit the cave ceiling, so the only way to get you out is to break both your knees so your feet won’t hit the cave ceiling.
