But Lucas was only successful because he had his wife challenge his ideas. He had a 'number two' who wasn't afraid to challenge him and tell him things didn't work (and a number two who was a good editor). But he can't fire his wife. He 'can' fire anyone else. Perhaps his ego got to his head - people were afraid if they challenged him, he would fire them. He probably would have. No one has a shield against being fired except a family member you cannot fire.

How to make Last Jedi watchable... 1) Switch Finn and Poe's roles. Finn remains aboard the cruiser as the doubting Thomas who's not fully trusted by the command staff. It makes more sense for him to be mistrusted seeing as he was a Stormtrooper two days ago. By all means, keep Rose there as the only person who trusts Finn or something. Poe takes a small ship to a nearby Republic military base to get reinforcements, and has a storyline where he needs to gain the trust of the local commander. He fails, and is about to leave when two new ships enter the system... 2) Luke takes his role as the Last Jedi seriously. He's been waiting on the island for the Force to send him the right person, the one person who can carry on the legacy of the Jedi. He's not sure that Rey is that person - she has to convince him, but he sees darkness in her. The "Where's Han?" moment becomes his deciding point, where he realises he can't just wait any longer, he has to trust the Force. Give Rey some _real_ training time. Bring in Yoda and Obi-wan here as well. 3) Ditch the story-breaking hyperspace tracking idea. Nobody knows how the First Order tracked them, which leads to paranoia and suspicion. Finally, during the evacuation to Crait, they realise that Finn has a tracking implant left over from when he was a Stormtrooper that he never knew about. He wants to throw himself out of the airlock, but Holdo won't let him, and it's too late anyway. 4) Leia pilots the _Raddus_ during the evactuation, not Holdo. 5) Reconfigure Kylo's fall. Luke tells how he was so caught up in his search for Jedi knowledge and wisdom that he didn't see what was growing in his own order. Snoke was there, not quite part of the order, presenting himself as a source of knowledge. Luke was so interested in the knowledge he could gain, he ignored his feelings, and trusted Snoke too much. Finally, they made their move. Luke was knocked out early in the battle, and doesn't know what happened to all his students. He blames himself for the disaster, hence his retreat. 6) Extended ground operations on Crait. Rose takes out the speeders to delay the First Order. Finn commands the ground forces, as a trained and experienced soldier. An extended ground battle as the First Order troops push into the base. This is where Finn's fight with Phasma comes, and it's done in a similar style to the deleted scene. Finally, when the Resistance troops have been pushed back to their last foothold, a squadron of x-wings appears over the cliff - Poe, a handful of Republic fighters, a YT-1300 freighter...and one old, outdated, battered, stained T-65 X-wing. Stuff happens, action scene, action scene, etc. We reach a point where Kylo is facing off against Rey. He boasts, saying that he's not going to hold back this time, he's not wounded, etc. They fight, and it's clear that Kylo is toying with her, trying to bring her to his side. Rey is pushed back, barely holding her own. He boasts about how he's going to kill Skywalker, and conquer the galaxy, and make Rey his own. *Then*, off screen, we hear "Every word you just said was wrong." Luke walks calmly across the battlefield towards Kylo, his lightsaber not even ignited. Stormtroopers take shots at him, but he just holds out one hand and catches the blasts, a la Vader in Empire. He talks to Kylo, calmly and reasonably, never raising his voice or even igniting his lightsaber as Kylo swings wildly at him, just dodging and talking. He apologises for letting Kylo down, and offers to help him find his way back. Kylo screams his refusal. Finally, unable to hit Luke, he force chokes Rey, lifts her into the air, and tries to cut her in half. Luke _catches the blade of the lightsaber_ with his bare hand, and with the slightest gesture he throws Kylo away. The Resistance fighters reach the Falcon and evacuate, leaving Kylo and the First Order behind. 7) Aboard the Falcon, Rey expresses disbelief at what Luke did. He shows her his hand, and the burn that's starting to spread. She panics, tries to get a med kit, but when she returns...there's just a pile of clothing on the floor. And a voice that whispers _we will always be with you_ . End credits.

A duel between Luke and Kylo should have been pretty close to what we got - Luke shouldn't be trying to hurt Kylo, he'd be trying to talk to him, so Kylo would be swinging at him furiously while Luke just steps aside.

ClandestineOstrich I disagree... the plot to the original film was clear, simple, and created empathy for the characters. A boy loses everything, and longs to become something more in the fight against a very simple evil. TLJ is not. It throws off the viewer too many times, and doesn’t flow well at all. It’s overstuffed for no reason. It tries to make a statement of some kind. The original was a fun good vs evil romp with a fantastic cast with chemistry for days. The new cast is embarrassing compared to the fantastic original.

My advice: Don't pay for any more Star Wars products. I don't say 'Don't watch the movies', just don't pay for them. Step 1: Make Disney broke (#GetWokeGoBroke) by not buying anything from them, ESPECIALLY Star Wars. Step 2: Disney tries to sell the Star Wars franchise for a bargain. Step 3: Wait until they get desperate, because they will. Step 4: A rich group of fanboys buys the franchise. Step 5: They start a remake of Episode 7 with a recap of the crap since ROTJ, then have Luke Skywalker waking up from a nightmare, perhaps saying "Wow! That was scary".... Jar jar may have been annoying but he at least contributed more than Rose, Holdo. My examples, Even though he was an idiot he actually helped unite the people of Naboo. The humans they were prejudice against the gungans and they didnt get along, qui-gon 1) kept jar jar along for the ride because he knew the land, how to get to gungan city and to the city of naboo. 2) By keeping jar jar around the queen of naboo saw a side of the gungans her people overlooked and decided to give them a chance and it helped unite the once seperated factions to fight a common enemy. The trade federation. Yea Jar Jar was annoying, goofy and mostly meant for kids. But he didnt hinder the progress of the heroes like rose. He didnt halt the mission to free animals. He even helped lead the gungan army against the droids (not voluntary and he accidentally destroyed some droids). It would have been interesting if Jar Jar had been the actual sith that had been hinted (theorized) it would make the prequels so much better. I like the prequels except for the few flaws.

Kathleen Kennedy and Ryan Johnson can say that their Star Wars fans all they want to but the both of them are liberal driven and their ideals were blatantly shown in this movie especially Kathleens ideals. 2. The Star Trek movies are young, edgy and "hip" but the sci-fi elements and Big Question narratives are gone, they rely heavily on phasers and explosions, and the actors simply can't replace the charisma of the original cast. Star Trek Discovery is screeching SJW trainwreck, unworthy of further comment. Meanwhile, Disney's Star Wars is merrily taking a huge dump on the original characters while shoving the important social messages of the current year down our throats (pick one: Feminism, Capitalism is Evil, Diversity, Aren't Men Just The Worst?). Not only is it poor storytelling to lecture your audience, it almost guarantees that the movie won't age well because it will be so clearly a product of its time. Watching these two beloved franchises being driven into the ground is like watching a loved one you've known and trusted your whole life suddenly begin experiencing late-stage dementia.

Honestly think they should have went with Luke starting a new Jedi order, watching him train Jedi's and returning peace to the Galaxy in episode 7 and then episode 8 we see a Padawan fall to the dark side and cause some havoc. Episode 9 could show full circle how the force keeps things in balance in an ever ending war of light and dark side by Luke dying to the fallen Padawan and fleeing off to make his own "Empire". Would have been the deepest ending meaning to a solid 9 saga series, and really keeps it open for more stories in the SWU.

The storyline made sense? I agree that the prequels are more memorable films that the new ones but the writing was not good. It was supposed to be about the good and pure Anakin falling to the dark side but he was just an asshole since day one. When he became Vader, the entire point of the three movies, there is little emotional investment because his own idiocy and bad decision making led him there, not some tragic motion of events. He probably would have turned to the dark side even if Palpatine never manipulated him at all.

It's like this: The Force Awakens - Gave us a little more of the Star Wars universe. Set up some cool villains in Kylo/Snoke, they tease Luke's appearance, etc..I also forgive them (up to this point) for making Rey a marrysue, yes she has everything handed to her on a silver platter, yes she has no flaws as a character but I kinda liked that about her in this movie. She was pure goodness. it's like, lets see what they do with it in the next film. Then The Last Jedi comes out and UTTERLY DESTROYS EVERYTHING THE FORCE AWAKENS SET UP. So yes. Knights of Ren, Luke originally going into exile and giving them a map to get him when they need his help but Rian made it where he wants to die, the build up of Snoke just to kill him, Kylo trying to commune with Vader's mask which is completely ignored in TLJ and I can't think of anymore atm

Andrew Meyer I forgot about him talking to the Vader mask! As for the Knights of Ren I just assumed they'd be in the 3rd movie so maybe that'll be a thing. And I feel like fans built up Snoke more than the movies did, I personally was annoyed that he didnt have more but since they just killed him I was okay with it since it saved the movies a lot of time. (Although if they shortened the whole resistence fuel arc they could have gave him 20 minutes of backstory). The thing that bothers me is I heard that new animated series is going to cover between Episode VI and VII so I figure they killed him so quick as a way to get people more interesting in that show cause it could cover him helping the First Order rise. I like when they do stuff like that, but not when they PLAN it that way

The Last Jedi is bad simply because it makes all of Star Wars stupid. If it was bad in itself? It wouldn't be so hated. Hell, some of the current haters might even like it like that. People have seen the prequels. Having a bad entry doesn't make you stop loving Star Wars. But The Last Jedi _broke_ the unwritten rules that allowed people to buy into the fantasy. It disturbed people to such an extent that it effectively broke the spell that the world had over them. _It made the whole series impossible to take seriously._ It caused the death of the fantasy. And that, in my opinion, was its biggest sin. Now? From now on? Star Wars is just another fictional world for the people who used to dream of being part of it. I agree with your sentiments. The deleted scenes are pretty much worthless with the exception of the two you mentioned. I had the canto bight scenes be removed entirely. That was such a waste of time. The documentary was ass. Mark Hamill is great at expressing his displeasure of the way Luke is portrayed and where the story is going. And since he is now expressing his disappointment even more and not caring about being in Star Wars anymore, he’s refueled he and George Lucas have talked about VII and VII, yet didn’t say what Lucas really thinks of them. With the prequels, Lucas didn’t have “Yes Men” that listened to him and did what he said blindly as many say, because when viewing the documentaries, featurettes and commentaries you can see and hear people not always seeing eye to eye with George, and some were able to change his mind on certain things. Johnson had Yes Men all around him that didn’t challenge him on anything. They just went with whatever because they’re all friends.

Dudes,and dudettes, I've seen every Star Wars in the theaters since the seventies except this one! When I heard that Luke was killed, and then it seemed the more days I held out seeing it, the more bad crap I kept hearing about it. The more reviews I heard, the more I felt that I did not want to help fund their "piggy bank". I damn sure won't see the retarded Solo film either. I mean, my God, I see people on the streets that look more like Solo than the guy playing him..smh. Anyway, I really hope people will send those bastards a message. If there are not any asses in the seats, they have to change their BS. They just do not deserve any of our money. Hope some feel the same. Thanks for your reviews!

Seriously! If people are simply going to be parrots or sheep, why bother typing anything at all? We are here to experience things for ourselves and form our own opinions. It's like the SWU has been taken over by, " ditto Rush," types. I personally loved TLJ, in spite of some weak plot points. And I've got to say that unlike the prequels, which felt/looked like a moderately successful video game, populated with wooden characters - at least TLJ feels like real/believable worlds, situations, and characters. Even if you don't like what they do or how.

It's not how anybody looked. For me, the prequels had flat, unbelievably bad acting - frequently on scenery that looked like passable video game graphics. And the droid army couldn't read as threatening to anybody, despite hugely outnumbering their enemies. Star Wars historically has succeeded because you believe in the characters and their motivations, and the worlds they are living in. Prequels had none of that.

TFA did at last introduce starship shielding as an observable thing that actually exists, credit where credit’s due. And Daisy Ridley figured out at least to some degree how to facial expression and she felt like way less of a Mary Sue.

J Arnett Force Awakens was unoriginal and lacked any interesting characters. Just my opinion but seeing Empire vs Rebels again was the most boring thing and didn’t really make sense for the lore. I enjoyed Rogue One literally only because of Vader carving up, the rest wasn’t terrible though. As for episodes 1 and 2, they have a lot of bad parts, but the lightsaber battles and the start of the clone wars will forever be my favourite era of Star Wars.

J Arnett, Force Awakens for one had a main character that was a Mary Sue. Rae. I actually liked how it started. Kylo stopping the bolt. Po and Finn interaction as they escape, in the tie fighter. Once Rae showed up it started to go down hill from there. And as John said. There wasn't much originality in many things. Star Killer base. It really compared quite a lot to the 4th movie.

The movie is enjoyable when you watch it the first time in the cinema (it's a family tradition to see the new Star Wars movie in cinema, don't judge me). But when you sit back after the high as worn off and think about the movie in the greater scheme of Star Wars, this movie is shit. Even worse than the Force Awakens. Do people realize that Rey hasn't had a single bit of training? None. And she's beating Dark Jedi on her first time holding a lightsaber and reversing force mindreading when she thought the force was a myth the day before. The characters in these films are just so bad.

The reason it's low on the rental list is there are very few places you can rent from anymore. Redbox basically IS the national rental market that follows base pricing, with a few regional hold-out's mixed in here and there. For streaming "rentals", the service has basically total control to push up pricing for a "hot" property like TLJ. If it's $7 to rent-stream, and $15.99 at WalMart, which one is a better deal? They also have control over where to put that rental... plastered over the landing screens, or buried 10 layers deep in the "sci-fi" section. I actually rented the blue ray from a local drug store, about 4 months after it came out, for 99 cents. Watched the deleted scenes... skipped the bonus: Director excuses me for not getting the movie "documentary". I am really glad I won't ever have to watch it again... never have to deal with my kids pulling it out of the bin for the ride to Grandma's house. And we own TFA. And my kid dressed up like Rey for Haloween, and went for weeks after TFA with a Rey hair-do. So anyone who wants to argue that Johnson was just continuing on with TFA, that complete and total BS. As for Solo, that's one I won't even bother renting.
