Right before my wife and I got married we had this discussion. I basically told her that the decision was hers and hers alone to make. If she wanted to change her last name outright, cool. If she wanted to hyphenate her name, cool. If she wanted to make her maiden name her middle name and take my last name, cool. If she didn't want to change her name at all, cool. It's *HER* name, it should be *HER* choice. Point blank. Later for that forcing-women-to-do-this-and-that nonsense. It is 20-friggin'-16.

Changing ur last name isn’t sexism...?
@ElmTreigh
@ElmTreigh 4 жыл бұрын
@@roginaibrahim7317 back in the day, the woman was either sold or promised to a man & she had to take in his name as "proof of property/ownership". It's commonly known that a woman marries into the man's family, not a man marries into the woman's family. Once a woman marries, she more or less, belongs to the man's family now. You rarely, if ever, see it the other way around. Which is why, if you're a woman, changing your last name is rooted in sexism for the reasons mentioned.
@roginaibrahim7317
@roginaibrahim7317 4 жыл бұрын
ElmTreigh or maybe she just wants to take that name?? Why does everything have to be about that? You could literally tell Jeanie was trying her hardest to have Adrienne keep her last name when Adrienne was the one who wanted to change it herself. Plus you say “back in the day” it’s 2019 you can forget abt the past and just let people do what they do, if she wants to change it let her and live at peace. You don’t have to say “but you know it’s rooted from sexism!” That’s not necessary.
@ElmTreigh
@ElmTreigh 4 жыл бұрын
@@roginaibrahim7317 I was commenting on how, for a woman, taking the last name is rooted in sexism for the reasons mentioned. I wasn't commenting on Adrienne specifically. I do agree with you that Jeannie was being a tad pushy in the subject. Correct me if I'm, but was Jeannie on her last days with her ex-husband? That could be a factor on her aggressive projection of the last name change. And again, you are right about the times, in that it has changed enough to where the woman can choose to change or keep her last name, however, there are still those that still believe that the woman SHOULD change her last name to her husband's for reasons, like the one's I've mentioned or because its tradition or because its within their culture. I'm Mexican American & it's in my culture, both within the family & religiously, to take the husband's last name. I even spoke to my boyfriend about it once & he said I was going to take his last name. When I asked why, he said because it's how it's supposed to be, its tradition, he liked that people would know I'm with him, etc. I asked him this in 2018. So the thought of ownership & property is still there, just disguised into "belonging" rather than "owning". Last names used to be made by a what a man's profession was. Like carpenter or blacksmith. Before, that, it was James of [insert town, city, & country] to identify. Or it was made by a combination of the parents names, father's name first, mothers name second, like Marbeat would have been mine. I do agree that it shouldn't be that way anymore, but reality is, to some extent, it still is. Which is why it's still a question us women have to ask. The man doesn't ask that about themselves. To them, its automatically known they'll keep their last name unless asked to change it by their wife, which admittedly is rare.

Uh Obviously DUH lol ! Shade is the part when Jeannie asks Adrienne to let her change her name on her phone to Houghton when she "officially" gets married. Although Adrienne isn't married yet, she will soon, she's still engaged, in love & serious about getting married. Jeannie came off a little disrespecful because it makes it seem like she's not supportive of Adrienne's decision. Others like @ LilDurk above^ might think it's because she's been engaged before and never got married so it's hard to believe it'll actually happen this time which is rude by the way. I like Jeannie & I'm sure she had no malicious intentions, perhaps it's because she prefers Bailon better , but that was unnecessary. & yup I wrote a paragraph lol hi5 if u read it

In a lot of Asian cultures, it's totally normal for women to keep their last name. I'm Vietnamese and like Jeannie I probably keep my last name. I get what Loni is trying to say about a couple becoming one. However, to me I feel like my last name carries my Vietnamese culture & my own self identity. I think that's where Jeannie is coming from too.

How does a name carry your identity? Outside of the culture you reside in, nobody knows who you are or what your name means. Unless you sat there and explained in detail to every person who asked. The person inside of you and your memories and your family are what carries your culture and your identity. A name is a name.
@novivianngo

osimeon00 Being Vietnamese-American has a huge part to my identity. My parents gave me an American name so I can fit in but my last name always reminded me of my Vietnamese culture & roots. I think a lot of V-A. ppl can relate to me. A lot of my personal experiences growing up has a lot to do with my last name. I was made fun of for my last name & it took me a while to be proud of the last name my dad given me. If my last name was let say something white. Vivian "Johnson" for ex, I think a lot of my life experiences would be quite different. Changing my last name to something like that would make me feel like I'm erasing a huge part of what I identify myself as. Maybe you think a name is just a name. But to other people it holds significant value and life experiences.

osimeon00 my father passed away a few years ago. My parents were never married so I always had my mothers last name. I was extremely close to my dad. I changed my last name to his to honor him. So don't tell me last names don't carry identity! I love my last name.

Once again I agree with Jeannie I would never change my last name it represents all that I am, my family's story, my roots my everything and that would never change just because of marriage and I don't have to prove nothing to anybody, If some people wanna think that's because I don't really love him, it's not a real marriage or I still wanna be independent even married let them think it's my life. But I respect who chooses change her last name, only the woman in the situation knows what she pictured as a dream marriage and all the details it contains, that she dreamed all her life about it's a decision that will make her happy and I fully respect that you gotta do what you have to do to be happy, now I don't respect women that let people make their choices for them that's just a weak person with no personality

It's surprising to see such seemingly modern and independent women have such old-fashioned views, especially Loni. I agree with Jeannie, your last name represents your roots and where you come from. Instead of being proud of the name that she has established her career on, Adrienne is just counting down the days until she can change it.

You are clearly missing the point but if you aren't Western you won't get it. It is the fact that Adrienne has the right to CHOOSE to take his name. In the West whether North America or Western Europe we have the right, as women, to choose. No one is forcing Adrienne to do anything she is doing it b/c she wants to. America is fundamentally Christian so in the bible 2 become 1 flesh and the symbolism of taking your husbands name represents that.

+iman campbell I am "Western" and I know that it's a choice. I'm just surprised that so many women still CHOOSE to continue, what I think is, an outdated tradition. Especially celebrities, who establish their careers and their brands on their names, and whose marriages don't always last. It just doesn't seem like the smartest decision in my opinion.

Loni, "They Become One..A wife takes the husbands name". I have a problem with this, like aside from a long tradition of this, why is it that woman are the ones literally bringing life onto this world, and the man gets to brand the baby with his name, as well as the wife?(It's a long standing tradition and I don't care that people do it, but other than to follow tradition, I just want to know why they do it?Why can't it be the other way around?? Here, I thought progress was good. )

I didn't question that it isn't stated in the Bible. I wrote, "Really Loni." There was no question mark after that, nor did I say, "Where does it say that in the Bible?" That being said, whether I judge someone, I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you have a right to yours. Have a good day.

Ebony La'Shawn ... You missed the entire point. "Christians" love to quote the Bible but won't quote the Bible. You don't pull out what you want and ignore the rest. It doesn't matter if the whole world has premarital sex, if it is wrong in the bible, followers of Christ are not supposed to do it. And this comment wasn't judging, just pointing out hypocrisy. I mean, I love Loni and didn't take this seriously, but no judging was done..

There's a difference between becoming ONE and becoming HIM.That's why I'm for the hyphenated name, because it reflects more the real situation of the marriage which is they both become something NEW, a couple. And their shared identity is not the same as his single identity.The woman does not give up her identity and take HIS one, hence it should also reflect in the names.

Mia Z It's a mans world. Most people carry their fathers last name anyway, so from one mans name to another, it shouldn't matter
@poke089
@poke089 8 жыл бұрын
In addition to what lady rodriguez said, about carrying one's father's name, this likely stems from what happened at creation as the Bible records: Eve was created out of Adam's rib, so in marriage to him, she's reuniting with the man, her man, becoming one with him. She takes on his name, and Biblically, Adam gave his wife a personal name, though they both received their race name (i.e. mankind/Adam/human) from God. The Biblical verses that document this in case you're interested: • _Genesis __2:21__-24 (KJV)_ 21 _And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam,_ _and he slept: and he took one of his ribs,_ _and closed up the flesh instead thereof;_ 22 _And the rib,_ _which the Lord God had taken from man,_ _made he a woman,_ _and brought her unto the man._ 23 _And Adam said,_ _This is now bone of my bones,_ _and flesh of my flesh:_ _she shall be called Woman,_ _because she was taken out of Man._ 24 _Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother,_ _and shall cleave unto his wife:_ _and they shall be one flesh_ • _Genesis __3:20__ (KJV)_ 20 _And Adam called his wife's name Eve;_ _because she was the mother of all living._ • _Genesis 5:2 (KJV)_ 2 _Male and female created he them;_ _and blessed them,_ _and called their name Adam,_ _in the day when they were created._

I think it's unfair that women have to be the ones choosing between last names... Nevertheless, I'd go with what Tamera did, in view of the fact that no matter what, I will ALWAYS keep my own last name. At the end of the day, this is an individual's own choice and I don't believe there is a right or wrong prevail. Each host has a valid point!

He goes above and beyond, says openly how he doesn't mess with any of the foolery and tells her all the time how beautiful she is without makeup, with it ,how sexy is, how talented she is. Yall don't even know their relationship to comment saying some b.s like that. Just because the media wants to showcase negativity doesn't mean its true!!! I think (THIS IS JUST MY OPINION) When a woman falls in love and she marries the man of her dreams, she will always talks about him. Especially when the wedding is fast approaching. As a Filipino, we only get to marry once. Marriage for us is once in a life time. When I got engaged I always talk about my upcoming wedding back then because I was sooooo EXCITED! So, I understand where A is coming from. She is just excited about her wedding. Because I've been there so I understand her.

this show has been pissing me off lately. i never liked Tamar but she was the Alpha as far as i'm concerned. she told it like it is, didn't care if people didn't agree with her opinions, and it was refreshing. Loni seems to have taken over the Alpha role but she's taking it too seriously. she's not being funny as much and she instead cuts people off constantly just to get her 2 cents in. she's a lot more aggressive now that Tamar is gone and you can tell it kinda gets to the other women sometimes. Tamar did the same thing and constantly cut people off but that was her thing. it's not Loni's thing and Loni used to be really nice and mushy so i just wish she wouldn't try so hard to be the obnoxious one.

I now see the value in Tamar rolling her eyes, making noises, twisting her lips extra hard, raising her hand to interrupt and saying "girl bye" when Adrienne and Jeannie are saying something silly, naive or overly positive, which they do a lot. Adrienne and Jeannie are too focused on being positive and supporting everything, but I thought the title of the show meant being bold enough to call out nonsense. Seems like when they read the comments of people "keeping it real" Adrienne always says the "negative" commenters don't have a life, then Jeannie gives a positivity speech. Why even bother bringing up gossip topics if Adrienne and Jeannie don't want to gossip? They don't have to be nasty, but don't try to put a positive spin on dumb things and say a negative comment means someone doesn't have a life, then turnaround and use those negative comments in "we read you". Maybe Loni is becoming different because without Tamar cutting the foolishness off she's stuck alone trying to be "real" and maybe she's becoming annoyed. If Loni wasn't speaking out and being "real" this show would be unbearable, and clearly these grown people in the audience didn't come to the show to hear a bunch of overly positive look in the mirror and believe you can fly speeches, because they clap loud and hard when Loni keeps it "real." I wish Loni luck, it's a dream come true to have a show but man when you're alone in your opinions.....

lmao having a different last name than your child isn't that big of a deal. My mom and I have different last names because her and my dad are divorced and obviously I kept his last name. It's never created a problem.

The whole school thing is BS. My daughter's school knows who her mommy is and who her daddy is. We are together for over 10yrs and choose not to get married. I don't need to have the same last name as my children and partner, in my opinion.

The day I received the marriage license, I was in the Social Security office getting my name changed. It was a huge hassle, but I love looking at my driver's license and seeing Mrs. *Husband's last name.* In fact, I kept my middle name; since my maiden name is very abrupt and sounds weird as a middle name. I didn't feel like I was losing my identity or anything. My middle name is still a family name and fits with my new last name much nicer.

I guess I assumed that because Adrienne is Hispanic that she would keep both. I really like that tradition of honoring both families.

Adrienne's highlight is poppin'! It looks so good! :) But, I personally plan on taking my husband's last name because in my culture it is rare for a married woman to take her husband's last name. It means a lot to me to take my boyfriend's last name.
