This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together, how this dam he built up for himself is breaking apart the more he gets closer to his new surrogate daughter. Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”.

There is a reason why Henry is shown again at the beginning. That was for the fans, because that's exactly how the cut had been made in the game. One shot, then black, then dam. Maria to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust." Probably the most important sentence of this episode if not of the whole series. Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon." This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his. Ellie drank from Joel's liquor and it was "STILL gross". That was a callback to the DLC. Next episode Ashley Johnson (Game Ellie) will properly get an appearance in the Ellie Flashback (Game DLC). This episode was a feast for everyone who played Part 2. we met Dina, properly Jessie, Shimmer, Bison Bar, sheep, kids playing snowball, Astronauts, Jackson see from the inside. Simply fantastic.

In the beginning, Tommy was the fuck up, and Joel was the caregiver, provider, and protector. Suddenly, Tommy's life is on track, and Joel's is a mess. His identity is challenged while at the same time he is faced with the fact that his brother found heaven, but Joel was "the wrong kind of people" so he wasn't allowed in (and his brother agreed by his actions, regardless of what he says). Then he is becoming attached to Ellie, and he is having more panic attacks in fear of losing her, as well as him having to come to terms with his need for assistance as his body fails (again his identity of caregiver, provider, and protector is challenged when Ellie helps him, etc). It's too much, and he breaks down. Ellie grew up in an orphanage. I'm not going to spoil what life there was like. But a potential mother figure in Marlene left her. A potential mother figure in Tess died. Potential family in Henry and Sam died brutally in front of her. Joel was going to abandon her. Whether or not there are others is spoilers. Ellie told Sam she was afraid of ending up alone. Joel leaving would have, emotionally, left her alone. Also, fuck Joel for telling Ellie she has no idea what grief is. If anything, a child with no secure attachments to caregivers knows grief more than a parent who lost a child -> just from a neuro/psych perspective.

Madison kept it together better than I did watching Pedro and Bella - they really put me through it this week! What's so great about the writing on this show is that we get to have such well fleshed-out characters who are just as flawed as the rest of us - so much so that even when their behaviour has us rolling our eyes in frustration, we at least understand the cause behind it! Great performances, beautiful scenery, touching music - this show is wonderful!

I imagine when Joel talks to Tommy about his dreams that it's most likely memories of Sarah that he relives; and in a world such as theirs even good dreams have become nightmares for Joel because when he wakes he's instantly reminded that Sarah isn't there and why, which speaks to his line " all I know is when I wake up... I've lost something." Life truly did stop for Joel about the same time his wrist watch stopped.😔

Thanks, Madison! Thanks, Christian! 🪶 Another solid episode with an effective cliffhanger. I especially loved seeing *Elaine* *Miles* playing a small role; I enjoyed her in over 100 episodes of NORTHERN EXPOSURE (1990). It was just as delightful to see *Rutina* *Wesley* again after enjoying her work in most of TRUE BLOOD (2008), several episodes of HANNIBAL (2015) and a single episode of THE WALKING DEAD (2019). ❧ If you're curious about the movie the townsfolk of Jackson City, Wyoming were watching together, it was THE GOODBYE GIRL (1977) and I highly recommend it if you're ever in the mood for a great comedy/drama/romance! #MACReact #TheLastOfUs #TLOU #TheLastOfUsHBO

Right? Falling on your back from the 2nd floor is enough to break your back, crack your skull and a few bones alone too. That’s totally traumatic on its own without the impaling injury, it’s insane so many gamers are upset they didn’t keep that in the show. It would be totally unrealistic a 50+ year old would be able to pop up and jump on a horse after that kind of fall.

Then I remember she only knows whatever Tommy told her and want to smack him a few times for blaming his actions on his brother.
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 Жыл бұрын
I dunno, Tommy seems to fully own his part (in the bar he won't let Joel take all the blame, correcting him by pointing out that "... _we_ did things...") so I doubt he lied that much. As with most things people related, the truth won't be one simple story so i'd bet it's _partly_ Tommy presenting himself in the best light (and maybe even almost bragging about how tough his big brother is) but _combined with_ Maria interpreting for herself too. People like simple boxes. Maria loves Tommy and can't square the guy she knows with a past as a murderous raider so needs some "bad influence" to make it make sense and a conveniently absent "bad" big brother fits the bill nicely (whereas the truth is more nuanced and harder to deal with - Tommy did those bad things _and_ is the decent man she loves, Tommy's a "grown ass man and a war veteran" _and_ was likely influenced by Joel etc.).

It was also pretty lame of Tommy that he didn't at least send Joel a message with 'I'm okay'. He didn't have to tell him where he was if the commune was concerned about their location leaking but the entire reason Joel set off, accepted to take Ellie, lost Tess, etc. was because he thought Tommy was in trouble while he was actually getting married and having kids.
@bridgethaines7127
@bridgethaines7127 Жыл бұрын
@@clarkmichaels822 That too. Tommy is not really good at thinking through the full extent of responsibilities. He focuses on the being a hero part and tends to ignore the rest of it. Like he doesn't let his brother know he'll be out of touch but is ok (let alone married and expecting) while gung ho helping Jackson out and being part of the commune, doesn't gel with the military after getting overseas as if he didn't think through what being a soldier was going to really entail, doesn't gel with the Fireflies after letting them come between him and Joel and has to "ditch" them in his own words.
@krayzy932
@krayzy932 Жыл бұрын
@@clarkmichaels822 He wanted to move on with his life and move past the horrible things he did in the past. Joel made the decision to trek across the country to try and find him. That was Joel's choice. Tommy didn't have to let him know he was okay. He's a grown man.

@@balantor Yeah, detector senses antibodies. Just like COVID swab test. They don't detect the virus directly. They detect common human immunity system response to the virus. This is why this has been the only shooter video game that I like. There are so many video games out there where you can just turn off your feelings and become a killing machine, shooting and killing you way into getting better and better at such violence with no issues, but this game was different. It was created so that you feel remorse for killing, especially the NPCs you don't have to kill. (like most of the dogs) This world is still so far fetched but it to me allows me to feel the way I would feel if this were to really take place. to many of us, life is worth something and to just kill with no remorse is not in any way desirable.
