Feel like this episode is a bit under appreciated. This is a deep look into why Ellie is the way she is. Joel said “you don’t know what loss is” in the previous episode but we can clearly see she does. She lost her first and only love, Riley.

@@TheRomansReact , That seems right. As the guys said the chemistry between Ellie and Riley was so great . Sadly we knew it was going to end badly. In spite of that they had me hoping that it wouldn't. It was a beautiful love story . With a tragic ending. The more so because they are so young. Like one of the guys said Romeo and Juliet . I rate it !

I love that Ellie was immediately mad at having been bit. She wasn't sad, she wasn't scared, she was furious and flew off into a destructive rage. Having finally shown her true feelings for Riley and having them reciprocated and Riley agree to stay, Ellie had just got the one thing she wanted most. In fact, Riley may have even been the only really good thing she's ever had in her life, only to immediately have her taken away from her... and she was pissed! Riley, on the other hand, seemed to feel more of a mix of sorrow and guilt, but I loved that she was determined that they should make the most of whatever quality time they had left with each other. That little clasp of the hand between Ellie and Joel was powerful. As much as Joel wanted Ellie to be safe, I also think he was scared for himself and in that moment was truly grateful she had stayed.

If this episode was a book, it would be seen as a great coming-of-age novel. The tragic loss of a loved one didn't destroy Ellie. Going through it and the pain and fear made her stronger and shows Ellie lives for her, going through with the pain because we don't take the easy way out.

I thought Bella’s acting was superb in this one! Her chemistry with Riley, her scream at realizing she’s bit and her and Joel (Pedro) at the end. Him grabbing her in pain and comfort with her controlled panic. Tear rolled down my cheek. Magnificent.

Y'all are the few reactors I've seen actually love this episode. I've seen too many people calling this filler and it's anything but. This is showing us who Ellie is at her core. Yeah, she's been kind of an annoying kid, but she's a damn loyal and protective friend in a world where that's wildly rare. I also loved that they changed the story and had Joel be awake as opposed to the game where he's unconscious the whole time. It allowed us to see him finally accept real help from this kid when he's sort of been refusing her this whole time. I've also seen people say this was a waste of an episode because there's only 2 left now, but from what I remember (and I could be wrong) but there are only two massive plot points left. And we're getting the first one next episode. Obviously there are story beats that may not make it, but the big stuff that's left will be covered. And goddamn Bella Ramsey. I've been impressed the whole show, but her naturalness on screen is phenomenal. She feels so real in this role, it's consistently mind boggling. So talented.

Things I love about this episode and just cool stuff to think about: 1. Both FEDRA and the Fireflies use propaganda, child soldiers, and involve civilians in their violence, whether intentional or not. Both organizations have their strengths and weaknesses, but Ellie and Riley are still a little too young to see that both groups are manipulative in different ways. 2. In episode 4, when Ellie says she hurt someone before, it's pretty obvious that Riley is the first person she had to kill. Which is horrifying because that makes Riley her first love and her first kill. 3. The episode name, Left Behind, has several meanings, but the obvious one is that Ellie always feels left behind. First, Riley dies, then Tess dies, then Henry and Sam die, and now she's scared Joel will die. So, when she refuses to leave Joel it's her desperation to not lose another person, like she said in the last episode, "Everyone I have ever cared for has either died or left me." 4. The theme of loss in this episode is really interesting, especially when thinking about the last episode. When Joel says, "You have no idea what loss is." He's both right and wrong. He's right that Ellie has no concept of some of the things Joel has lost, his daughter, his home, and his entire world for 36 years was destroyed. He's wrong, though, in thinking that Ellie doesn't understand loss at all. She's an orphan, grew up in a FEDRA school without any family, and is constantly dealing with the sudden death of loved ones. Ellie has lost the entirety of her childhood, and, at the very least, Joel had 36 years of a normal life that Ellie will never have.

I think one way to look at the title is that it was Ellie that was left behind. It's implied Ellie not only live out Riley's last hours/days with her, but was also responsible for having to kill her when she turned. as she's previously said, everyone who she's loved has either left or died. This with Joel was her taking control and doing what she can to ensure know one else leaves her.

In the opening, the fungus does form the shape of the United States (the contiguous ones, anyway). The beginning is it sprouting where Seattle is, then spreading out and concentrating in the location of the major cities. Then it jumps to forming the shape of the Infected's face, then the barbed wire, then Ellie and Joel. I really like how they put it together.

Not-so-fun fact: if you know your Mortal Kombat lore, you know what happens to Riley after - the bit we don't see. In MK lore, Baraka & Mileena are/were lovers so when Ellie wins that fight in the game and her Baraka skewers Riley's Mileena, that foreshadows Ellie having to 'skewer' Riley once she's turned... Such a great episode, too. It ALMOST passes Long Long Time as my favourite episode so far

A beautiful episode and a masterclass in storytelling. It's true talent when you can take a character (who we know what happens with her) and still make a compelling prequel of sorts. I'm glad Ellie got a moment of closure before the heartbreak as well. She told Riley not to go and her response was, "okay". So fucking sad.

This episode is indeed from the DLC, Shaun. And Riley was mentioned twice throughout the season: the first when Marlene asked a chained Ellie in episode one "Was Riley a terrorist too?" and in episode 4 where Ellie after shooting Bryan in Kansas tells Joel this isn't her first time shooting someone meaning she shot Riley after she turned and then Ellie was found by Marlene and the Fireflies the next morning where episode 1 takes place.

So this was the actual story from the Game DLC and comic book. This was a well known part of the story to those of us that have played the game and they did such a good job with it. I disagree that Ellie is easily manipulated or doesn't have her own opinion. Just because she agrees with the officer that Fedra is needed in certain ways doesn't mean she it's not her own opinion. I would think buy now you would realize that even the villains have a valid view of their goal in many cases even if the protagonists just see them as evil. We just saw several episodes back that a "Good guy" group over threw Fedra and then immediately became just as bad. This episode was there for the reason of showing what Ellie's past has given her in terms of her motivations and outlooks on life. This is definitely one of the best shows ever made in my opinion.

Just a note on the scene with Ellie in the officer's office- To be fair, the Boston QZ Fedra are meant to be a lot less brutal than the Kansas City Fedra that Kathleen's people revolted against. Still not great, what with the public executions and all that. But they weren't out there raping people and beating folks to death. So I think it's fair of him to have the point of view that they're doing more good than bad.

Thanks gúys. Best episode so far for me is Kin because it reveals Joel underneath the guarded exterior. Ellie has always been an irritating character before now. The best phrase I can think of is a "spoiled brat". Now it pulls it all together. She's physically small, female and very intelligent so her behavior is understandable including with the gun. It puts her on a more equal power footing with the people around her. She is never going to be able to kill someone with her bare hands her strength is in other areas.
@sarcasmxkate
@sarcasmxkate Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say spoiled brat. Any kid in this environment isn't exactly spoiled. Was she kind of annoying? Sure, but what 14 year old isn't? She's an orphaned kid who doesn't have a big friend group and was clearly bullied. She's earned the right to be a little annoying. It's odd that people found her bratty. Teenage years are hard and weird in a "normal" situation. Ellie's going through them in a post apocalyptic world without any sort of real guidance. So yeah, she's gonna be a little off. As for not being able to beat someone with her bare hands, she beat the fuck outta Bethany. Don't underestimate the small ones. They tend to be more vicious.

If you pay attention, the episode shows you how the story with Ellie and Riley ends. They don't have to show that explicitly. Riley played Mileena in MK2 and Ellie played Baraka (last game). Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley. That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker with her knife in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through and she killed him because an infected bit Riley. Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall and took Ellie with her. At least that's what I think. There are hardly any other options. The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her. Last episode Ellie wanted a sip of whiskey from Joel and said "STILL gross". Here we see Ellie's first time. Also, we've learned that Ellie's first impulse is to leave when she feels pushed away or is pushed away or is disappointed in any way, but she keeps coming back. This is one parallel between Joel and Riley. Another parallel is, both are Ellie's protectors. And don't forget Ellie's greatest fear of ending up alone. In the end, she will try everything possible to save Joel, which she was not able to do with Riley. Ellie has lost Riley and Sam to the fungus. She is the cure. She wants her survival to have value. Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. And there are always only 2 options to choose from. And both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. There is only one clearly good or one clearly bad choice. The officer at the beginning is most likely not nice, he is manipulative. Leaving Fedra obviously does not exist as an option. But orphans are easy to manipulate, as you can see from Ellie, who simply repeats what the officer told her in the conversation with Riley. The Fireflys are no different. Everyone comes in quickly, they made you feel you belong to a family and you are important to them. In fact, Riley is parked alone in the mall with bombs. These also kill civilians, as we saw in Episode 1 on Tess when one of these bombs exploded, killing two teenagers. Lives that are stuck. Eat or die. The series in general is all about the number 2. Bill and Frank, Ellie and Joel, Ellie and Riley, Sam and Henry, Joel and Tommy, Kathleen and Daniel, two choices, Mortal Kombat 2, joke book volume 2, red or green. T(w)ogethernes
