@@shelfdefence1112 offscreen character development happens all over films, he became soft to people, which is different it infected because people have lives and are in control, Joel wasn’t constantly looking over his shoulder, he was relaxed and the closest thing to a father in the closest thing to a normal life, he lived in a community of people he trusts like his brother. He frequently interacts with a new people which is made clear to you because he talks about people coming through at the final flashback. The Joel from the first game is just an empty husk groaning through life, then after his time with Ellie he opens his heart again and learns to care again.

@@cread_227 I agree with you, I'm sure almost everyone knew or figured joel would die in this game, it's just really poor timing in the game, not enough build up or emotional prepping beforehand and honestly not much pay off either, shock is fine but shock alone is not a good pay off, it's kind of like in a movie where the sequel kills off the main character in the first 15 minutes, you need to use those minutes to build that dreading and certainty, as well as some concrete motivation. I'd word this better but It i'm sure someone will try to explain it or dismiss it.

Deadpoppin To have Joel have a death that narratively makes sense, and not have it be done by the daughter of someone who had no real relevance to the story until now. Abby’s concept as a character is good, Joel’s death was expected. The execution of both was bad. I’m not emotionally invested in Abby at all, why should I care about her and her group AFTER she killed Joel? If there was a midpoint game that came before this staring Abby and her group before the events of this game, Joel’s death really wouldn’t have been this controversial.

The Outsider The better option was to have more interaction between them, especially because we as the player know of Joel’s lie. That would’ve had a lot more interesting than what actually happened. His death neither made sense, nor did any justice to his character imo. I’m not saying he should’ve had some hero’s death, in context of the story he doesn’t deserve that, but something that did justice to the character. Knowing the ending of this game makes me personally feel like his death was basically in vain, after killing so many people, Ellie is going to realize she’s on the wrong path at the very end? It’s bad storytelling imo. If you enjoy the game, you do you, I’m just trying to explaining why Joel’s death is so hated.

I am 12 hours in and just doing the first flashback with Ellie and Joel and I couldn't help but get emotional at it. I also thought "if I didn't know how this was going to end this would have been a massive emotional rollercoaster" the leaks ruined this game in more than 1 way. This games writing is absolutely insane. Naughty Dog have crafted such a brutal but beautiful story here.

By 2017 most of the staff left however, probably due to the unhealthy crunch culture Naughty Dog was/is employing (there was a kotaku article published about it recently by a well known game journalist). Also Druckmann is the vice president of the company currently, *and* the director, so it's not like some rando wandered into the studio and got the job. He's still a fucking rat tho. He's gone on dozens of murder sprees, the worst of which was when he stopped a vaccine from being created and stopping Ellie from saving the world. Stempy you’re so lucky. I fucking loved Joel and Ellie. And it hurt watching him die like he didn’t even matter. And it left me feeling bitter towards Ellie in the end. Then I realized they were completely out of character during the most important parts. This game isn’t canon for me Joel and Ellie are in Jackson living a happy life. Ellie still believes Joel and that’s the end of that
