I like how in almost every episode, there's a shot of Ellie with soft sunlight shining on her. "When you're lost in the darkness ..."

Also fun fact. The lighting as the mall lights up is the Lesbian flag color foreshadowing Elle's preference also makes since with Tess asking her if she had a BF waiting for her and she said no. Also the ardade room had bi flag color signalling to Riley. This is shown also when Elle on the roof top tried to ask did she join fire flies for a boy. Elle didn't know her preference. There was also a bit of jealousy when Elle ask "a girl our age" trying to figure out if Riley left for another girl. This whole ep showed how Elles child hood was rushed and then crushed.

Oh I didn't pick up on the colors, thank you for letting me know! Riley and Ellie were so sweet, they're ending was so tragic but it was nice that they had a little moment at the end when they both kind of expressed how they felt. So at least Ellie didn't have that feeling of regret for not sharing. Even if it is the tiniest silver lining. Absolutely loved learning more about Ellie this episode!

Joel to Ellie: "You have no idea what loss is!" Another fantastic episode with a lot of character development for Ellie. Some obviously, some hidden. In any case, many questions are answered here directly and indirectly. Riley chose Mileena in Mortal Kombat II and Ellie played Baraka (last game). Both were Lovers in the game. Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley. I think it's clear she stabbed her. That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through in her because an infected bit her friend and killed him. Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall and took Ellie with her. At least that's what I think. There are hardly any other options. Mortal Kombat was supposed to be the game in the game, but Naughty Dog didn't get permission. So they invented a game. Now HBO has rights to both games and that's how it became possible. The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her. Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. And there are always only 2 options to choose from. And both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. There is only one clearly good or one clearly bad choice. The officer at the beginning is not nice, he is manipulative. This can be seen in Riley who is allowed to supervise the sewage work. The Fireflys are no different. Everyone comes in quickly, they made you feel you belong to a family and you are important to them. In fact, Riley is parked alone in the mall with bombs. Lives that are stuck. Eat or die. The series in general is all about the number 2. Bill and Frank, Ellie and Joel, Ellie and Riley, Sam and Henry, Joel and Tommy, Kathleen and Daniel, two choices, Mortal Kombat 2, joke book volume 2, red or green. I actually thought Ashley Johnson (OG Ellie) would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory. Most likely in the season finale. Next episode Troy Baker (OG Joel) will get his cameo.

They stay together while they turn, problem is Elle doesn't turn. So yeah Elle has to shoot sRiley once she realized she never turned. The mall was a Firefly base (they thought there were no infected there). So once they came to check on Riley they found her dead with Elle. Remember Marline said that she is the reason Elle was put in the fedra school cause she promised her mother to watch over that. This is why when Riley asked Marlene is Elle can come she said no. This is also why the Fire flies didn't shoot Elle on site after realizing she was bitten. The reason we don't see Rily's end is because this is a memory for Elle. She doesn't want to relive it even in a memory so the audience never sees it. She even tell s joel she doesn't want to talk about it when she explains that she has shot someone before. The boy wasn't the first. This is also why she tried to help Sam with her blood.

@@Wickedleme It's hard for me to follow you. Actually, I think you're just repeating what I said in other words. I am convinced that she did not shoot Runner-Riley. To do this, she must first disarm Runner-Riley in a fight, because she is in possession of the gun. Ellie has the knife on her. Furthermore, there are many indications of stabbing, as I have written. The Fireflys used the mall as a base because Fedra's propaganda machinery works well and everyone thought there were infected in there. In principle what I said. Don't see the point you want to convey to me. Everything I have written makes perfect sense and is logically thought out. Marlene shows up because Riley didn't show up for her trip and not because of Ellie. She suspects her in the orphanage. Whether this was a memory of Ellie is probably debatable. I don't believe that. She doesn't stand at the door for an hour and remembers. I think this is an ordinary flashback (like Bill and Frank) that is simply supposed to show the behavior pattern from Ellie and the consequences she draws from the situation from then to now. She was willing to leave Joel, as with Riley, because she was rejected or felt that way, and returned to Joel like she returned to Riley. Here with Joel, however, she can actually do something. She doesn't want to lose another friend. Furthermore, Marlene never told Ellie that she had promised her mother anything. There was no mention of Ellie's mother at all. At least not in the series and certainly not to Ellie. That's what she said to Joel in the game. This is the series. Furthermore, this does not mean that Marlene constantly has Ellie under observation. She thinks she's safe there and that's it.

@@TomTomson81 Marlene mentions elle’s mother the episode where she is chained to the radiator. Eli says that they put her into that stupid federal school. And Marlene replies with I’m the one who put you there. She said something along the lines of either. I promised her mother I take care of you or I told your mother and make sure you’re OK something like that. You can go ahead and look back and watch it.

@@TomTomson81 also, it is a flashback but it’s to showcase that she’s thinking of the time that she had to deal with Riley. In TV they do this no she would not be sitting there thinking for an hour. The whole episode for us would have been a millisecond for her. It’s like when you’re remembering some thing in your life it doesn’t take hours for you to remember it takes just a few seconds. This is not a theory This is a literal filmmaking which is something I actually know a lot about.

Ellie's gay panic around Riley is adorable. One thing that really stood out to me was Ellie was doing ok, sort of, fighting the clicker on her own, but when she saw it attacking Riley, she went positively beast mode on it. Ellie is absolutely ferocious in defending those she cares about. I think a lot of her resolve to never give up also came from Riley - fighting for every moment no matter what. I think most people in that situation would have taken the "easy" way out with the gun. I probably would have.
