I never understood the hype. I played the game a few months ago and it wasn't this phenomenal experience people say it is. It's a good story, but it's still just an interactive movie with no replay value. My theory is "The Last of Us" came out when people were tired of traditional zombie games. So they saw it as fresh and better than it really is.

I hate this game with a passion. It’s the biggest mediocre game I’ve ever seen and the fact it gets thrown around as game of the year and genre defining really irks me. Why? Well partially because other companies like to follow the money, and if this mediocre copy and paste job is successful, which it was, other companies will follow suite and become “inspired” to concepts from this game… it was The only thing I see it as being praise worthy is the interaction between characters… that’s it. The story sucked, moved nowhere in tlou 1 and the characters by themselves are annoying at times. The emotional set pieces are thrown around like cliche junk food. What I mean is, u get introduced to some emotional concept, only for that concept to be killed or absolutely wiped out within the same arc in which it was introduced. And by cliche… well, think of what would cause one in general the most pain. Top of the list are elimination of children (girls over boys), siblings (younger over older), minorities, love interest, animals (top 3 choices are dogs, bunnies, horses) I’m surprised that in tlou they didn’t manage to kill a dog and was hoping it wouldn’t be introduced in the 2nd game… I was wrong The other reason I’m annoyed by it was that it came after the zombie theme had ran its course, I was tired of the zombie trope already and this game did not make it any better. I had also played uncharted and this game didn’t deviate much from that core formula. Gameplay isn’t any better, it’s a basic/ pure 3rd person shooter with a minimalistic/ basic skill tree and crafting system. The gameplay is fractured across exploration, battle arenas, and stealth arena, with little deviation in the pattern and rarely any moments where these components merge together for different occasions. Everything is divided and sectioned out in neat and rigid compact parts. If you think of any other AAA zombie game, that game would outperform this one. It copies mechanics from other games except none of it is as great as what other games offer. The close combat and skill tree is an iteration of Batman Arkham games, crafting is an iteration of dying light and resident evil, so on and so on… none of is particularly great on its own, it just works when you put it all together but not in a way I’d praise it as the next game messiah of the new generation. TLOU 2 had a chance to be better and instead they doubled down on all aspects of the first. What’s left of cliches? Only the biggest one, Killing off one or all of the main characters. This one wouldn’t be too bad if done right but considering they suck at actually making impactful emotion circumstances, it should have been obvious that the scenes that lead up to the death would have been unreasonable or unfounded. I have always and will always continue fight this game’s high praises, I just can’t understand how a company went from making Jak and Daxter to this mediocre, copy and paste, cliche that depends on cheap tricks to elicit an emotional reaction on a list of top average things that majority of people find disturbing. Absolutely 0 replay ability

I honestly would have been fine if TLoU just remained as a one-off title. Maybe a couple of comics to expand upon it and a story DLC, but that's it. The aesthetic was cool, but the story didn't exactly wow me and when I came back to it later after years of playing other games with some mechanical overlap with TLoU, I can say that it just doesn't have the hook I want from a game. Even during the time I had access to my old PS3, I couldn't be bothered to finish it before I left for the next semester. Then again, it was also competing for attention among Raven's Wolfenstein and Little Big Planet 2.

All I know is that I decided to give TLOU a try on PS3 in 2020. I was enthralled by the intro but was very pissed off when they skipped ahead a few years after the death of his daughter. I wanted to continue playing from when she died. Instead they turned the whole opening of the game into a flashback that presents the game as something it isn't. When you finally get control it's just go to this location kill this person. It's like if the CW did the Walking Dead.

I tried playing it recently and I am so bored. Maybe the story is "great" for a game - but frankly I hate modern games over emphasis on story. I am old school (pushing 40), so I remember when game stories were "get rings, hit Dr. Robotnik", and I've always been a "skip cutscenes" guy. My God is this game aggravating. It's just soooo slow, and soooo boring. An hour in and you've been shot at, what? Once? The idea of open worlding through zombie infested Boston, Pittsburg, and Seattle sounds awesome, and yet that's not really what this is. The game it reminds me most of is actually Dragon's Lair, this old arcade game that was basically an interactive movie where you had to memorize the right moves to choose your own adventure your way until the end. I want to push back on it being a great story. The show has mixed reviews, and there is a reason for that. What can be said about The Last of Us game is that it tells a very *cohesive* story and does a great job world-building. However you see this come apart in the show because it order to pad the runtime and add enough additional story to warrant a cinematic version, you realize the story doesn't offer enough avenues for true story-telling. We're treated to an inconsistent world where you have areas like the Commune and Bill's small town that exist in a more Hollywood-ized apocalypse, as opposed to the deadly serious one from the game itself. It's funny that people claim the second one sucks. I actually find that one a bit more entertaining from a gameplay standpoint. Either way they are far too slow for me, especially in a world where Left 4 Dead exists.

Ellie is supposedly known as the one video game child character that wasn’t annoying, which only shows that the die hard fans of this game have never expanded their horizons. There is a game called Tales of Berseria and it has one child character named Laphicet, he is a far better character than Ellie ever could be. Laphicet acts as a support character in the party both in terms of combat and emotional reassurance to raise the party’s morale in the story. Of course it isn’t as realistic as The Last of Us, however I would argue that games suffer from being too realistic at times. And not to mention Laphicet’s character is still believable because the writing for him is done so well. I won’t spoil anything major or minor because I want people to experience Tales of Berseria for themselves. But one thing I will say is this, the game tells a far better revenge story than The Last of Us sequel ever could.

I myself am very strict on the series. I don't like it. I am not saying it is a bad game. Or at least the first one isn't. But the problem is the gameplay to me. It seems extremely dull and boring. The core loop is.. extremely basic. Go there. Do this. Watch cutscene. Rince and repeat. Is the story great (first one again)? Absolutely. But that is the problem as well. The game purely relies on a good story. Not a really deep gameplay loop or at least a gameplay loop that adds replay ability. THAT is what i don't like about the game. It's boring as hell. Now if people are happy with that. Playing a game once and know the story then? Fine. But that does NOT make it a masterpiece either. No. Good gameplay loop. Replay ability. THOSE are the things that make a game a masterpiece for me. If you need an example that is seen as a worse game but to me is miles and miles ahead in terms of gameplay and fun? State of Decay 1/2. Addicting gameplay loop. Great mechanics. Shit ton of depth. Sure the story "lacks" (Never tried to be super with the first basic game, the DLC kinda fixed that though), but if that game would rely solely on the story again, i would be bored quickly. Since i know the story in and out then and got nothing new to discover. I NEVER measure a good game on the most basic bitches opinions like "graphics" or other super basic shit people bitch and moan about all the time. If the gameplay is addicting and provides tons of hours of fun? All i need. 10/10 game for me. GOTY.

Your first point is one of the reasons why don’t like the current state of modern western games. To many games nowadays sacrifice actually being a game for the sake of immersion and realism. There are some of the exceptions to this like the current Spider-Man games and God of War, but even then those games tend to slow themselves down and it really bugs me. I love Red Dead Redemption 2 but the beginning of the game was an absolute chore to get through and could have been handled in a less meandering way. This leads to my next issue that a lot of these modern western games feel like their trying way too hard to be wannabe AMC/HBO shows than actually video games (ironic since TloU ended becoming an acclaimed TV show). It’s gotten to the point for me where most games I play nowadays are either Japanese games or indie games on Steam. You can call me crazy all you want but I would rather replay Pizza Tower 60 times over than The Last of Us (or “The Snooze of Us” as I like to call it).

This is said of absolutely everything that gets super praised. I try to avoid saying anything is over-rated unless we're talking about the consensus opinion noticeably falling over time, such as Forest Gump was over-rated when it was released as we don't praise that film nearly as much as we once did. I've never been a huge fan of The Last Of Us as it's just the standard zombie tropes with an admittedly cool and novel premise... but I seem to be in the minority about zombies, as so many people can't get enough of them while I usually drop out after enjoying the first installment of new franchises. 28 Days Later was genuinely exciting and new... 28 Weeks Later, not so much, although the opening scene is a masterpiece. Anywho, I've not seen a significant downward critical reappraisal of The Last Of Us since its release. Usually just the assorted Over-Rated video essays by people who still like it... which I tend to expect after the first sequel dulls the shine.

But it wasn't, just very hollow, superficial, nonsensical virtue signalling. They whitewashed Abby's dad literally. He was black in TLOU1 and they made him white. The hypocrisy for a 'brave' story to not just bravely make Abby's character also black is very telling. It is what it is, I guess.
@jak3y39 ай бұрын
I don’t think that’s true. Abby’s dad looked a little darker in the first game, sure, but that could also be due to the lighting. He looks completely different in Part 2 for sure, but I wouldn’t say he’s whitewashed.

I mostly agree with the opinion in this video, however, there are some things here I actually don't necessarily agree: 1 "PS4 remaster was unnecessary": I don't 100% agree. While I agree that the game looked amazing on PlayStation 3, there was no way to play native PS3 games on PS4, so even if it was just for money, a Remaster was the better option. However, I would have liked that Sony would have done the same to other 1st party games of PS3 from 2013, especially God of War Ascension and Gran Turismo 6. 'Part 1' however, it was completely unnecessary. 2_ "The Last of Us 2 is a bad game": eh, not that much. In terms of Gameplay and ways to tackle the encounters the game was somewhat better. Not to mention it is a masterpiece from a technical level on PlayStation 4. But I repeat, masterpiece at the TECHNICAL stuff. The narrative is pretentious garbage. And that's the thing. The Last of Us it's actually a great game. But it's just a watered down Uncharted game. That it's ok by itself, but it's no better in terms of GAME than literally anything we had before.

I played it. Gaming is the worst medium to have a good story in. Was TLOU good? Definitely. But it's story gets squashed by a lot of media from the TV and movie industry. Also, the gameplay is inferior to many games as well. It's still decently fun and has good graphics though. Couldn't see myself paying for and playing TLOU2 considering it's 20 hours long.

I just recently picked up The Last Of Us Part 1 along with The Last Of Us Part 2 As a person who has never touched this franchise. I am wondering the same thing what is so good about this? From what I have played it feels like a very slow paced stealth game
@duncandonuts5268Ай бұрын
i think a lot of people who get all upset at those who don't like part 2 never seem to understand why. i think generally those of us that don't like it do appreciate a lot about it and the balls it had. a lot of the ideas are very good and the general message it was trying to send wasn't bad, but the execution just wasn't good and was such a downgrade from the first game. that's the issue. you can love the game as much as you want and i would understand why, but the fact that half the people who played the game didn't like it is an undeniable sign that there was a very clear disconnect and problem with the way they went about making it, no matter how much you appreciate it.

Days Gone is phenomenal and much better than the last of us could ever be. And much better than that crappy bullshit horizon. Zero interest.! But they get sequels, DLC spin offs, VR games, remakes and remasters yet Days Gone can’t get a dlc or sequel? It’s fucking bullshit! All because ign trashed Days Gone because and I quote they do not like the fact that you play as a scruffy straight white male with a gun! Spider-Man two is mid AF btw
@zilverman78204 ай бұрын
Yeah days gone is great. My only problem with that game is its too long and when I reach the military camp I'm getting bored and feel like the missions are becoming tedious to do. But the cliffhanger at the end is so good. The last of us is good but the platforming and exploration gameplay becomes too much to do and boring. The combat is not that good either. Last of us is more like a chill and play slowly type of game. I wish sony lessens their cinematic approach to games because it takes away the immersion.

Never had a console so never played it, until recently when it came to PC, the game is bad, but the story is great. Here's why, i'm a masochist who only plays things on the hardest difficulty so i started TLoU on the hardest. The gameplay is simply not fun or rewarding, the combat is janky and does not reward skill, enemies don't drop ammo even though you kill them before they get to use any of it, but at least there are arrows! those are a re-usable, silent, skill based weapon right? wrong, the arrows break 99% of the time when you get a kill with them. I get what the game is trying to do, "ammo is hard to find so use it sparingly etc etc", but when you do use it sparingly and skillfully and plan for the future you get nothing in return. Outside of combat its just "move this ladder, move this plank, mash this button to open this door". It's kind of...terrible.

I will keep saying this again and again - videos with point like this are why I'm endlessly happy that creators do not cater to lowest common denominator, the average media consumer. I genuinely cannot believe people wanted ANOTHER game of the same Joel plus Ellie. Disney era has really made people completely unable to take anything other than the most basic and surface-level story-telling with nothing but happy endings and the most predictable turns of events, as soon as something daring comes out, it's all tears. Also saying Far Cry 3 had good stealth completely invalidates your whole video tbh, my god was it one of the worst stealth systems in the entire history of game design, objectively. Literature, music, art as a whole has always bashed your head with idea that divisive opinions on it is literally the best possible outcome for any form of Art, it means it was done right, Art that asks many questions and leaves you no answers, with no definitive ending will always be the absolute best, because no matter how hard you, as a creator, try to answer them all - the answers will always be unsatisfactory, this was confirmed by the best writers of all time, they have always written ambiguous literature, Gravity's Rainbow is a perfect example. I honestly don't even have a slightest idea on the point of this video, you even say it yourself. Saying "please don't crucify me for having a different opinion" and "this will be defended"? This has been overdone to death, what's the point anymore? Everybody knows that already, not a single adequate human being will bat an eye on these opinions, unless they are completely wrong of course. Why don't people just like what they like and hate what they hate, this is literally posing for no apparent reason. Last thing I wanna say is how absolutely wild your perception is - when somebody defends a piece of Art it's scary and stupid and horrible, but when people trash talk Part 2 or even Part 1 and they do it the same way, it's warranted and "please don't crucify me", like what
@jak3y3 Жыл бұрын
I never said Far Cry 3 had good stealth, my point was that you could prone in grass and use silencers way before Part 2 came out and people want to pretend like it’s revolutionary design. And I never said people defending something was horrible, it’s the lenghts they will go to to defend something they love, hence why I said they’re the Swifties of the gaming community.
@rufukyduky Жыл бұрын
@@jak3y3 but it's the exact same but the other way around. There are around 40k negative "reviews" before the game even came out or minutes/hours after the game came out, these are 2 extremes and piling up on just one of them, the one defending the game is disingenuous, why didn't you talk about the other side for half of your video? The absolute vile shit people spew to ride on a hate train. If anything, people hating on this game's guts is a lot more prevalent and a lot more contrasting: people sending death threats to actors/creators, using bots to review bomb, and even the simplest shit like saying how this game only has one message of "vengeance is bad" when in reality it wasn't brought up a single time throughout the entire game, there wasn't a single episode of "vengeance bad" and yet this is people's main gripe, how they are being spoon-fed this "message". You know what is genuinely scary? Not how people defend this game, it's how ready people are to convince THEMSELVES of something that isn't even there, just to hate on something, THIS is scary. I just think there's a lot more to it than you make it out to be in your video. There are 2 extremes and you only focus on one.
@jak3y3 Жыл бұрын
@@rufukyduky I didn’t feel like it was necessary to bring up because the heat for the game died down and it has died down for a while, meaning if anyone is still hating on it when they’ve made content on it in the past, they’d be beating a dead horse. That being said, I would be surprised if voice actors and anyone over at Naughty Dog was atill getting death threats or anything over the game. I’m talking about the cutrent state of The Last of Us fanbase, not the fanbase from 3 years ago. If I was, I definitely would have brought it up.

Oh yes I agree 100% with the sentiment that not acknowledging flaws is a problem. *I.M.O.* Part 2 is nowhere near as good as it should be considering all it’s magnificent components(it’s an amazing sandwich with roten lettuce and spoiled mayonnaise). Part 1 IS a good *game* because of it’s interactive nature lends to more intense emotions than a show or movie. I actually really like the gameplay of both games.

Imo, Part 2 would of been good if joel had a adopted son in the first game that he raised alongside ellie. He could of been the one to finish what ellie started in the 2nd game and been there to keep ellie in check instead of just letting her roam free since she has a kid anyway
