One reason is probably to make Part 1 and Part 2 more similar, both graphically and in terms of gameplay. If you play both games one after the other, you have more of a feeling of playing one game. It has more continuity. I think the fact that they called the second game "The Last of Us - Part 2" instead of just "The Last of Us 2" indicates to me that they probably planned early on to do this remake.

I definitely love the stylized versions of all the characters in the original, I don’t see many people talk about how Joel’s face changed quite a bit, I miss the shape of his eyes from the original, they were very unique and he really stood out, but his remake face is very basic Dad face, he still looks fantastic just less stylized. I like both versions for different reasons. I have a niece that is close to Ellie’s age and Ellie looks very appropriate for her age in the remake. I don’t think they look “older” I think the style shift is just jarring for people and the difference in the faces make peoples brain think they’re older looking, but they’re really not. Ellie does look like a 14 year old.

He killed the fun in uncharted 4 by reducing the action because "nate looks like a psychopath he kills to many and just jokes" yeah well there were 3 games already if you want to take that fact seriously he's well beyond redemption he's killed thousands they might as well of rebbled in that flaw. "Killing Joel infact was an awesome idea like in the first five minutes and it shows I have balls to kill the protagonist so that makes me a good writer. My personal theory on why this is coming out is that they are calling it a remake instead a remaster because they’re going to add Abby. I feel they’re going to try and add some Abby segments to better tie it in with “part 2”. A huge complaint about 2 was that everyone hates Abby and her friends so they’ll try and amend that by adding them into “part 1”. I hope this doesn’t happen but that’s just what I think will.

Neil said that they had the story for part 2 already laid out when they wrapped up the first game but it’s so painfully obvious that he lied. If they actually had part 2 planned then the head doctor wouldn’t have switched race between games and Abby would’ve been mentioned (maybe very subtly, as part of a note you find or something). I love Abby but Joel and Ellie’s story should’ve ended with the first game. Abby’s story should’ve been completely separate. If they add her to part 1 it’ll be better for continuity but my goodness I’m going to be upset.

Personally I prefer the art style of the remaster compared to this new one. Its probably just me, but I can tell immediately which is which, mostly because the new one looks way too smooth. The clothes look smooth, like theres no texture on there at all (2:28). The original had these textures and subtle griminess to it, along with this really nice lighting affect on the characters in cutscenes, which you can see in 5:51. Giving it a really interesting look and feel. They seem to also take out some interesting camera angles (again 5:51 5:31 for examples) Though they did improve on the 5:41 shot, that looks gorgeous. Hopefully the gameplay is really fun compared to the original, but I don't think its worth its price tag for a remake

The main problem I have is that the remake being beat-for-beat the original with next to nothing changing, is that that's simultaneously the best part and the worst part of the whole release. A PS5 can already run The Last of Us Remastered, but like you said, people would buy it anyway. In this economy, the households/people who don't already afford a PS5 can just buy the first two games to play on PS4. This studio at Sony could've just as easily done an Uncharted reboot, or remaster, instead. Drake's Fortune came out 2007 IIRC.

Given that a perfectly decent remaster is free to everyone who owns a PS5 (this remake being a PS5 exclusive before going to PC), I can't imagine they won't change things like that. I think it's already confirmed that they're bringing in the upgraded enemy AI from part 2, as well as some of the gameplay advancements, and that's only necessary if they open up and expand the environments as well to take advantage of these updates. That apparently being the case, I am actually interested in experiencing that.

And they added the new and better A.I., totally new models for literally everything in the game, better ambiance, intractable environments and obviously extremely better graphics that set the mood better. They should’ve chosen Bloodborne, it would look beautiful especially with the original art direction and style. It even got the 30 fps cap originally, and there are just some areas that need a lot of touching up on (Like Beast Paarl’s arena) That would be my true dream remake, especially if it got the Demon Souls treatment because Fromsoft games aren’t graphically advanced in the first place while Naughty Dog always makes their games look beautiful

I could see if the game was lengthened along with added or changed cutscenes while keeping the overall theme and story along with updated game play but this doesn't feel worth it yet. Lastly for Capcom to skip a remake for a main entry title in resident evil is a tragedy to me.

I would love to see an actual remake of RE1 before they move on to RE4. Recycling the GameCube release from the early 2000's was nice but not at all the same thing. Games from that generation would benefit a whole lot more from a remake than The Last Of Us will.

I think people who say that the remake and the OG looks the same, needs to get their eyes checked. And the people who think that this was a night and day difference, you too need to get your eyes check. This remake makes the line between remake and remaster a lot more blurry. Look at every other remake that has been made and look at their drastic difference. RE 2, RE 3 and FF7 remake. That visual jump is insane. They not only give the cutscenes and environments better textures, but completely remade all of them. With this remake, you can see how much stuff they are reusing again. So it makes sense why people think this is just a remaster 2.0, because it really is. Now let's talk about the gameplay. I think it's a no brainer that they will use the exact same gameplay from part 2 and that's fine. But let's not pretend that the jump in the core gameplay from TLOU 1 to TLOU 2 was gigantic. It was not. The level design is bigger and better, the AI is smarter, the guns feel better, the movements feel better and you can now dodge and also jump. These are all great improvements but it is still the exact same core gameplay system from a game that a lot of people find "outdated". The game can still feel very linear, the puzzles are better than the first game but it doesn't mean the puzzles are good, and I'm guessing there will still be a lot of looting segments. I also don't think adding a dodge button for a big guy like Joel would make sense. Maybe a counter button or a block button would be better. So yeah, I think this remake will probably still make TLOU 1 a great or maybe a better game than the OG. But the truth is, this remake lowers the bar for remakes. And I would probably have no problems in buying it, if it isn't $70. They literally just switch engines, design new levels, and copy paste the mechanics they have worked on in TLOU 2. That is not something you sell for $70. That is almost a robbery. But hey, TLOU fans on Twitter are absolute fanatics and will buy anything ND throws at them, so I still hope they're happy. Aside from that, the cutscenes look a whole lot better, and I’m sure the gameplay will have improved significantly. Maybe I’m wrong (we’re both assuming this anyways) but I doubt the gameplay will be exactly copy and paste, they may have taken into account that we’re playing as JOEL not Ellie and Abby, who btw did feel different from one another in Part 2. Plus the fact, they’ve spent two years on this, which is the average time spent on a game nowadays for the most part. Most of that time was probably spent on the environmental changes and gameplay 🤞

Also there is no point changing those lines or the voice actors because they are the best in the business and yes they are using the same motion capture but still the faces look so much better now which will really improve cutscenes because by current standards the cutscenes and the faces while talking looks poor in TLOU. I mean yes TLOU still looks pretty good so it’s not the most needed remake but the difference is still gonna be quite big when you consider all areas and it will be a really good looking and polished PS5 games. The gameplay in TLOU have aged quite badly compared to TLOU part 2 also. Im excited for it personally altough i will probably wait for a price drop.

The problem with these kinds of opinions is that they're typically very unnuanced and based on very little actual insight into game development and the business context in which decisions are made. Let me explain. Imagine, in this instance, Naughty Dog. They just finished TLOU2 and are even working on a TLOU multiplayer title. They can't keep their entire staff busy because their upcoming projects are still in too early a phase. They could, however, put together a team and have them work on a remake while also developing PS5 development skills. This avoids idle hands and allows them to actually ship something at the end of it. TLOU is a very good candidate for this because they can reuse the newest version of their game engine (and improve it at the same time), assets and mo-cap, etc. from TLOU2. You insinuate in this video that ND just started completely from scratch with this remake, and of course they didn't... not at all. Of course I could be talking utter BS here, but that's actually kind of my point. Don't just assume and start condemning left and right. The game development business is complex and there's going to be a lot of things that factor into how these kinds of decisions are being made. You may not like the outcome, but you also don't have to buy anything. At least we're actually getting something. About that price, though... I agree. $70 seems like it's too much. And another thing, the remake does look a lot better. I disagree very much with your example with Joel's shirt looking better in the original. The remake offers much better lighting and it looks natural compared to the original. It doesn't appear as "sharp," but neither would real life.

So a few things, what does the phrase "built from the ground up for PS5" imply to you in the trailer? Also improved graphics and lighting can be improved with mods. Ask any PC gamer. @@ChaosKnuxxx yea honestly to me the only thing that seems different is the lighting and the character models which isn't a very hard thing to do seeing as how they pretty much already have the asset of the model already built all they probably had to do was clean it up abit. Facial animations we're already really good in the original so maybe touch up a few things aswell. Gameplay is gonna be pretty much the same i've seen the argument "but its gonna be improved to match tlou2 gameplay" now i dont know what game people played but the mechanics of tlou2 are pretty much identical to those of the 1st, yes the gameplay feels smoother and there's a jump and dodge button and you can crawl under vehicles etc but the core mechanics are pretty much the same its not as if they complete changed from one game to the next, so in my opinion even that won't justify its existence. Guess we will have to wait and see though.

@@ChaosKnuxxx Rebuilt from the ground up means the game has been retrofitted into a more modern version of the ND game engine reusing many of the assets and subsystems from TLOU2. They did NOT actually build this game from the ground up. That cannot be understated. A game studio needs to bet on smart which projects they choose to commit to. This is a short-term one and might -- from their perspective -- indeed be a very smart one. They need to develop their team for the kinds of projects the studio wants to bet their future on, making sure that they can remain competitive. And they need to actually deliver something that they can sell... and I'm betting this will sell a lot better than any other of their past projects they could choose to remake. I have no clue where you're going with the mods thing. This has nothing to do with mods.

Part II introduced so many mechanical upgrades which makes the gameplay (and combat especially) so much more intuitive and fair to the player. I can list off all the problems I have with the first game's combat but then this comment would be multiple paragraphs long, so I'll just list one: you ever do a running attack at low health, only for, as soon as your fist or melee weapon makes contact with their face, for your attack animation to be completely cancelled in favor of a player death animation where the enemy slams your face into a wall? It's happened to me way too many times (especially on grounded) and it's bullshit. P.S. about the price, do you think the Demon's Souls remake shouldn't have been at full price? Cause to me it really looks like that is about the level of upgrade we're getting here with The Last of Us Part I. I payed $87 preordering the Digital Deluxe Edition and I just know I won't regret it.

This would have made more sense to make this next generation. Another 8 or so years and the Last of Us part 1 would actually be considered an old game at that point. And there would be enough of a visual upgrade that it might be worth investing the time to rebuild this game from the ground up. But as you said, its way too early and the remastered game still looks great by today's standards. In many ways I actually prefer the visuals from the remastered game on the PS4 which is a clear sign that this didn't need to happen so soon.

@@malekat8539 I never said the remake wasn't graphically better, I agree. I clearly said in many ways I prefer the visuals from the remastered game on PS4 and I do. They are not the same thing. That being said, a remake is best when it takes an old game and recreates it for the modern era breathing new life into the game and giving it several modern upgrades that add quality of life improvements to the overall experience. This game is less than 10 years old and already it has a remastered game and also getting the remake treatment. If you're excited about this then more power to you, but I think most would agree this would have been more impactful had they waited till the game was old enough to have a more significant upgrade when pulling the remake trick either on the PS6 or PS7. At that point the game would actually be old and the improved visuals would have blown the remake out of the water rather than just being a noticeable upgrade.

@@malekat8539 Yes, the original is 9 years old releasing on June 14 2013, and was one of the last big AAA experiences on the PS3. The remastered game was released just a year later on July 29, 2014 for the PS4. This means The Last Of Us Part 1 will hilariously be released for a third time within the same decade. As one who bought it on the PS3 and the PS4 and played though it twice now as a result, I'm still understandably fatigued by this game currently. Even though the newer game is coming to PC, this is a hard pass for me personally as the experience still feels somewhat fresh for the time being. I might pick this up on a Steam sale in about 4 years when I feel enough time has passed and would like to play it again. But for now I'm just laughing at how many times they can revamp this fairly new game for every modern console that releases.

Eh, I agree that this isn't really necessary when anyone with a PS5 has a perfectly decent and playable remaster for free anyway, but I completely disagree. Maybe it's just me, but I can definitely see the difference and the remake is definitely better on a technical, graphical level. From the sound of things, they're not just going to do a carbon copy of the original. They're going to insert the improved enemy AI and at least some of the gameplay changes from part 2, which could suggest that they could be expanding on the environments from the original game to make them less linear. That could actually be cool and worthwhile. I'm honestly not hating on this. While I don't think it's necessary, if it's good, it's good. I'm sure I'll probably pick it up when the price drops (since I haven't and have thus far refused to pick up a single PS5 game for $70). If memory is correct, it seems like this game only exists because they were making TLOU: Factions multiplayer game, so they decided to do a remake of the original since they already had the assets and the extra time and manpower. I'm not gonna bitch and moan, even if it is a bit unnecessary, but they better have made some noteworthy changes if they want me to even consider paying full price for it. Also, hot take, I'm sure, but part 2 doesn't suck. The story isn't as iconic as the original, but I'm kind of in the middle. I think the game is incredibly well made, and I think the story would've been better if it was structured a little differently, but I get and respect why people both love it and don't enjoy it all the same. It definitely deserves some criticisms, especially the studio's response to criticism, but I also think some of the criticism that was made was also ignorant and kinda dumb. I personally chalk a lot of the negative reception up to wrong place, wrong time. Not many people would want to play a really dark and kinda depressing story during a time when psycho rioters were burning their cities down after months of stupid af economic lockdowns. My one outright concern about this remake is that I hope they don't insert Abby into it somewhere. I'd probably be fine with a blink-and-you-miss cameo, but nothing more. I actually didn't hate her character, but she is entirely unnecessary to the original story, and the whole surprise of finding out she was the kid of a Firefly Joel murdered only works because we didn't know she was there prior to that revelation. It would just be unnecessary. I'd much rather get more time with Bill, Tommy and those guys they meet in Pittsburgh, assuming they're expanding on the story at all, that is.

Secondly, the meaning of "unnecesary", from my point of view, is really subjective. If you don't want it or like it, then don't buy it or don't watch it. Of course is gonna be a lot of desagreements regarding the faces, gameplay, graphics, etc. but it's part of the process of liking or disliking a game and that's totally ok. The comparisons made between the pre rendered cutscenes and the remake aren’t too crazy different. It’s a bit of a weird way to show off the game. The part of in game footage there is a huge difference. But it’s still pretty pointless. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say the last of us is unplayable from its graphics or performance. The remake will have all cutscenes in real time, so I guess the clothing you out of the character will be shown in the cutscenes now, and the gameplay will look as good as the cutscenes. My biggest issue is the price tag, I mean $70!? Come on, I know it took a lot of effort but, it’s not like they had to get actors or write a script, set design, big parts of developing a new game.

I like to have fun in games,and TLOU,GOW4 and Uncharted have some,but then you’re carrying around people or children for the next 10 minutes and it becomes an interactive movie. RE2MAKE does this but it’s only one area you do this and it’s only 10 to 20 seconds. RE2MAKE never slows you down or takes the game away from you. In fact dialogue can be skipped by running to the next area.

And since that game makes no cuts in camera angle it doesn't relly ruin immersion in my opinion. If you don't like more story-heavy games I certainly don't recommend Horizon Forbidden West to you. It has a great story, but it has pretty long cutscenes. Some are even around 5 minutes long. Totally understandable if that's not your cup of tea, but don't go around saying that such games shouldn't be made.

It’s also quite smart to remake a classic that only came out 9 years ago, rebuild said game from the ground up, keep that team working/occupied while the rest of the company are working on future titles, it keeps the ‘flag flying’ as they say. Considering ND have come out with 3 new titles since Last of Us 1, it can hardly be said that this decision makes them ‘money grabbers’

The Last of Us Part 1 is a game that has realistic graphic yet a people are more exited about Shredder's Revenge which tells you something. Seriously Sony's current management is making some questionable decisions. To add insult to charge 70 dollars are they effing insane.

This is just the fastest, cheapest way to up the sales of part 2 (which sales profit is not meeting their long term expectations AT ALL). this isn't about us, about games, it's about sales, revitalizing the damaged ip, make people "fall in love" with the game again, sell you the game a second time for full price and ultimately up the sales of TLOU part II as the main reason for this whole mess.

Totally agree on an inF 1&2 remake, call me crazy but I actually like inF2 more than the OG TLoU. I would gladly pay $70 for a remake of the inF dualogy in a heartbeat. This TLoU remake objectively will be the best version of the game but its def a wait for sale. The game isnt even a decade old and for me personally the game feels like it came out 5 years ago because thats the first time I played it. I was on a gaming hiatus when it first came out. The OG game just squeezed every ounce of power out of the PS3 and the remaster polished it and upped performance. ND just did such a dam good job with the game that its aged incredibly well and even though the remake looks better the remaster still looks dam good even today.

Negative opinions about Last of Us Part 1 don’t make sense to me. If you don’t want to play it… don’t buy it? If they really remade the game….. HELL YEAH I wanna play it with LOU2 controls!! Being able to go prone and dodge was amazing in Part 2. Not to mention the AI was INCREDIBLE. Naughty Dog has also said they expanded levels so I am assuming more looting/exploration? So while I agree it’s wild they’re remaking a game that came out 9 years ago… I’m so excited about it. LOU2 plays gloriously on the PS5… and if you truly understood the story and aren’t just a cry baby because Joel got bodied and Ellie didn’t follow thru with killing Abby you would be able to recognize that it was an incredible game that got way too much hate (partially because of the leaks). And as far as it being $70…. Welcome to 2022 where a 20 hour video game still costs less than you would spend on a nice dinner date. As much as I love the first game, why anyone would want to spend 80 bucks on a game that you can literally get for free with PlayStation plus just with slightly "worse" graphics is beyond me. The fact that this game has received a remaster and a remake in the span of 10 years just goes to show how hard they’re milking it. Part of me hopes that it will be a commercial flop so that they learn their lesson, but knowing how many last of us super fans exist who will eat up absolutely everything that druckman puts out, that won’t happen.

I have to disagree with the resident evil part of the argument for 2 reasons. - They remade 1, 2, and 3 already before announcing the remake of 4. Capcom doing this isn’t about making money off of the popularity of 4 when they already remade the first 3. They might even remake 5 as well. - And capcom remaking old resident evil games isn’t preventing them from making new resident evil games. I do agree with what you said about the last of us though, we really didn’t need a remake.

The REmake was far more than just a change of models (and the jump from PSX to Gamecube was gigantic), they change the voice acting, added new scenes and scenarios, and more gameplay options and new "modes" (like that one dangerous zombie). So that's a really bad example, the word Remake and Remaster for Sony doesn't mean anything.

Makes sense to me, seems like a great time to do a remake. New console, unifying with the look and feel of TLOU2. It all makes perfect sense and seems like a great way to re-experience the game. If you think they “don’t look that different” you need to get your eyes checked. I got some good news for you! You don’t have to buy it :) you can just play the PS4 version if you wanna replay the game! Seems like people are always really looking for reasons to hate naughty dog, Druckman and TLOU franchise. Sometimes something can just be nice to have, they didn’t have to remake the game, it’s not necessary, but all game remakes are 100% never necessary. But hey, it’s cool to have a version for the new generation of consoles (especially with all the graphical features the ps5 supports)

Well, people don't have to look far to find issue with Neil and Naughty Dog. Their handling of Part 2 as a whole was abysmal. They allegedly time crunched their employees and had them look at Live Leak videos including extreme violence to better emulate the blood and gore of the game. They deceptively marketed the game in regards to its plot and had events and lines that weren't in the game, like Joel asking Ellie "Did you think I'd let you do this on your own?" Where in the actual game it was Jessie in a completely different setting who asked Ellie the same question, because at that point Joel had already been killed. And considering they hired a shell company to copyright claim videos even discussing the fact Part 2 was leaked by a disgruntled employee, not even including what was actually leaked, this goes beyond people not liking a remake and thinking it's unnecessary to expecting far more of an olive branch from Naughty Dog to their once fans. Personally, as they lied to people as to the plot of the first game and Ellie being the only playable character in Part 2, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to fundamentally change cutscenes from the first game and/or add hours of backstory for Jerry and Abby in the remake. If you're excited for this game and willing to pay $70, go for it. Buy $16k in Diablo Immortal loot boxes while you're at it. But I and others have reasons much more nuanced than just looking for ways to hate Neil when we look sideways at this remake.
