Definitely looks to be the definitive version of this game, but full price is a lot to ask for a game that was one of the biggest releases of the last decade - most people who have owned a PlayStation since the PS3 have already played this in some way. Not to mention this is technically missing some content since there is no multiplayer. Very excited to play this eventually but it's a really hard sell for $70.

This will be really fun to replay….when its on sale for like $30. They should have bundled this with their upcoming multiplayer game or made another story content dlc to make this worthy of being full price. Destroy All Humans 2 at least is $40 and thats a bigger leap in graphical and gameplay quality from its original release than Last of Us is to their original

That's true with adding extra story content. They could've had some backstory about how Tess and Joel met or what happened with Joel and his brother to part ways. That would've made existing fans of the series definitely interested in replaying the game.

An upgrade for 30-40 USD for owners of the remaster would have been nice (and I wouldn't hesitate to pay it). I don't deny the effort that went into the remake, but it's not nearly as high as creating a game from scratch. With the remaster too fresh in my mind (bought and played it a week before Last of us Part II was released), waiting for a discount (or a very boring gaming month) seems the sound choice. ... My resistance caved in after watching the full DF video. Here, have my money, Sony. Nevertheless, 79,99€ is objectively a high price tag most aren't willing to pay. On the other hand, most interested customers still don't have a PS5...

Very good point, Toran! Such discounts are well known already and it's sth I was also expecting with this one. A discount for those of us who already own the ps4 remastered version. But as they advertise it as a remake, I guess they managed to quietly get away with charging a fully-extended price for it. Disgusting practices and definitely a terrible time for gaming. I dont have a console or PC readily available to play this or really any other game on, except when I'm staying at friends houses and stuff like that, but I pretty much always watch these reviews because they are so comprehensive and informative while still being interesting and you can really tell that there is effort put into them and that there's a real passion for gaming here but mostly because you really do care about the consumer, so thank you for these and keep it up!

I played thru the PS3 version twice and the PS4 version once. I really enjoyed my first playthrough. By the third playthrough I was getting super annoyed with the stealth. I agree it's a must play if you haven't played it. Not sure about that price tag either. I think $40-50 makes more sense. I'll maybe try it again when it hits PS+ Extra in a year or so. Hopefully the gameplay is much improved.

I replayed the game just before the sequel came out. After watching your review, I feel no desire to play this game again just yet. Sure it may have been “rebuilt from the ground up” and added some new features, but it’s the same game. Spending $70 dollars for a game that’s really just a prettier version that runs better, I can’t justify that when I can grab my ps4 copy and get almost entirely the same experience. Maybe in a couple years when I want to go back and go through the story again and this remake is a fraction of the cost it is now, I’ll pick it up. Till then, I’m good.

It’s hard for me to even look at this as a remake. I played TLOU1 on every difficulty and know the game inside and out, and this is so identical to the point of being redundant. You have these 2022 character models doing their 2013 animations which looks goofy to me. There seems to be very little updates to the gameplay whatsoever. The graphics are slightly better but nearly everything else is the same. So much so that the remaster is perfectly serviceable and $70 for this “remake” is criminal

You make a good point. One could say Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is more of a remake. They used the exact same animations and aside from graphics the game itself is more or less identical, but there’s a lot more quality of life features and bug fixes than I think you could argue this new TLOU part 1 has.

Very much appreciate this review. I did not expect this version to have this level of bugs since all press releases how much work and polish have gone into this version. I played the PS3 version, and the remastered version on PS4, and this one will have to wait for a hefty price drop and some patching, for me to buy it. The gameplay improvements don't seem as big as I hoped for either. So, definitely a wait for deep deep sale for me. I really liked the characters in this and liked the ever so slightly hopeful story of a broken man and a very hurt young woman. Nevertheless, this is not worth the full price they are asking. Especially since Part II made me resent the franchise quite a bit. They don't have to tell the story I want to hear/play, but I don't have to buy the game I like three times. Thank you for the review! I miss the usual podcast format quite a bit, but I appreciate why it might not be the right way to go for you.

I've played the original remastered version on PS4, it is bizarre that they are calling this a remake, while most of the game is same aside from graphics, Mafia DE is a REMAKE, RE2 & 3 is a REMAKE this is just a really good remaster, just like CoD4 or CoD MW2. The only thing that I'm looking for is pc release and even on that I will probably wait for sale, I want to experience it again in high framerate and better aiming with mouse.

Interesting. After watching Digital Foundry's 50 minute analysis, you could be fooled into believing this remake, in its present state, has been polished to perfection. I don't recall them mentioning any issues whatsoever. Whereas ACG has been more balanced, observant and seemingly objective with his findings, mentioning fps drops, low quality textures in places, and a higher bug count.

Will be interesting to see the achievement progress a month from now. I suspect a lot of people who buy this will put a couple of hours in and once sheen of the minor cosmetic upgrades they've made wears off they'll realise they're playing the same game with the same mechanics they've played twice already and drop it. Like when you fondly remember some series that ran for hundreds of episodes so decide to rewatch it, but then stop after 2 episodes when you realise you know everything that's going to happen which robs it of any tension

What’s crazy to me is that this game asks for this price while not including the multiplayer. As good as the story is, I sunk dozens of hours into its amazingly tense and dynamic multiplayer, and would heavily consider the remaster if it included that. Without the multiplayer, this is a pass.

I always find opinions to change all the time. Final Fantasy 7 remake came out and there were so many people mad that it was a brand new game. Completely different. Not just a graphical overhaul. Took an one-hour-peek into the game last night. Is it a great remake and a huge step-up from the remaster? Absolutely! Is it worth the full premium price tag? More than most titles at this price. The best word to describe the experience (and it is one) is INTENSE. More than the improved visuals, I was struck by the combination with the fantastic 3D sound (wide dynamic) and the best use of the DualSense controller's vibrations in a game - not only for the standard stuff like shots and explosions but more subtle stuff like holstering your weapon, doors being closed or banged on and even distance-related vibrations like the rumbling of a heavy diesel truck. I wondered, if I missed all that in the remastered version and just reinstalled it. Nope, memory didn't fail me. In direct comparison, the remastered version feels kinda flat and numb? Hard to describe. To get the most ouf of the remake, it's best to play it when there the least distractions from the real world, after midnight. All-in-all I'd say it's a must-have PS5 title, not necessarily a must-have-now.

Bought this game when it came out for the PS4. Played for a little bit, but put it down. Started about a year later, and had to force my way through some of it. Was a good game, but just felt like it over stayed it's welcome at times, or totally unforgiving at others. I don't see me picking this game up again, but it always takes me back when I see it. However it also makes me remember what happened when I played, and after it was done, it was shelved. Some games do that to me. This was one. Same as the second game. The remake is, of course, the definitive version of TLOU overall, but do you think the amount of emotion you feel is equivalent to the remastered? In the Remaster, there is an enemy character that repeats in two key cutscenes-I believe the Joel drowning in a puddle cutscene and also the one where he pushes Joel over a rail in the university. Did they fix this-as in, are there more character models, and can you dismember them as much as you could in Part 2?

First, absolutely a fantastic game. I have the PS4 Remastered Edition. With that said, i do not and will not pay $70 plus tax for this game. For folks that haven't played it and do not own a copy of the PS4 edition, its probably worth it. I do wish Sony would have thrown peeps that did buy the PS4 Remaster a bone. I get the work involved but for those fans coming back for a second helping of hamburger helper, a price point of 29.99 would have been more reasonable.

I played the original release of TLOU on PS3 and it blew me away. I picked up the remaster on PS4 just to play through it again in higher resolution and because my internet connection was much better and more stable by then. So I could play Factions MP properly, and I REALLY got into factions (even with the pay2win MAXItransactions). One very strange thing I noticed was that there were fewer enemies in the hospital at the end in the remaster than I'd experienced on the PS3 version. I don't know if my PS3 was melting or something, but the last area had indefinitely respawning enemies and it made it terrifying. Took me ages to get through it so when I got to that part in the remaster, I had horded as much as possible. Despite playing it on the hardest mode available, unlike my ps3 playthrough, I just waltzed right through, hardly any enemies and no reinforcements at all comparatively, and was very disappointed. At least Factions kept me entertained to make it worth the repurchase. The PS5 is the first PS I haven't owned this far into it's life as I can't find one that isn't from scalpers for exorbitant prices STILL! Cool, I thought, I'll just get it on PC and buy 3 extra copies for my friends so we can team up for factions and they (non-console owners) can all finally experience the game. Hell, on PC we can probably restore the cut content from Factions (Australian versions were all censored) if they do it again (not that there was even a reason to given our R18+ classification. They just wanted to spend less on classification). Obviously, none of that will be happening now! I'm a pretty tolerant man, but naughty dog have really pissed me off this time🤬 TL;DR NO! Won't purchase and sorry I ever put up with Naughty Dogs shit.

I think a lot of people are missing the fact that when the show comes out, TONS of people who have never played the game before are gonna come looking to play it for the first time. This gives them a jumping on point that is more cohesive with the second game. Those of us who love the first game and played it before the second came out can appreciate it for what it is, but there might be aspects to a new player that haven't aged nearly as well. It might not be worth it to you individually and that's ok. You don't have to buy it.

I feel like most of this $70 price tag is due to the coming PC release because they know it'll sell like crazy on there. If this had the PvP multiplayer it could be worth it. That was one of the most underrated game modes ever to me. Something about the combat of this game just made the PvP so unique and intense.

That multiplayer mode was truly underrated. I played out both sides if the 12 week completion trophies for the platinum, but whilst I started that for the pure intention of getting the platinum, I realised I stumbled upon a hidden gem, and me and 2 other friends played the multiplayer for a good solid 2 years on and off. Never really got old, just sad they didn't continue it for tlou2 or bringing it back for the remake as the same group of friends I played it with were all hyped just to play the online mode again... oh well 💁‍♂️

I played the remaster version ona friend of mines console years ago since i didnt own a ps4 and he told me it was a must play. Got a ps5 about a year ago, and got the remastered version for 20 bucks. With what i saw in this video, yeah... i aint spending another 70 for something that only looks a little better. Good graphics are always good, but gameplay and story reigns supreme and its the same, if not worse due to the extra bugs you mentioned.

I could see if there was added content, a free dlc and steel case to justify the 70 buck price. Sure you get that with the Firefly edition " which has been sold out " for a whopping 99 .99 price. Its basically a remaster of a remaster for the ps5. I want this but i will wait for at least a 10- 20 dollar discount off the day 1 launch. Im fighting it🤣

The game really appears to be a remaster of the remaster more than an actual remake. I think it's nice to get updates to older games like we do with movies, but I can't help but feel a bit upset that they squandered this golden opportunity to add TLOU2's gameplay here. I have the remaster. I've tried three times to get into it. But stealth games just aren't my thing. This new one with many adjustable AI options sounds like it's the one I should have purchased. But I'm not going to spend $70 on the same game again. They're milking it because of the upcoming HBO show. Easily the definitive version of the game, the graphical upgrade heightens the emotion of ever major beat (David's slaughter was particularly more brutal), and all the new accessibility options along with the unlockable cheats open up so much more fun to be had once you're through on pure runs. Definitely perfected violence in video games, amazingly realized carnage. I remember a man peaking over a box just as I'd swung over with a shotty and went Copperfield on his head. Or tossing a bomb behind a crowd of enemies and watching the rain of body parts. Brutal. Though I can understand people being upset with the full price tag, I do think newcomers won't feel that slight negative. Though, admittedly, I myself am waiting until it drops down to at least $40, as many times as I've beaten TLoU, I can wait for my next playthrough. And without all the multiplayer BS, I'll definitely be platinuming this one.

Played through the Remastered PS4 version once, and I honestly don't get why some people play this game multiple times. The story is good, but its a 'One and done' game. Its an above average zombie shooter anchored by solid characters and good story telling. You could watch the 'movie' version on KZbin and be satisfied. Even on a steep, steep sale, I don't feel its necessary to buy or play again.

Sony wouldn’t have made it if they didn’t know it was going to make money. They are catering to the newcomers that will inevitably come after the HBO show (as well as the accessibility options bringing in players who couldn’t play previously). 70 dollars is steep, but there are tons of people new to the PlayStation ecosystem or will be after the series premiere that will keep this making money.

That being said I do indeed think they will benefit from new players being drawn towards the game especially with the show on the way. I'm not against people buying this remake but I do really hope as well this isn't going to become a new industry standard for the years to come. I'm willing to give this a pass because it's tlou but other games really don't need a remake if they already have a remaster that's even playable on the same console. Remakes as a whole need to be toned down to games which could really use one instead of just playing it safe by reusing a popular game with a new coat of paint because of course that will sell well.

The gameplay is largely exactly the same. If gameplay enhancements where the main selling point of the Last of Us Part 1, Naughty Dog would have shown of gameplay from the get go. This “remake” is essentially a graphical upgrade with accessibility improvements. I pointed out how implementing game mechanics from The Last of Us Part 2 into the original would require redesign and enlargement of levels. Seems I was right. If you own the remaster of The Last of Us. I don’t think this “remake” is worth full price [$90 CAD for me]. Great review as always, ACG.

maybe my mind would change of I were to play through Part 1 myself, but, although the graphics did indeed get a MASSIVE improvement, I just can't get used to the new faces. Bill is the only one where I feel the fidelity increase makes him look better and somehow still the same. as for the others... I still consider TLOU 1 as one of the greatest experiences in gaming I've ever had, but much of that is due to the characters and how their relationship develops as the plot progresses. and my attachment to those characters is to their entire package including how they look, old PS3 jank and all. this is partially why I couldn't get as attached to the remodeled Joel and Ellie and Tommy in Part 2 as I did in the first game, and why I don't feel any attachment to their remodeled Part 1 versions

What about companions AI? Originally their behavior in combat was more often than not immersion breaking; Moving from cover right in front of enemies, or coming to the same cover point just to have your character models overlap.

I didnt play the Last of us untill the last remaster and I loved the story and was what drove me through the game. I don't really care to replay it again as I had such a great time with I don't want to be constantly looking out for the little differences or improvements or things I may feel they could have done better. No Doubt I will play it one day when it's cheap or on PS Plus and i've got space I wont be using...
