Samantha Clyde I was so excited at the thought of it being The Last Of Us 2 and that's honestly what my mind went to the moment I saw the trees. However I really didn't think Naughty Dog would reveal it this soon after U4 and I also thought it'd be saved for E3. She doesn't even look at him in the eye when he comes in, and they never show his face. This is all speculation, no one's saying that it's fact. However I would be glad to have Joel back either way.

This is my interpretation of the trailer: Ellie has learned what happened in reality at the end of the Last Of Us 1, and want revenge for almost dying from the Firefly group. She decided to go to to a firefly camp to kill everyone. After she was done, she saw a guitar and started playing it. Joel is older now, and slowly got his way there to persuade Ellie to not turn into a mass murderer.

what if the game just plays like if Joel is alive but in fact his has died And she has made this Joel in her head as her conscious and is the reason she is seeking to kill all the firefly's. but the game leads you to believe his alive until the end where it reveals that his dead and we get to play as Joel in the reveal of how he died not only learning why and when he died but experience the pain and suffering that drove Ellie crazy for she has lost the only one who ever stayed by her side. just my mind running wild with idea's.
