I loved this episode. So often in movies people are getting shot left and right and there's never any consideration given to the person being killed, but when you listen to WWII vets who describe what war was like, most of them say it was like this. Killing other kids who are scared and want to go home just like you. It's not some evil, empty shell like it's so often portrayed and it's something that sits on your soul for the rest of your life. This episode did a phenomenal job at portraying that.

Bryan crying to his mother is so poignant when you realize, he was either young enough to have seen the world pre-infected(if he's mid 20s) or he was born right at the beginning. when things were quite uncertain. His mother was always there when things were scary as a child. His mother is might be dead or not, but it doesn't matter. God can't do anything for him, but maybe mom can.

When Joel said to Ellie, twice, "they're not going to hit you," I heard that less as reassurance to Ellie and more as a promise to himself that he wouldn't fail this time to protect the one in his care.

Your idea that they were going through KC to avoid Chicago makes a very interesting point. From Boston, the most direct highway route to Cody would be to follow I-90 all the way out to Wyoming, then exit onto local Route 14. But in the first episode, Joel's looking at a map and tracing the route I-90 takes west, but stops as soon as it reaches Chicago. Also, Ellie says here that they're taking "76 West, and then 70 West", which would mean they're giving Pittsburgh and Cleveland a wide berth too. It's quite possible Joel knows something...unfortunate about those cities and wants nothing to do with them.

I can understand your point of view, but I would have to disagree with you on one part. The game actually takes place in Pittsburgh in one of the chapters. Pittsburgh isn’t very far from Cleveland, and I should know because I’m from the Pittsburgh area. In the game, Joel didn’t know that there were hunters or cannibals in Pittsburgh but it was an area they had to go through to go West. You can get to Cleveland by taking 376W to 79N and then to other ways. I know of myself. Lol In the show, they had to change the location of where the Pittsburgh level would’ve taken place to Kansas City because there were no bridges in Canada where they were filming. If there were, I think they would’ve went in a different direction. So that’s probably the reason for that change in the show.

I might speculate that one reason why Joel chose a more "hunting" target weapon might be because in the situation they are (two people traversing the country carrying relative little) carrying weapons is more for personal protection, he is not planning to look for fights but to actually avoid them. Their safety rely on being invisible. Does it really makes sense to have tons of ammo and weapons if you are ALONE with the objective of NOT getting your vip killed?

KC has a massive underground cave system (55 million sq ft I think). My guess is the thing (or things) underground has been growing for 20 years and they're just now ready to emerge! Also, with Bryan, Tess mentioned in episode 1 that kids born after the outbreak don't know how to argue, just fight. fun fact: that actor at 16:55 that is with the leader, he is the one that played Tommy (Joel's brother) in the game. Also that point at the end, about the gas, it makes a lot of sense. Through the story up to this point we know that places have electricity (like the QZ for example), we know that the military (FEDRA) has factories across the country (Joel and that guard on ep.1 are talking about one in Atlanta that makes bullet and pills, for example, and people use ration cards, so obviously they produce food). So it wouldnt be unrealistic, that it this world, FEDRA managed to keep control of some oil production facilities (since the US does have plenty). But it would also be possible that they keep that oil for militaty use only and people outside the QZ still have to use whatever they can find.

Answering to your question "what did we miss?" I love how there's small details that u can put together to understand better what is going on, (maybe more clear to us gamers, I don't know) but Kathleen said to the doctor in the cell when interrogating him about if he talked about her dead brother, the doctor said "I didn't say anything about your brother" and she answered "but Henry did". So we get here that she's looking for Henry. Then when she checks the space in the "attic" she finds the drawing where there's two boys who looks like super horoes drawn on it and she talks about Henry and Sam and how Henry wont let Sam starve bc she notices theyre out of food. Then when Ellie wakes up Joel in the last minute of the episode we see the older one of them pointing a gun at Ellie and we see the younger boy, with a drawn/painted super hero eyemask (English isn't my native language so I'm not sure eyemask is the right word here, but you know, he had red paint around his eyes like the superheroes did in the drawings) pointing the gun at Joel. Its so easy for us gamers to KNOW who they are, and I thought these little details (even tho hard to spot) were so well made so that we can point them out to each other. Also, I love how Joel is opening up to Ellie but it's also a little heartbreaking that right when he does and they laugh about her joke he falls asleep and feels comfortable enough to sleep on his "bad" side regarding to his hearing, and BAM they're in danger immediately. We don't know if the two boys walked over the glass or if they entered the room in another way, but it's a neat way to show us how opening up and getting comfortable also means trouble might find you easier. Loved your reactions as always! Until next week, take care.

But all the more reason to take a bit of food, or ammo, or another small gun. To break whatever they could so the 'enemy' wouldn't have more firearms to chase them with. HBO has podcast after each episode with people from the behind the scenes of the show. They mentioned that the crater had something underground trying to break through, not rhe cordyceps. I think it's one of the creatures we haven't met yet. Remember Bill told Frank that he had only been with a woman, which I think is the reason so many people (myself included) thought he was just lonely and desperate for human contact. But that was a good catch noticing the magazine, which was confirming he was gay...

In the podcast. they said they want to keep everyone in their toes and not knowing exactly what's coming. Their main focus is keeping the main story beats while the smaller details can be changed

I really like this one because I’ve been waiting for Joel to break just a little bit! I like that they are finally talking some more to each other, and having a relationship. that feels like a natural progression from what happened in the third episode and it makes it way more exciting for where it’s going now. I didn’t feel the emotional stakes when Tess died because at that point we didn’t know how long they had been together and also Joel was so cold. but now, as we see these other two characters get closer, the emotional stakes will be there which is necessary for this to be a great story.

I love those little details like about the gas, about his hearing with all the shooting that he's done. I think they really took notes from the things that were brought up with The walking Dead. Especially the overgrowth of plants and other little details like that, which people complained about was so unrealistic when it came to the walking Dead

Great reaction! Bolt actions (especially in Joel's situation) are WAY more reliable, accurate and lighter. They are also easy to maintain and clean, all things you would want in a rifle your hauling halfway across the country in less than ideal conditons. Plus the slower rate of fire helps enforce conservation of ammunition which he is in very short supply of.

It sounds like Kathleen thinks Henry had something to do with her brother being killed. It's vengeance that is driving her. Even to the point of not wanting to let her people know about the threat under the pavement until she gets Henry. She mentions Henry & Sam and the attic hideout didn't look like adults had been there (cans all over the floor) ...so I'm thinking she's after the two kids at the end of the episode.

Same as you guys, I enjoyed ep 4 and the growing relationship between Ellie snd Joel. It’s interesting they jumped right past Pittsburgh to KansasCity. In the game, I this ep was in Pittsburgh. Not sure there was any other stops on the way to Wyoming. It does put them closer to Wyoming. They do seem to be following an I-70 route westward. I did hear ep 5 is dropping Friday night due the Super Bowl Sunday. Keep on reviewing. Enjoying your reviews.

Very good episode. Yes just look at Chernobyl after people left. It has decayed and nature has taken over. Very eerie place now you can even see how people just dropped everything and ran out! I think there are Cordybies! underneath that floor!! I think they are going to burst through soon!! I am liking how Joe's defenses are breaking down especially since Ellis sometimes reminds him of his daughter. I see his point after all the losses he had he is just built up a wall around him.

You may want to go back and watch this episode again, even just the Melanie Lynsky scenes. She clearly states that she’s after Henry because she thinks, whether true or not, that he ratted on her brother and got him killed. I don’t think there’s any kind of marital connection between them.

Idk if that would answer the "20 years later, there must be a semblance of civilization where they rebuilt and started farming and stuff again" but in the first episode in the scene with Joel and the soldier, where gives him the pills, they did mention that the Atlanta QZ has a factory for pills and bullets, so there's probably other factories in other QZ's

Great reaction I love this episode. Regarding your firearm criticism. There's multiple answers, 1 joel packed all the weaponry they had in the truck. Or 2 just like the reason before when he stashed the gun because you didn't have any ammunition left. Because it's less valuable as an empty firearm. That may lead into another explanation, in a world like this you definitely do not want to be caught with too many valuables you can't easily take with you. Especially when their biggest threat uses sound, the use of a firearm seems to be the last resort. Also Joel maybe keeping that weaponry at bills for when he returns with Tommy? Idk. Don't worry I didn't spoil anything. I am playing the video game and watching the show simultaneously.

I think Joel keeps the bolt action for several reasons. One, it's what he's been using most and is most comfortable with. Two, for the same reason he has the revolver. Fewer parts, they don't jam, easy maintenance. Three traveling. Yes, they have the truck when leaving Bill's, but Joel knows the chances of keeping it. You want to be able to travel light with just your pack. He'd rather use that pack space for more ammo for the weapons he has, than different weapons with less ammo. And also other supplies like food. I've driven from NY to CO and back probably close to 100 times. I almost always take 70. It's faster and there are fewer, and smaller cities. Also, it is much straighter, flatter and wide open. You can see what is coming for miles.

I love how you guys always say "COMEON!" when they go to credits, 😆 I feel you, I'm always stunned when it's over because it's just so damn riveting! In the game, this takes place in Pittsburgh, but they changed it to Kansas City. I think they did that cuz KC straddles 2 states, Ellie was looking at a state map, not a city map, Joel told her to use the inset, but it caused them to get lost in the city and they missed the next exit. Did you notice the Sara Lee bread truck? Two blows in one, too soon, Last of Us!🤣🤣🤣
@heyylittleworld2314
@heyylittleworld2314 Жыл бұрын
I'm guessing they didn't give Joel many weapons or ammo in the show because that's how it is in the game. In the game you're given very limited supplies and ammo, you have to be clever about how many bullets you waste on people, and often must choose to knife them instead to save your ammo. Also, in the game, Bill is still alive and so Joel doesn't have the opportunity to take any of his things. So in these sections of the game you have limited ammo and it makes the story go a certain way. So maybe they're trying to ensure the scenarios and circumstances in the show are similar to the game.
