Fascinating video. I came here because I am battling imbalances, pain and aging. I am hypermobile so there are injuries and surgeries I've been through. Lot's of pain at a young age. I can really resonate with the idea that my brain, jaw and vision as well as my experiences shape the way my body positions itself and the way tension creates something in me resembling the problems I'm having. All that said I've been articulating something over and over while trying to learn a new skill. Electric unicycle riding. As I learn to balance myself on one wheel at speed I notice that I can smoothly and gracefully lean into the turn and turn my body to facilitate that turn. When I turn left that is how it feels: Graceful, easy, safe. But when I turn to the right all of a sudden my neck won't turn my head so I start to falter. I shimmy to avoid losing my balance and falling. It's the weirdest sensation. I wonder if I understand what you explained in this video. I wonder why I my head and neck don't want to follow my shoulders. I'm going to have to watch this video again and maybe a few more. This is the most interesting thing I've heard today. Thank you.

@@NealHallinan Your videos have helped me tremendously over the last 5 years dealing with debilitating chronic pain after a shoulder surgery. However, I had to tailor the breathing exercises I did to my own body because strictly adhering to PRI principles didn’t lead to much progress. Additionally, a lot of people don’t have the time or money to take PRI courses. I think this attitude from your comment is not helpful and seems to be pervasive in the PRI community. You got it all right and hardly anyone else is capable of understanding? If you came from a place of less ego and more humility maybe more people would be willing to delve into PRI concepts. The fact you would not even be willing to have a discussion with other individuals with differing perspectives says more about you than them. When you act like you are a genius and got it all figured out, it’s a turn off. This is actually the main problem I have with the PRI model. All this PRI information should be available for free and not hidden behind a paywall. If PRI was so infallible, why would you hide a lot of the information behind a paywall or say in order to get better “you have to go see a PRI practitioner in person.” You still end up paying them money with no guarantee they will help you. If one truly cared about getting people out of chronic pain, and was so confident in their model, wouldn’t you want as many people as possible to have access to the information at little to no cost? People off themselves due to chronic pain and PRI seems to be making a business model out of it. You should empower the average person to figure things out on their own instead of having to rely on other PRI practitioners to fix their problems.

Is there material for left-handed people? Our brains differ structurally from right-handed people and I experience different postural tendencies from personal experience. Our brains are less lateralized, for example. From my experience studying neuroscience, I am guessing that this less-pronounced lateralization contributes to relatively more disorganized dominance patterns which results in cross-dominant tendencies and atypical presentation. I have spent a lot of time boxing in a deep southpaw stance. Any additional information that you could point me toward would be really useful.

Hi Conor. Ive found your info to be extreemly valuable over the last 3 years and has helped me progress the medical side of my care massively as i was getting nowhere before essentially diagnosing myself and pointing out the issues. Anyway i would just like to know if theres anything i can do myself to break out of the pattern im stuck in. I have bilateral equinus, but the right leg is far worse. I toe walked up till the age of 11, so ive never had a functional gait pattern switching in and out of right/left stance. I came down onto my left side more and first. This has lead to me getting stuck in the left aic right bc pattern, but due to the equinus i cant weight bare properly on my right leg, so im in right stance but im shifted across with my weight on my left leg. This is therefore the issue: im in the right stance pattern, but i cant get into the proper functional alignment, so i cant stand on the right leg and i cant shift out of right stance. My neck and low back are the main problematic areas. Mainly the neck as its neutral position is twisted and tilted to the left as in right stance, but in order to function suring daily life, i have to compensate by twisting and sidebending right. My question would be: Is there any way to shift out of right stance musculature without adequate lower leg ROM? Im assuming the answer is generally a no, and im aware walking will undo any manual corrections regardless. However, even being able to just twist the spine as a whole to the right, or a way to partially get out of the lwft aic right bc pattern, would probably be very helpful and take some stress off my spine, when im not having to be mobile. Any even possibly useful info or advice would be appreciated, regardless of how effective the outcome might end up being. Thank you for providing such in-depth and factual information.

@@CodeOfTyFilm Yes, absolutely. That is what I’m describing in the video. That’s what Postural Restoration is all about. But the origin is “brain” not muscle, so stretching and strengthening wont solve it

@@NealHallinanI agree, the brain is the origin as it is not getting appropriate senses/cues to correctly shift the weight from right to left. But wouldn’t strengthening certain muscles automatically lengthen others to help “reset” the body/brain and release the tension? I think I understand PRI exactly how it’s suppose to be understood. I would think strengthening the correct left side chain would be the next step to teach your brain/body it’s stable on that side. I see it as teaching the brain to hold the appropriate tension to allow shifting from right to left.

@@kyletomczak6302 There is no issue to fix. You simply need a stable left side to complement the right side. You need a “follower” to empower the “leader” and vice versa. A right glute is useless without a left glute medius to empower it. A left adductor is useless without a right posterior glute medius. Our clients/patients don’t have a complementary left side.
@kyletomczak6302Ай бұрын
@ have you seen athletes fall into these patterns often due to one sided sport dominance? Or do you think the pattern was there before the sports that assisted them to be one sided dominant in the first place? I think of the prime example of skateboarding regular vs goofy. What if someone is so strong in regular and can’t neurologically figure out how to skate lefty (goofy)?
@NealHallinanАй бұрын
@ You’re born with the pattern. One sided sports can certainly contribute to over-reliance on their right side, yes. Overhead throwers being the most obvious examples.

What is different between neuro & adaptation habit?
@NealHallinanАй бұрын
Probably not much different. Adaptations have their origin in the brain as a response to changing circumstances, usually based off of some physical or psychological stress. Just thoughts off the top of my head.

Do you have an opinion on "non-movement" approaches for aiding in postural issues? I find your content very enlightening but have also been interested in what's often reffered to as "bioenergetics" for a while. For example, Broda Barnes book 'Thyroid, the unsuspected illness' basically explains hypothyroidism as a major unrecognized health issues. I think he postulates in his book that about 40% of americans are suffering from it. Do you know of any such approaches that could potentially play a role in PRI-related issues and are you familiar with the works of Ray Peat, Broda Barnes, Hans Selye, Gilbert Ling etc? Those are some often reffered to in the "bioenergetics community". I guess I'm wondering if there's any overlap there
@NealHallinanАй бұрын
It's all energy. Even PRI. I even made a video about this. To me, a left AIC pattern is our energy's "home base". It needs to flow and can't get stuck. The more "energy leaks" you have in your soft tissue (we call it pathology), the more the body creates tension to make up for the energy leaks. Tension leads to impaired energy flow and autonomic nervous system problems.
@johaannessАй бұрын
@NealHallinan thank you for replying. And yes I agree. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi showed by putting hardened dead muscle in a solution of ATP making it relax and soften. Restoring energy and energy flow seems to be the key possibly at every level. Thank you for all the amazing content, I wish I had a PRI certified practitioner close to where i live!

Thanks for your videos Neal they are great. My problem with this tho is , I’ve seen many case studies from AIA and Connor Harris that they did left side grounding instead of right and there was drastic improvements when doing right side grounding made it worse so I personally don’t subscribe to this.
@NealHallinanАй бұрын
I don't understand your comment. Who is doing right sided grounding?
@ShimlerrАй бұрын
If I understand correctly In PRI they teach you to ground on your left side , I’ve seen case studies that they did the reverse (right side hip shift , left side abduct and shift) and the relative motions increased, and when they did right side it made it worst.
@NealHallinanАй бұрын
@ I can increase or decrease someone’s range of motion with music, or glasses, or by rubbing their foot in a particular spot. I’ve shown all of this. They are using a biomechanical model on an issue that is at its core a “neuro-sensory” pattern. At that point you can’t compare the two approaches.

Sound is a neglected tool of assessment. The sound of tapotement was a long honored tool of physicians but is now considered outdated, I demonstrated to the elderly couple I cared for today, that were both stuck to the left, that the hollow sound of tapotement on the cartilage on the left side demonstrated that it was under tension and the dull sound on the right side that it was under compression. By concentrating on breathing out on the left side until the resonance reduced and in on the right until resonance could be achieved, their posture distortions resolved. The wife, caring for her physically restricted husband and brother was able to shift the center of gravity from one leg to the other. The husband in the recliner was able get ankle dorsiflexion/knee flexion reflex and the swelling in his feet began to go away.

It is possible to use both side equally. For this you need a pure heart with no corruption, bad feelings, evil thoughts or actions. Free from guild, remorse, debt, injustice and bad relationships. The less you have of this problems the more you will be able to access the other side. For only the good and pure hearted are worthy of using such ability. It is not only limited to body movement it is a complete set of skills you have acces to. Surly not for the evil for it can cause great danger if used by the wrong person.

Both sides equally, I doubt it because the two sides aren't the same. The goal is to have normal asymmetry.
