Meeting Zaheer was a great way for Korra to overcome fear. Sometimes to overcome trauma, you need confrontation instead of moving on.

I always feel like Korra and Bolin have this nice, uncomplicated sort-of-brother-and-sister relationship, especially in Books 3 and 4. When Bolin is sad because Opal's left for the Air Temple, Korra's the one who shoots him a sympathetic look and gives him a pat on his shoulder. And here, the way her expression lights up when she sees him is just pure joy. Best buds!

Zaheer is just such an amazingly written and cool character. You can see his intentions aren't from genuine evil, but to help the world in what he truly believed was right. He was like Korra's therapist this episode and truly helped her overcome her PTSD.
@controlman7490
@controlman7490 3 жыл бұрын
Even though he's a murderer and I personally think that's an irredeemable crime, I totally understand his viewpoint. Someone like the Earth queen was actively oppressing innocent people, which doesn't make her any less of a better person. Zaheer just wanted individuals to be loyal to themselves and not be pressured or forced to swear allegiance to an authority figure, which depending on your ideologies is a good or bad thing. I would say that it's up to any individual human to decide whether they're loyal to a nation or not, but where Zaheer went wrong was trying to implement this mentality by force.

@@controlman7490 I think murder is more gray. If a cop kills someone to save others is that justifiable for you? Zaheer isn't really a serial killer but the queen was in a sense oppressing thousands of people's lives and could do so for generations. Does the murder of 1 person tip the scale over the tyranny and oppression of thousands of thousands of years? That's where I sorta say Zaheer is ma boi.
@byronstone386

@@Raiden0831 It is morally wrong to kill her. Also it wasn't just her he was aiming for. ALL world leaders, whether good or bad were his targets. I didn't like the Earth Queen either but him killing her isn't justified by that.

@controlman7490 3 жыл бұрын
@@Raiden0831 Your example with the cop isn't murder though; that's called justiable homicide. Zaheer literally assassinated the earth queen in 1 of the most violent ways possible and that's murder. Also, like Byron said Zaheer wanted to murder any world leader, which include good ones. If Zaheer murdered Zuko I don't think you would still say he's your boi.

Korra's was physically healed by someone deeply connected to the physical world in Toph, and Korra was spiritually healed by someone deeply connected to the spiritual world in Zaheer. Trauma impacts the mind, body, and soul, and I'm grateful that the LoK acknowledged that.

I think the scene between Korra and Zaheer was important because she needed to get rid of the fear, she needed to see that Zaheer, now bound to chains, was just a men and not some unbeatable god. Korra healed her body with the help of Katara and Toph. She got back to be herself and be with the people she loves and cares about in The Reunion. And now the last step: Face her fears and let the scars heal. And this is a nice callback from book 1 when she was afraid of Amon and Tenzin said to her the importance of talk about her fears and she just did that with Zaheer.

The soundtrack in that scene and after with the Spirit World and Raava is so good. _"I learned to fly, but I'm bound in chains; you have all the power in the world and freedom to use it, but choose to hold yourself down"_ I love that line from Zaheer. This episode reminded me of something I worked on for a client in the past. There is actually a therapeutic method called Somatic Experiencing (SE) - it's a bit on the edge of pseudo-science, but there have been successes with it nonetheless - it's dealing with panic attacks etc. getting triggered after an traumatic event (accidents and the like) and the concept behind it is that the body hasn't fully processed the event to the point where it ends and you go back to your normal functioning. So a part of you is stuck in the natural reaction to this event (fear, flight such automatic impulses) that activates when you encounter a trigger in post-trauma life and get a panic attack. In SE the goal is to create a safe environment to intentionally trigger the reaction and let it play out, to slowly teach the body that this event has passed/ is finished/ completed - you name it. So that it stops the automatic trigger response and goes back to a fully normal reaction cycle for your future encounters.

The way Korra and Zaheer face each other's spirits is similar to how Korra accessed her own Avatar memories in "Beginnings, Part 1". During the episode recap, the scene where Korra and Asami hug has slightly altered animation from the same scene in "Reunion". The tourist voiced by John Michael Higgins was revealed in the Blu-ray commentary to be named "Steve". Despite having a notable role in the episode, Bumi has no speaking lines. This is Jinora's last speaking role in the series. The entrance gate to the Spirit Wilds in Republic City resembles the torii found in Japanese Shinto shrines. They symbolize the boundary between the mundane and the sacred.

If the Fire Nation attacked again, Kuvira can just use this as leverage to rally more people into her cause. She can simply say that the Fire Nation is at it again.

Also you can definitely tell this season was running out of money and time with how quickly they had Zaheer turn a 180 and help Korra just like that. Would have preferred more time dedicated to such an important character and story development, for both of them, but they did their best with all the constraints and bs Nickolodean gave the show. It's not fair.

Episode 8 was supposed to be an episode about Kuvira but the animation budget was cut or something like that i think it would of improved this season a huge amount. Not that it was bad or anything

President Raiko is a douche and am I the only one who finds Asami's showcase of power against Varrick smirk worthy ? 😏 I love Korra's healing journey, however grim, but it makes it feel so raw and real. First she's healed physically then mentally through the help of Toph and finally spiritually with the help of a mortal enemy in Zaheer. For although he wants to end the Avatar cycle and initially taunts her when she visits him in prison, Zaheer acknowledges the depth of her trauma & pain and tries to sorta redeem himself by helping her. I just love this series.... 🥰
@controlman7490
@controlman7490 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest I don't think Zaheer truly feels sorry for what he did. Remember this guy's ideology is pretty much burned into his brain, so while he pitied Korra in that moment, he doesn't regret trying to kill her if it meant accomplishing his worldwide goal. Zaheer overall is a stoic individual, so I doubt him being in prison is really affecting him that much.
@Torniization
@Torniization 3 жыл бұрын
@@controlman7490 Never said he was sorry 🙂 I feel that he acknowledged her trauma and I don't believe for a min he regrets trying to kill her either. Redeem is maybe a wrong word to use in this context but he could've just left her high & dry and told her to bugger off but instead chose to help her reconnect spiritually.. In an "act" of good faith if you will - considering the whole Kuvira dictator situation, which he has indirectly caused by harming Korra and further causing her to spiral into her PTSD which leaves her incapable of performing her Avatar duties.

4:30 See the reason the Fire Lord likely said that was basically because The Fire Nation already has a negative history that they've been working to clean up since Zuko became their leader, what the council was asking todaywas pretty much going to reverse that and drum up the negativity of when they were the evil conquerors who tried to take over the world. So she's saying, unless there's absolutely no other choice, she's not going there.

I think it's fair that the Fire Lord Izumi didn't want to throw the Fire Nation into another full scale war. Someone pointed out that it's like real life occupiers during World War 2. When the allies "won" they limited the Axis powers military strength. I believe they said that Aang lived for another 60 or so years after the events of book 3 in ATLA so there are still some people and families who were impacted by the Fire Nation's occupation so I can understand why Izumi was not trying to rehash that. It's also a bit of sensitive situation since no one knows what will happen once Kuvira is knocked out and the previous Earth Queen did not have a good reputation among her non-brainwashed or royalist citizens.

Goofs When Korra is talking to Zaheer on how he used to speak about chaos and freedom, her sleeves turn a brighter shade of blue when she turns away from him, but when she turns back, her sleeves revert to their normal color. When Zaheer turns away from Korra, the chains on his waist are not twisted as they should have been, considering the bond around his waist is formfitting.

You have to understand Fire lady Izumi’s position in all of this. Fire lord Zuko spent the rest of his life healing the world and fixing the sins of the fire nation and likely seen as a wonderful nation only recently. I am sure victims of the 100 year war are still alive. Izumi has been forced to feel the need to take up a pacifist approach to her relegation with other counties. What she wants to avoid most is likely the look of an aggressive militaristic nation made new.
