Something I don't see mentioned often is the source of Korra's PTSD is largely revealed in this episode. Obviously there is the trauma and after effects of the poison to deal with, but she also was feeling traumatized by the fact she nearly died in the Avatar state - ending the Avatar once and for all. Zaheer points out that she should not "fear what might have been" (her death and the end of the Avatar) and to "hold on" while Korra laments her lack of control of the situation. Imagine being in that situation as Korra, unconnected to your past lives, poisoned, and trapped while being suffocated. I don't think people give Korra nearly the credit she deserves for getting through that and making ANY kind of comeback.

@@theawesomeman9821 yeah that was the point. korra started off rash and somewhat of a bratty teenager for a reason. look at the way she was raised: sheltered, hidden, told she's the chosen one, excelling in her bending, etc. but there's a lovely thing called ~character growth~ that allows korra to blossom into a much better person, even starting by season 3. the ending of season 4 is so important and beautiful, you can see how much she's matured into such a lovely young woman.

For anyone hating on Korra this season, I’m curious how you would rewrite her growth and navigating her PTSD. I personally don’t see anything wrong with how it was written and depicted. I like this season a lot. She had to learn initially for 3 years how to walk, and how to be somewhat physically capable again (which we witnessed in Korra Alone). She learned from Toph about the extra poison inside of her and managed to get it out herself. Physically she was healed (although still rusty), but mentally she was still dealing with the trauma. When fighting Kuvira, we see that she needs the avatar state because she’s rusty when in her physical state (which makes sense - Kuvira is a top fighter and Korra hasn’t trained using her top strength in a while). But because she never really solved her mental issues, she was unable to finish her off. Korra finally addresses that this episode in confronting Zaheer. Everyone had started doubting her and losing trust in her at that point that it really bothered her. Remember, she’s someone who wants to be strong and unstoppable. Her trauma and inability to handle situations has knocked her down a peg. So she tries to go to Zaheer and fix the problem. He decides to help her due to their common interest in stopping Kuvira, and Korra learns that she has control. She learns to accept what happened to her but not let it overcome her or be in denial. This is a crucial step in the process to overcoming PTSD (or rather, managing it). Sometimes it just takes a wake up call, a change in mindset, etc. I find this situation of her overcoming her mental trauma totally believable. Remember, it’s not like she automatically got over the situation. She still has that fear but it doesn’t control her like it used to. And it’s not like this came out of the blue. She has been learning ways to cope and deal with the trauma, first by having a support system with Asami, then resolving the physical issues, and then confronting her fears. This decision to meet Zaheer was a culmination of the the growth that she realized she needed to resolve her traumas

Look at how she helped that airbender from falling off the bridge. Look at how she suggested to Tenzin about the kids helping to train the new airbenders. Look at how she decided to be selfless and give herself up to save the air nation. This doesn’t mean every decision will work out correctly for Korra. But to say that this season is the only season to represent her growth is false. This season just represented another aspect of her growth, I.e. navigating a traumatic situation and growing from it. Aang spent a lot of season 3 growing from his traumatic killing at the end of book 2 in ATLA. Why do we trash Korra for following a similar growth (and imo a more nuanced look into her struggles - Aang kinda deus ex machina’ed his way back into action and the avatar state imo)

I would have changed her interactions with zaheer a little bit. Idk how I feel about Zaheer essentially telling her she's choosing to let stuff that happened in her past bother her. It's like your former bully tellin to get over how they used to beat your ass in grade school. "Bro, you still mad about that?" Your attack should not be tellin you that, or at the very least that should be addressed. Also think they maybe they wrapped it up too quick, they could have shown more examples of her still going through it but learning how to manage it. Stuff like the avatar hallucinations not scaring her anymore. Other than that I don't think they really flopped on the PTSD stuff.

Aang SHOULD've been completely traumatized by seeing physical evidence of the genocide of his people and the actual bones of his beloved mentor. Instead he threw one (1) avatar state tantrum and got over it. The same can be said Sokka who SHOULD have broken every bone in his body multiple times with all the slapstick humor injuries he got but he was fine. LoK treats everything, from physical injuries to mental and emotional trauma, in a more realistic way. You can't judge both series the same way.

The non-stop korra hate was funny at first but now its old. Its not like Korra had spirit water to magically make things better. Aang failed, he literally died. Katara just happened to have spirit water. Aang lost his connection to the Avatar state. And he just happened to get hit with a rock, in just the right spot. I think Korra's struggle is more realistic, especially in terms of mental health.

I think people overlook the fact that Korra has come up against much more difficult and dangerous villains than Aang ever did. Ozai was a very straightforward villain with stereotypical villain goals: world domination. But each of Korra’s villains have been largely ideological (except for Vaatu, who was literally the embodiment of darkness, so...) and each took away elements of herself until she was completely broken (bending, Avatar connection, agency). I much prefer ATLA, but Korra was a much more realistic and grounded Avatar in a very different world. Plus, I hate how Aang gets celebrated for becoming more aggressive and confident but Korra never gets recognition for the immense growth she went through to be more empathetic and calm.

I just realized something. Korra takes place 70 years later after the original series and she was 17 when she came to Republic City and 18 years old during season 2 and 3. Then the three year time skip happen and she's 21 years old now. So that mean it's been 73 years since then. Sozin's comet appears once every 100 years right so that means there's 27 years left before it returns. So Korra being 21 plus the 27 years later, means she will be 48 years old by then! Imagine how powerful she will be since her go to element is fire 🔥🔥

Not really. Season 1; Amon's make-up washed off and was finished off by his brother. Amon was already over when his leiutenant found out tbh. Season 2; Jinora saved Korra when Vaatu was moments away from ending korra. Season 3; Jinora and the other airbenders saved korra when zaheer was moments away from ending korra. Season 4; Kuvira decided to stop after her weapon malfunctioned. Korra getting clapped became a common trope.

I think Korra has one of the best depictions of PTSD in mainstream media, certainly in animated media. She takes years to recover from a horribly traumatic experience (or experiences, if you think about the many traumatic events she experiences each season). PTSD is something a lot of people never recover from. The fact that one treatment from Toph was not enough to "cure" her is very realistic, within the confines of the story.

Korra definitely is extremely capable(you don't recall how strong she was on her own in season 3 finale or even if widely disliked season 2 where her own spirit was strong enough to take out Unavaatu at its peak power level). She was up against the perfect foil to her each time. Amon the strongest of all bloodbenders, who has an Avatar-like capability. Unalaq who has the greatest spiritual connection, other than the Avatar(while benefiting from Vaatu's influence on the world being far greater; due to the disparity in treatment of nonbenders, how Ba Sing Se has long been and the Civil War amongst Water Tribes). Zaheer, who was the greatest challenge to her mindset and literally posited her. Diminishing her ability to finish the fight on her own. Kuvira, who took up a job the Avatar has long held and is one of the greatest at out maneuvering opponents in a fight. As well as her cunning in political optics and covert military tactics.

Jinora helped Korra with Unavaatu considering he was two enemies fused into one. With Zaheer, Korra was flippin poisoned. And with Kuvira, Korra came back rusty. Finally, Aang was literally given energy bending from the Lion turtle that came on the exact day of his battle with Ozai combined with the rock hitting his back. He also was saved and had help many times in ATLA. Then you’re saying Korra didn’t grow much when the reason she ended up being poisoned by Zaheer in the first place was due to her sacrificing her life for the sake of the new air nation.

“Korra saved me” “That’s not something you hear often” Bro what. Y’all give Korra so much shit but praise Jinora despite the fact that she got captured IN EVERY SINGLE SEASON. It’s crazy. Season 1, captured by Amon alongside her family. Season 2, lost in the spirit world. Season 3, captured TWICE, once by the bison wranglers and once by Zaheer alongside the other airbenders. And here she is in Seaon 4, having to be saved by Korra again. So yes, “Korra saved me” is something Jinora probably says very often. There is not one character in this entire franchise that takes more Ls than Jinora 😂

Bolin said it in book 1 ep 4, thanking Korra after she saved him from Amon, Unalaq thanked Korra after she saved him from the kidnappers. Korra saves Jinora and gets in trouble because of the Airbenders in every season finale (except book 4).

He would guaranteed side with korra over kuvira based on his philosophy. Ozai was just "burn the world." No other aspirations or introspection to his worldview. His only interesting character aspect was his affect on his children. Ozai is mad cut/paste villain
