Fun fact: the little boy Grog spoke to to find Ripley was voiced by Travis and Laura's son, Ronin. Also, Laura voiced the little girl he was playing with. They told the story of how difficult it was to get Ronin to record those lines because he wanted to play a dragon instead.

The Hells are a plane of existence in D&D cosmology, like the Fire Plane and the Fey Realm, where devils reside. There is also the Abyss, which is where demons come from. Because devils and demons are different (and hate each other).
@nyghtmoonАй бұрын
@caffeinedelusions No, clarification of aspects of D&D are not spoilers. Demons and Devils are used interchangeably by most people in reality, but they are different in the game. The 9 Hells are not the same as the Abyss. Giving Angela a general framework to ground herself in the world is good. Foreshadowing events, pointing out connections to later parts of the campaign or the other campaigns, explaining backstories, etc are spoilers.

Except that LoVM changes continuity and breaks from DnD norms. A character that is canonically a devil in the streamed games is described as a demon in the cartoon, so presumably the cartoon is not following the same rules as DnD.
@chipsalomАй бұрын
Devils are lawful evil beings and hell (the nine hells, very inspired by Dante)is the plane of the afterlife lawful evil beings are sent to. Demons are chaotic evil and are from the plane called the "Abyss", where chaotic evil beings are sent to after death.. Devils and demons are actually at war in something called b the "blood war". Even though devils are evil, they represent order and are at war against the attempt by chaotic evil demons to gain greater influence of chaos which expands The growth of the abyss and the influence of chaos. Devils are all about attemots to entrap corruptible mortals into infernal contracts, selling their souls for promises of power, vanity, etc. that give devils souls of mortals they've corrupted to use as draftees into their army in the blood war vs chaotic demons. Demons are pure chaotic senseless evil and gain the souls of mortals who were pure chaotic senseless evil they use in THEIR army for the blood war. There the lower outer planes of the afterlife (there is also neutral evil, primarily selfish, stkf serving type evil that is more about personal evilness than lawful corruptive evil temptation and senseless chaotic evil of the more purely chaotic, senseless paychotic type that sinoly loves spreading suffering for the enjoyment of seeing suffering, rather than a more ordered, manipulative corruptive lawful evil type. Lawful evil would be like a dictator who uses totalitarian means to enforce order through avarice l, and fascistic type personalities. The use of laws to exercise unrighteous dominion. chaotic evil would be like a swrial killer or purely psychopathic burting of others senselessly without even a pretense of law and order and claims of laws for use to control others. Their opposite would be the higher outer plains of chaotic good, lawful good, and neutral good. In between would be the plane of true neutrality that believes there is a necessary balance that must be maintained, light creates shadow, shadow is dispelled with might, its kinda more just less of a deity type existence, and more of a belief if a balance of nature itself. You might find MrRhexx's lore videos that explain the DnD cosmology of the planes of fire, water, earth and air, the outet planes where souls go in the afterlife based on the deity they aerved or how they lived v their life, the positive and negative mayerial planes, the prime material planes (mortal planes), the plane of the fey wild where elves and other cfey creatures originate from, the shadowfell (the feyeild and shadowfell are kinda parallel morror dimensions of the prime material plane... The shadowed is sorta like the upside down in stranger things a dark mirror dinension of reality, wheras it's counterpart, the feywild or fey realm is a whimsical, mercurial mirror dimension of reality, then the astral sea/astral plane that is sorta the space in between it all that is a realm of dreaming, imagination, where your own thoughts can manifest into something real, you float and move putely through thought or, desire, or wishes, the deep astral,v which is the border of the far planes, where beings from dimensions beyond our understand reside and sometimes invade from... Think like old gods like crhulu, mind flayers, beholders and creatures of pure aberration from anything we can understand. The far realms are kinda Lovecraftian inspired , realms so alien that to peer into them results in madness, populated by creatures of cosmic horror, elder god type creatures, lanacapes our minds cant begin to comprehend, but from where there are often incursions of beings of abberation that seek to dominate more of the universe, who don't operate through magic but rather the power of pure thought so foreign to our understanding it literally is a paychic force. Beings of complete nightmare, pure thought driven by madness etc cone from. It's a truly deeply fascinating take on cosmology. there's also the ethersl plane, the plane of limbo, all with their role they play in existence. My favorite lore of dnd is the lore of the planes (google planescaoe, DnD). It explains the realms of nirvana, elysium, mt Celestia, the abyss, pandemonium, Limbo, the nine hells, the evil , neutral, and good deities, it's quite a fun rabbit hole greatly inspired by mythology, great authors, the Divine Comedy of Dante, explains angelic beings as well as devils and demons, planar beings, the fascinating city called Sigil which is basically the central hub of the entire cosmology of the planes, creatures that ride the dnd equivalent of spaceships called spelljammers that are used to traverse the astral sea, conplete with astral pirate type critters, beings that seek mortals astral projecting to cut their tether back to reality leaving their body essentially catatonic on the prime material because their astral projection has become severed, trapping their awareness from finding it's way back to the mortal body of the astral projection, etc. I know i once again just gave you a HUGE lore dump but with you've seemed to find interesting and entertaining, i think itd be right up your ally, and the way DnD cosmology and pplz talk of different plabes and realms will suddenly make waaaay more sense, including how magic works, etc. Ok, i again really overwhelmed ya I'm sure lol.

And thats Percy.

interesting concept, but since the advent of guns, there has actually been a relatively steady decline in battlefield casualties. ancient battlefields would have tens of thousands of soldiers fighting at the same time. roman armies would typically march with up to 20 thousand troops against similar numbers. as weapons and armour technology advanced, the need for such large armies dropped. a good example would be the man who invented the gatling gun. he was a battlefield surgeon in the american civil war, and as you said, the horrible things he saw led him into creating a weapon that could replace 100 men from the firing line with a single machine gun. it worked. not to mention the sheer shock and awe effect. if you immediately frighten your enemy into retreat with overwhelming firepower, there will be fewer losses on both sides

Demons and devils do not die when you defeat them on the material plane. Demons return to the Abyss, devils to the Hells. The only way to *end* them is to defeat them on their home plane. Their only way to gain a foothold on the material plane is by making deals with the mortals that live there. Percy's vengeance was a call, and a demon of vengeance answered. The original pepperbox was Orthax's last connection to Percy, until Scanlan destroyed it; but there was Ripley, who has her own List of names. The perfect vessel to get back at Percival for breaking the pact.

@eastersliceАй бұрын
That's my guess as well. I'm thinking that Percy did create a current that allowed the magical energy between the two items to flow, and then used some kind of trigger (possibly Diplomacy) to detonate Ripley's contraption. If that had been the real Plate of the Dawnmartyr, it might have caused a much larger explosion. If so, he might not have survived the blast. But, knowing Percy, he might have considered that the best outcome -- as long as Ripley died with him.

Considering Ripley was voluntarily helping Umbrasyl in Season 2 and voluntarily helped the Briarwoods pre-Season 1, I don't think Orthax is corrupting her but rather feeding into her innate personality. Also, notice how she was able to coax Orthax into doing things her way, but in season 1 Percy wasn't able to. Orthax-Ripley have a cohesive relationship where he knows he is getting fed and is willing to let Ripley get what she needs even if he isn't getting his wants immediately.

My read is that Ripley is 100% herself. She is a psychopath that considers herself better than other people because of her intelligence. Without Orthax, she would be doing exactly the same thing that she is doing. That's also why she has an obsession with Percy--he's the only one she considers an equal. I think she is using Orthax like she uses everyone. Orthax is less in-control with Ripley than they were with Percy. Percy was easily overcome with feelings of vengence that Orthax could manipulate to influence Percy's actions and ultimately take full control. Ripley doesn't have the same kind of human emotion, so Orthax can't manipulate her in the same way. All said, I LOVE how they are developing her in the animated show. She's such an interesting villain, and an excellent mirror to Percy.

He's also objectively doing a lot of "good" personally for his team and society in general by taking out some truly evil actors in the world. To rip off Samuel Colt and coin a phrase, "The gods made men, but Percy de Rolo made them equal." Ripley apparently wants to take that to heart, but like you said, Percy either regrets his invention, or is being particularly Noble and snobbish about it, and figuring that only certain people have the qualities needed to possess such a thing. I'm never quite sure which. It is also particularly telling about Percy and his early years that he was bound to and used Orthax for his inspirations for YEARS, andnever bothered to know his name. 😂
@kenle2Ай бұрын
First, Percy didn't realize Orthax was "helping" him until it took full possession of his body under Whitestone. He thought it was just his human desire for vengeance pushing him into a very dark inspiration on a new way to kill stuff - hence the Pepperbox. He did know he was building something that could cause an endless cycle of death, but he wanted revenge on his "list" so much, he only cared in his most introspective moments. Now that he's face-to-face with his "Frankenstein's Monster" of gun's proliferation, he feels the guilt more acutely and he tries to stop Ripley from initiating the cycle, even if he knows he can only delay it. Second, Percy does have a sense of noble "responsiblity" AND privilege, since that's the ethos he learned as a boy. But it's less that "privilege" that drives him, than his realization that his original desire for vengence is about to unleash carnage on the world. He doesn't want ANYONE else to use his weapons, even though he knows that's pretty much impossible to prevent. He's caught. He needs his weapons to try and do "good" and help his friends, and he does take guilty "pride" in his inventive skill, but he hates it makes him "accessory" to all the murders to come from his inspiration.

I feel the "what if the oppressed become the opressors" line was a bit of a misfire. It's a popular cliché, but one perpetuated by ingrained elites who want to scare people out of trying to change things. Far better argument is that more guns means more guns in the hands of authorities, helping them monopolise force even more. And for an argument against revolution, much better to point to the possibility of creating a power vacuum _without_ a new authority: usually a far bloodier prospect than any tyrrany.
@brilobox2Ай бұрын
Its not that ‘oppressed become the oppressors’, thats a slogan for pearl clutchers. Its that chaos allows the most vicious oppressed the opportunity rise to the top and become the next line of oppressors, essentially just making things worse. You get chaos and usually worse oppressors. And realistically a better means of violence always ends up in the hands of those with the means of production before anyone else.

@@XanderWhat The Critical Role episodes that this one episode is based on? Or the whole show is based on? Because if it's the latter, my question still stands. She hasn't put 'blind' on any other reaction. I thought she was going to wear a blindfold this whole episode for some reason.

My question is. WHAT the Hell does Kaylie want? Scanlan didn't even know she existed till about a week ago. so him fucking up is a given, is she wanting him to go from 0 -100 in 0.1 seconds, cut the guy some slack, he's never been in this position before and has no clue how to act, at least he's trying

Probably wouldn’t have been necessary if he wasn’t trying to convince his daughter he’s not a PoS by…abandoning his friends and getting drunk trying to say anything remotely meaningful.
@PensandoRPGАй бұрын
@@brilobox2, he was actually trying to talk to his daughter and find his friends at the same time. That is the point of this episode; he could not do both. He literally cried about it while talking to Pike. He literally said he was trying to do both things and failed. Still, the comment is a joke because of many things that happened in the campaign that I do not want to spoil here.

This episode seems to handle the gun topic in an odd way. Percy saying the oppressed will become oppressors is bizarre. The argument that guns level the playing field when it comes to force and power is true and that’s why it’s actually so important for people not to be taught to fear them but instead taught responsible gun ownership. Bad people who use their natural strength against others will always exist. Giving the weak feasible defenses keeps bad people from giving in to the temptation to harm them because they know there could be dangerous consequences for their actions. I actually think it’s manipulation that’s been going on for decades to message to the masses that guns should be feared and not used as deterrents, as a means to eventually disarm the populace and pave the way for more authoritarian rule. People need to be more skeptical of politicians with armed guards wanting to remove effective weaponry from the law abiding population they “serve”.
