Vex's talk with her brother and her speech to her father is some of best voice acting I've ever heard from Laura Bailey. I'd also like to call attention to the fact that both in the show and the actual Campaign, Captain Jarret, who is a regular human guy with no special abilities or magic, fought with Vox Machina on the field of battle against Dragon godzilla with nothing but a sword and pure spite.
@ryanschramm8147Ай бұрын
Also just want to throw out there that in the campaign Jarret isn't a captain, he's just a random mercenary that VM hired to guard their keep in Emon, and he just so happens to be really good at his job so they just kept going to him until he became a recurring character. The Larkin thing is absolutely not important, but as with every odd but specific thing in this show, it's a reference to a funny moment in the campaign. Raishan introduced herself as Larkin to VM and allies and it was so subtle, some of the cast took a while to figure out they were Raishan. Except for Liam, who never got it, and after a while, Liam/Vax asked "where is Raishan", not realising she was with them. Here's the scene (no spoilers for you): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX63k6WdiNaBhKs

Remember Matt Mercer is an amazing storyteller who plans his stories long term and uses classic storytelling elements. You have an introduction, the conflict and heros" journey with growth and loss so the wins feel earned, and then redemption and success. Early episodes trilogy/early story arc (Briarwood) was the intro. Middle episodes/middle story arc (Chroma Conclave, Kaylie, Ripley) are where we are now. You will adore the next 3 episodes. Minor spoiler - the critter community discovered 50 episodes into campaign 3 that Vox Machina is his Star Wars prequel trilogy and the Chroma Conclave is his Clone War. He planned a 10 year, 3 campaign universe arc. If the ratings stay good, you will experience the greatest show in the history of television.

To quickly and shortly without spoilers explain "Larkin" meme. During live Campaign, Raishan has appeared a couple more times between major actions portrayed here. She appeared under couple different illusions to stay incognito. Vox Machina agreed to meet her before battle with ice dragon Vorugal. Raishan appeared and indroduced herself with a random name Larkin. Sam (Scanlan) was a bit trolling but he actually didnt realise who exactly that was even though rest of the party knew immedietaly. After throwing a hint or two and Keyleth kicked him he admited he just got it. Funny. After 10 min or so VM are discussing strategies and Liam (Vax) says "...also we dont have any idea where Raishan is". They all look at him with disbelief. Laura looks at Liam and says "Larkin is Raishan" and it all erupts in a giant _there is no way you JUST got that_. One of the most memorable memes of the campaign

Now that they've dropped the name, I think it's safe to explain the Larkin thing. In the campaign when they go after Vorugal, Raishan pretends to be "Larkin" so that no one knows she's helpin VM fight the conclave. Everybody in the group knew he was Raishan, but Liam made a bit out of pretending to be oblivious, so after the battle, when Raishan has dropped the disguise, Vax expresses concern about "Wait, where's Larkin? We've gotta find Larkin!" And of course it turned into a meme in the community.

_"What was unsaid will remain so. How can I live with that? How can anyone?"_ That was what Vax needed to hear to finally stop running. And boy, am I glad that of all the moments to have them reconnect, it was this. An exchange also taken from the campaign: "I don't want to be alone tonight, do you?" "I haven't wanted to be alone most nights." I think Percy would have wanted that for them. He did say that Vax deserved some happiness himself. He just didn’t realize that it would come at the cost of his own life. Finding love in the wake of tragedy. And what a choice to have Percy’s speech about truth being the best bargaining chip one could have being the key to finally get Vex to crack through Syldor’s armor and make him come to reason. Just hearing him call her “Lady Vex’ahlia” means there’s hope for him. He even chose to lead his army from the front. And funnily enough, the “raving mystic” in the cell was meant to be Taliesin Jaffe, the voice of Percy lol

Percy had tracked down Ripley, but was captured before he could strike. I believe VM were in town for particularly rare spell components, to prevent Grog from being possessed by a lich... it's why his chest is scarred. Now we know why Allura didn't mention Byroden when she told her side of the story (or brought up the gathering of allies that they're only now getting to). Interesting timing, the twins' father taking them away before the dragon struck, leaving their mother to burn. Couldn't let his own blood perish, however polluted. There was never any love there, and Syldor never softened like this. VM went to Syngorn's leader, Tyrelda, while the city was in the Feywild. The city returned to the material plane when the time came to march on Emon. Liam forgot Raishan was Larkin, when she showed up to help take down Vorugal, hence the meme. Thordak was never this clever. But these changes are for the sake of the drama, and I usually can't blame them for it.

The thought and effort and raw emotion that she pours into her characters, her openness and willingness to show vulnerability is unparalleled. All of her fellow players and her DM would definitely say the same (and have many times). I knew that Vex's grief in this episode would break me, same as it did in the campaign...but in the end Vax is right, his sister IS the strongest person he knows. Just a side note on Scanlan: in the campaign/game, Scanlan has a really high Charisma, which in game mechanics means he roles really high Deception checks. Every time someone else in the group got suspicious and tried to Insight check him (another game mechanic), he out-roled them with Deception. So in game terms no one was ever able to really understand how much insecurity Scanlan really had - and no one really stepped up to give him the help that he needed (even though the group had, IMHO, more than sufficient empathy to help, had they known)
