In various folklores, the fey have been portrayed as beautiful but dangerous. It makes sense that the fey realm would be much the same

Mercer has always leaned into the idea that even the most whimsical fey has a dark side in the best way, and Ashley definitely followed suit in c3.

What really makes me laugh is how many animals keep attacking Grog on their journey. It's like they see him and go "Oh man! I never get to eat one of those usually! Now is my time!"

So in the original campaign, when Grog tried to get rid of Craven Edge, it killed him. Instantly.

Yes that episode was wild! Travis initially rolled a natural 20 on a wisdom save to separate from the sword's influence and everyone was happy. Then he realized Grog was exhausted which meant that Travis has to roll the wisdom save at disavatge and then rolled super low and the sword legit ate his soul. Talk about a rollercoaster! I highly recommend this video if you want a supercut of Grog and Craven Edge in the campaign kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4OyYpWerNx2r5o

The truly insane thing was that Travis didn't remember the disadvantage until after the episode wrapped and so he brought it up at thr start of the next one...and so Grog faceplanted about five minutes into the ep. I have a vivid memory of going "I don't even have my drink yet! What is going onnnnnnn" First live death for me!
@EvanED Жыл бұрын
@@bookwormwithwings Travis remembered disadvantage during the same episode, but not until the end of the rest they took. In 1x50 (v=W4e4gTmoGi4), 25:15 is the start of the rest with Matt calling for Grog's CON save at 26:28. At 29:03 is where Travis thinks about exhaustion, and a few seconds later realized that his saving throw should have been at disadvantage. 29:28 is the second roll.

Worst part is that the bird in the start was modeled after Matt and Marishas real life bird who passed away after they had already planned that part in the episode. They apparently forgot until they watched it

Another element to the Feywild vs. Vax conflict: in D&D, there are two realms that are kind of layered over our plane and exist in the same place, one positive (for lack of a better word), and one negative. The former is the Feywild, the latter is the Shadowfell. In 5e lore, the Raven Queen (who the matron of ravens is based on), is from the Shadowfell. So I've seen fan theories that the Feywild is attacking Vax as a nod to that lore, that he's now antithetical to the Feywild

They brought in Billy Boyd (Peregrin "Pippin" Took of The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy) to voice Garmelie and Cheech Marin to voice Trinket during the mushroom trip scene.

That they actually show us some of Garmeelie's drawings... man the animating team and storyboarders had fun this episode. Matt's descriptions of the pervy caricatures in game were good but I NEEDED the visuals lol And the fae realm is INCREDIBLY dangerous, with lots of things that will murder you in 'entertaining' ways. I don't think Vax's presence causes death other than things not liking his bad attitude or his being a champion of the Matron and coming after him specifically. The fae realm is just dialed up to 11 in general, and in game, it took several 4-hour episodes and a lot of injuries, even some near-deaths for them to even get to where the vestige was.
@ShadowyFox_86 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that his mentality brings the attention of things, but he is the champion of a being that is the polar opposite of the Feywild. It actually makes a lot of sense that everything is against him.

Yeah, Vax is being attacked by creatures in the fairy realm is because the matron of ravens is technically from like the "Shadow realm" and that realm and the fey realm are at odds with each other. And so yeah, the creatures of the fey realm are attacking him bc he is a champion of the Matron. This also happened within the campaign, IIRC.

A couple of key voice guests in this episode. Billy Boyd (Pippin) voiced Gamilie, and, totally appropriately, Trinket was voiced by Cheech Marin, or Cheech and Chong. The Fae Realm in its deadly beauty kind of reminded me of parts of Australia. 🙂

I love all the changes to the campaign, and Grog's story in particular. It gives purpose to the Earthbreaker Groon fight, and the time with Craven Edge. Before, those were just kind of one and done. But now, it becomes an actual arc. And they've made Umbrasyll so much more than he was in the campaign. In the campaign, he was just kind of the big dumb muscle.

Poor Percy got blinded by a nymph in the stream 5 minutes after entering the fey realm. The charm wore off pretty fast after that. The satyr's played by Billy Boyd! Two hobbits in, and I really want Elijah and Sam to voice characters too! Throw in Martin Freeman to complete the set
@ShadowyFox_86 Жыл бұрын
The Fey Realm is definitely a weird, alien place. It's less like another country and more like an alien planet. Things may look similar, but they are not what people know. Matt and the crew lean heavily into real world beliefs of thr Fey for this one. Mythology treats the Fey as beautiful but dangerous and alien; you never mess with them. The danger of the Fey Realm is definitely real, and so that bird was just an example. It's a brutal place. Death still exists there, so unfortunately Vax didn't realize contribute to the bird dying. I kind of love that we're seeing a happy Percy, but I also am seeing that this is pre-trauma Percy coming out. That this is Percy as a child leading the group. Poor Grog. This sword did an even worse number on him in the campaign, and we're just lucky that it left him weak (and not how it killed him).

There was a snippet in Pass through Fire where a huge dragon opens its eyes in Vaxs vision. Our current thought is that Thordaks plan involves trying to wake up a more powerful dragon. Could be very much wrong on that plan but fun to speculate
@NoActuallyGo-KCUF-Yourself Жыл бұрын
I don't know how much GM Mercer borrows from Forgotten Realms, but that setting has a lot of awakening dracolich (undead dragon) plots. Could be cool. I think Thordak just wants to go all the way dracolich himself.

@Fandom Zone Craven Edge grew because Craven Edge lied to Grog. Remember when Grog asked him if he ever gets full and Craven Edge replied with, "I hunger always"? Yeah. Total Lie. At least as far as the actual in-game item is concerned. Craven Edge's passives in it's Item Stat Block is that Craven Edge increases the wielder's strength every time it damages a living target. This Strength increase resets on short or long rest. If the wielder's Strength ever reaches 25, Craven Edge grows and becomes more jagged, adding Necrotic Damage to the blade until the next time the wielder sleeps. The drawback? If Craven Edge is in this state and the wielder sleeps, the wielder must roll a Constitution Saving Throw. If they fail the Saving Throw, Craven Edge devours their soul and instantly kills them. Sylas never had that problem because he was a Vampire. Vampires don't need sleep. Also, I'm pretty sure Vampires don't have souls. Grog, on the other hand, does have a soul and does need sleep. And in the game, as others have alluded to, Travis, intentionally, didn't have Grog sleep because he wanted to max out Craven Edge. Then he went to sleep. And failed the Saving Throw. And woke up dead. Pike brought Grog back to life and Keyleth banished Craven Edge to another plane of existence. In the Animated Series, they decided not to kill Grog, but rather to have Craven Edge, effectively, reduce Grog's Strength to Zero and apply a curse on him to prevent his Strength from ever going back up.
