I blame Percy for 4/5ths of it. In campaign, Laura asked to do a check for traps, Matt says go for it, then while she's rolling Taliesin says he wants to carefully lift the armor. He acted hastily and didn't wait for Laura's roll. Laura could have been at the hole for sure but she was at least being more careful than Taliesin cared to wait for.

@@andersenmacleod Yes Vex is greedy, yes she is nosey, and she makes mistakes, but as far as this incident it's Percy that taunted Vex after she voiced caution, then triggered the trap without waiting for a check. IF Percy hadn't done those things, it is highly likely things would have played out differently.

Even knowing that this part of the campaign was coming... it was still soul destroying to watch. And Liam O'Brien needs a goddamn award simply for the times he and his CR characters have brought people to tears with his voice acting. They're all amazing, don't get me wrong but Liam has always been superb when it comes to angsty moments. I am both excited for and dreading what I know is coming next. And now we have to wait another week!!!

Probably because in 5E that's just an int-based Investigation roll which any character with that proficiency can do every bit as well.

@@elbruces But rogues get Expertise and Reliable Talent. At their current level its impossible for Vax to roll anything below a 10 for checking for traps, not so for Percy. Add to that Evasion and Uncanny Dodge in case they set the trap off anyway, and it’s just a bad call to assume any class can handle traps the same way a rogue can.

@@elfbreath to be fair, Uncanny Dodge doesn’t help on damage from saving throws. Though it is true that some traps use attack rolls, in my experience and this situation, saves are much more common than attacks (in traps). TLDR: Uncanny Dodge doesn’t always help.

@@egregastandindus1193 My bad, I did actually forget Uncanny Dodge and Evasion are basically the same ability for different situations. But I think the point still stands. Rogues are MADE to detect and disarm traps, and while other classes can do it too, it makes no sense not to use a rogue to do it if you have one available. Just like bards and druids and rangers can heal, but why would you depend on them to if you had a perfectly good cleric lying around?

@The Incredible Fella I imagine it's because this season, it's more of The Dragons, and then Vax and Vex's character story, with Grog as a B plot, much like last season, it was The Briarwoods, and then Percy's character story, with Pike as a B plot. You can tell from the way they seeded in Vax and Vex and their relationship/the idea of their separation and the Matron of Ravens in the first 2 episodes too.

Funny enough, in the campaign Vex WAS part rogue by this point and declared that she was going to check for traps. Sadly, Taliesin/Percy declared that he was reaching for the Deathwalker's Ward and it's unclear if Matt was able to hear Laura's intention to check for traps over everyone else talking or if he decided that Percy's action would take less time and therefore take priority. It was a hard call for him to make as a DM, but in his words recently, "[she] should have rolled better."

The Belt of Dwarvenkind also increases his Constitution score by 2, makes him resistant to poison and gives him advantage on saves against being poisoned, he can speak the Dwarven language (it would also give him the ability to read and write in Dwarven if he weren't illiterate), and he has advantage on Charisma checks when dealing with Dwarves.

Knew it was coming, but it still wrecked me... The flashbacks of them as kids really hit it home. I've rewatched it 4 times and I still cry every time. Liam's voice acting, the music, the animation.. They did a phenomenal job translating and expanding on the event from the stream. Bring on the next 3 episodes!!

The thing I love most about what they did with the flashbacks is that they set it up like we're gonna have a Vex moment. And they flip that right at the end, you don't even realize they were actually building Vax the whole time. Fun stuff.

It has taken me watching it once solo and then about six times in reaction channels to not tear up or outright cry, and that's with me absolutely KNOWING it was coming even the first watch since I'd seen all of C1. The way they built up the emotions with the flashbacks first and then Liam just NAILING the line deliveries. (Laura too with Vex's promising to not go far from him.) VERY chef's kiss.

Lots of other more important things to mention, but my input for this episode will be that Grog found a Belt of Dwarven Kind. In 5E this means his CON is increased by 2 to a max of 20, Advantage on Persuasion checks when interacting with Dwarves, Advantaged against Poison and Resistance to Poison Damage, Darkvision (60ft) and can speak, read and write Dwarvish. Unfortunately he is Illiterate which is a carry over from Pathfinder and Matt ruled he could barely understand Dwarish writing since he couldn't read and right Common. Also Cashaw is voiced by the amazing Will Fridele. Voice of Terry Mcginnis in Batman Beyond and played Eric Matthews, brother to Cory in Boy Meets World!

A Nat 1 doesn't mean insta-death. The problem arose from the fact that she was heavily damaged from the previous encounter, so the trap brought her to below 0 hp. The trap in this instance negates death saves and kills instantly when the target is reduced to 0 or lower.

I loved how they altered things to still show that Vex was looking for traps in the Livestream when Percy touched the armour. Every time I watch this bit it's still a gut punch and I cry. Especially as Vex is my fave 😭

@@ArcherWillows This. In the campaign Laura was JUST about to finish the sentence "I check for traps" when Taliesin said "I touch the armour." Unfortunately, they were BOTH interacting with the sarcophagus at the same time and so Matt had to go through with Percy touching the armour bc Vex wouldn't have completed her trap check before Percy touched things. So that wasn't a show alteration... the scene played out pretty much exactly as it did in the campaign. The only alteration was the flashbacks added into the show.

@EsquilaxM My guesses based on the episode titles and how the first season went, as well as the way they're condensing some things and extending/adding others [Possible Spoilers from this point on]: This season, I think they're only going to deal with Umbrasyl, so we'll get Kevdak and Feywild, then s3, fight Vorugal somewhat early on, head to Marquet and Glintshore, and end it right after the Thordak fight, and I think Keyleth and Scanlan would get the spotlight that time (especially if they end up doing Raishan in s3). As for where season 3 will end, I don't think it will be "Fix Him", I think it will be "This is going to be fun, fun, fun!" Of course, ALL of this is dependent on how soon/if they get green lit for 4, because if they do, they may want to spread some other things out and let it breathe a bit, but also, I hope s4 if they get one, is the Whispered One arc

Here's a little neat fact about the intro music. Neal Arcee en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neal_Acree is the composer. When he heard that Critical Role was going to put out an animated series, Neal wrote a version of the theme, then rented an orchestra and sent the audio as his audition to Critical Role to become the series composer. Kinda awesome.

The reaction to the name Pervon reminds me of a game I ran many years ago where the villain was actually a bard, and he was particularly nasty because he just avoided interacting with the party. He'd just convince OTHER folks to fight the party. So then there was this paladin. The bard convinced the paladin the party was evil... Vax's sobbing at the end is so heartbreaking. Vex's death was that sudden in the campaign too. Completely devastating. The trap was one that kills you outright, no saves, if it drops your HP to zero. Percy made his dex save, Vex didn't, and they all had low HP from the fight. I knew it was coming when I saw the episode title, and it still wrecked me.

Kash is a human life domain cleric, who worships a...strange, CE demigod who has power over life and death. Will Friedle had a weird story idea lol. Also, Adam! I think what made me cry is what happens to the twins, if you KNOW then you know especially containing the twins but seeing how Vax have such a connection in game and animation it hit hard. He relied on his sister and always had been there with her but then she was taken from him when he wasn't there.

@@foulrot I think maybe Kash knows resurrection magic and Pike does not. He will try to resurrect Vex at which point Pike will also learn. But it will fail because the Matron of Ravens and then Vax will bargain with her for his sisters life.
