I am in the camp that A Link to the Past was better than Ocarina. Breath of the Wild was like the breath of fresh air that revitalized my love for Zelda, and A Link Between Worlds showed me that Nintendo can return to their roots without messing with what makes a Zelda game great.

Wow, I just remembered how Arin complained about how hard the Fire Temple was when he was being dense. Then he complained about people calling the Water Temple hard when it was "easy." He even said he'd beat it in less episodes than the Fire Temple, a feat he only accomplished with a guide by that point.

I'll always remember renting it at Video Update for my tenth birthday in 98 and spending the whole weekend absorbed in it. I've played it over 40 times since and I had a great time during these streams and was so touched that Jirard gifted me a Twitch sub as thanks for the little help I could give him during the stream (dizarky here!). Back when I was a teen and BEFORE the 3DS got its price drop, I made the decision to spend the $300 CAD on Ocarina of Time 3D and the system. Yes it was expensive and YES the game was just a port.... but I didn't care. The game just looked so darn GOOD graphically- still to this day one of the nicest looking 3DS titles- and I was excited to replay one of the great classics from my childhood. And even though the 3DS would shortly after get its price cut and Ocarina of Time was the only game I had or wanted at the time... it was so worth it. This is a fantastic remake and a legendary experience if you haven't yet given it a go. :)

I recently replayed the original with my son. It was his first time seeing the game, and he LOVED it. He still asks me lore questions months later. I have often asked myself about why this game is so good. Yes, it's well designed and well paced. It's an addition to the list of smash successes by Nintendo in early 3D game design. The graphics at the time were eye-popping. It was one of the first games that I played that made me feel like I was whisked away to an adventure in a real place; a place I could freely explore and exist in on my own terms (sort of). But I think what really strikes at the core of how the game impacted us as people is the timeless journey from boyhood to manhood. I recently made this connection reading a book regarding male psychology. Link begins as a child in the forest, under the father figure of the Deku Tree. He's the kid that's different; the one without a fairy. We all see ourselves as different in some way from those around us. The father figure Deku Tree summons Link and initiates him on a journey, not just to save Hyrule, but to find his strength and courage. He doesn't just verbally call him to this journey. Link has to pass a test of courage by slaying the monster within the Deku Tree. This initiation was Link's initiation into manhood by the primary father figure in his life, probably the most pivotal events in any boy's life, and sadly one that many young boys don't get to experience by no fault of their own. Link now has a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and once he forms his relationship with Zelda, he'll have his beauty to rescue. These are the fundamental pursuits of a man's heart, and the core of Link's character development. This journey of growing up and initiation into manhood involves Link literally growing up in front of our own eyes. It's not just perceived in his growth of powers and abilities; he BECOMES A MAN. Once a man, he is largely on his own. He's left with the guidance of his childhood mentors, motivated by the battle to fight, the adventure to live, and the beauty to rescue. As men, we all deeply want to know we have what it takes to slay the dragon. Link has that confidence, which makes him such an attractive character. It's this initiation into manhood that all boys long for, and it is a fundamental truth since the dawn of humanity. That's what makes Ocarina of Time so timeless, that literally any young boy can identify with Link on a deep, primal level. Nearly all Zelda games share this characteristic, but none struck the nail on the head quite like Ocarina of Time.

Humza Khan really? I’m saying just that. I should have put in that the 3ds version is better by a long shot. Their is no way the original is better. I’m just saying, by the time the game is done with, the graphic look unappealing. And if their unappealing, people would not want to play it, the game is amazing however playing the 3ds version will give you the better version of it. The graphics don’t matter. However you have the draw the line and at this point it’s looks like puke... link to the past is older then oot and look just as great as ever. In fact, I like link to the past more then this because of several reasons, like waiting and how the spirit of the games is. And also the text speed. It’s horrible.

Thank you so much for making this! I was in the dark about the 3ds re-master and couldn't remember exactly what masterquest was about because I last played OOT back in the late cretacious. The horseback archery challenge at Gerudo's Fortress was absolutely ball-busting to defeat!

Having been born in 1987, every Zelda release up to Majoras Mask was basically a life milestone it seems. From my first experience watching my Dad and Uncle playing the original (which also happens to be my second earliest life memory) to beating LTTP all on my own with my Dad proudly watching. Then came Oot came out. Looking back now I feel like it really resonated with me in how I was at a time in my young life when the real world was just starting to open up, and I feel it reflected in that game with the jump to a (for then) massive open 3d world. I loved spending evenings exploring every bit of it after a full day of doing the same in the real world around where I lived. And then, (almost eerily...) MM came out as I was just starting middle school, a point where I felt that everything around me felt so strange yet familiar. Like most of my old friends were still around, but many dynamics were changing/changed. There was a lot of sadness for me at the time also due to my parents divorce, and MM mirrored a lot of those feelings to me. After that I didn’t get a GameCube until it was already on its way out, and while I love WW dearly, it didn’t really reverberate with me like the others had and was actually the last Zelda game I played to the end, sadly. Anyways sorry for the worlds longest KZbin comment, but it was nice to reflect for me, thanks for reading. Ps I would so hug the crap out of Miyamoto right now!

This was nice, a good review with a nice rundown of the differences and history. And as always some thoughtful reflections on your experience, which really brings it all to life. I will say I do like a bit more clarity between sections, what you're focusing on discussing; this seemed to blend it together, not bad itself, but... maybe I liked the sense of progression? ^_^ But I hope you're not dealing with too much pressure, because you doing you is almost certainly going to give everyone the best experience. Thanks for all the hard work you and the team put in!

I was 12 years old and my brother was 11 when we first played this game. It really WAS a growing experience in my life. We beat games so fast that our parents bought this hoping it would take us longer to beat so we wouldn't bug them for a new game. One of my fondest memories of my childhood was waking up before everyone else, turning on our N64, turning the volume way down as to not wake anyone up and then waking up my brother to take turns playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. There was no internet so figuring out the puzzles, dungeons and finding the collectables really made us change how we appreciate video games. It really cemented our love for all video games. Good, bad, silly, scary and everything in between. I really couldn't imagine my life without video games. I'm 31 now and I'm forever going to be a gamer

I grew up w/ the original, bought every rendition as the years went by, and have loved every struggle to complete it time and again. That being said, this episode was a fair, critical analysis from a true fan. I learned new things about certain sections of the 3D version and it's because I clicked on this video! Egoraptor proved he never learned how to block w/ the sheild and straight up ignored signs and NPC hints thanks to his impatience and stupidity. He still hasn't finished MM on Game Grumps, b/c of these same issues. Thank you for giving this game the time and attention OoT deserves and for not being an Arin Hanson.

I played this game with my mom once. She thought she could play games like this because she was just getting used to more than one "fire button." She'd play Link to the past rather well. I thought Zelda was a good starter for her because you didn't need fast reflexes like Mario games. Ocarina of Time was also easier for her due to the "Z targeting." She didn't like having to fuss with the camera targeting made that much better. Playing the remake on 3DS was bittersweet, I lost both my parents in 2017 I didn't get a 3DS until much later. I did enjoy that game along with Majora's Mask. Just wasn't the same. What I wouldn't give to getting on the couch with mom and dad after ordering a Pizza. Popping in the N64 cart and playing these games. I can still hear the "ohhhh" from my parents when I first jumped from the top of the Deku tree to break the spider web at the bottom. I miss those days, but got to keep going forward.
