I said it on the original video, but they are the extremes of the elemental weather conditions. Articuno is Blizzards, Zapdos is Thunder/Electric Storms, Moltres is Heatwave/Drought, and finally the Trio Master, Lugia, is Monsoons/Heavy Rain. Each portray the most extreme weather that can happen, with their combined nature balancing each other out to create more normal weather when living near each other.

The simple explanation is it's a common motif in RPGs to have the three elements of fire, ice, and electricity as a trio, which can be traced all the way back to the original first edition of Dungeons and Dragons, in which there were fire, cold, and lighting damage.
