I think people should be far more cautious with their usage of the term "male gaze" as there is quite a lot of historical, academic, sociological, and political baggage and weight on such a term as it has at least somewhat, been used more often to describe the way in which Women of Colour, Black Women, Native American Women, East, West, South-Asian, South-East Asian, Non-Christian Women, and generally other disinfranchised, marginalized, assimilated, and opressed women have been depicted and represented in film and cinema. That being said however, I still do agree with your statement and everyone elses!

Excellent video! It got me thinking about the Nerflix Castlevania version of Carmila- she represents the anxiety that a victim gains power to victimize her abusers. She is monstrous because the violence she metes out is "disproportionate". She will take everything from the evil old men who enacted violence on her and then kill them. She'll do that to all the men (because it's men who are the kings, the land owners, the wealth holders). These mortal men have no power over her, and no power to negotiate. Men, knowing the violence and oppression it takes to get and maintain power, fear having those beneath them rise above them- because from their point of view, why wouldn't the same be done to them? Vampirism in the Castlevania show is also less a symbol for carnal desire and more about what Lenore said about power, though.
@francisdrake7297
@francisdrake7297 2 жыл бұрын
And we also have a couple of lesbians vampires, which ironically isn't really symbolic of anything except lesbian vampires, it's just a nice couple. That or I'm too blind to symbolism in movies and I missed it, which wouldn't surprise me.

I can’t blame her though. Most people would enact out such violence if allowed to their abusers.

"Carmilla" from the Netflixvania series was first of all nowhere near the actual character from the book although Lenore comes somewhat closest though and also bewarned that the series was written by a misogynist edgelord with alot of allegations attached to him so it's not recommended at all.

I kinda just want a nice, a little shmoopy, romance between two women- maybe where a female vampire turns the human woman after an attack that leaves her on the brink of death, and through the time they spend together, with the elder vampire teaching the new, they fall in love. And have a happy ending, goddamit! No dead lesbian vampires in my story! I’d also like to see a lesbian (or bisexual, any wlw) romance that really focuses on their love through the centuries, from the “they’re just roommates Boston marriage” type of way they have to portray themselves in the past, through to marriage equality and getting married in the present. With excellent costuming, of course. Because bad, inaccurate costuming always pulls me out of a story completely. As much as I loved the narrative of Little Women 2019, the fact that the costuming was so godawful meant I couldn’t focus on the story, I was always just thinking “why does she have a bloody side ponytail? Where are the crinolines? Why hasn’t the fashion changed in the last decade? And where on earth are the bonnets?? Give me my bloody bonnets!” How it’s won an Oscar, I don’t know. Actually I do know- it should have won in another category, but the establishment is misogynist, and so it for the costuming Oscar as a kind of pity win. Which took away a costuming Oscar from a movie that actually deserved it- like Rocketman. I have feelings on costuming, obviously. Which is why my lesbian vampire romance through the centuries story would have impeccable costuming, of course.

The Carmila web series does do the happy-ending lesbian vampire story - although Laura never becomes a vampire. The ending is a bit more creative than that (though with some plot holes). "The Gilda Stories" is a book that also features lesbian vampires who at least have the potential to be happy together (they have relationship challenges the same as humans, and it is hard for conflicts not to come up over literal centuries!). The Vampire Book Club covered that one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipzFg2Vnf72MpdE Also, this is a gay vampires thing not a lesbian vampires thing...but I love the central relationship in the anime/manga "Seraph of the End". Just watch this "first bite" scene and tell me it isn't the sweetest thing you've ever seen in a vampire story! kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2qYnYCFptySeNE (Context: Yu has believed for 4 years that his childhood friend Mika is dead. Mika actually got turned into a vampire, and he is desperate to find Yu and tell him that the humans were using them both as experimental subjects. But Yu has always hated vampires, so Mika is nervous about their reunion...which is what makes Yu's actual response so heartwarming.) But I agree - more mainstream happy lesbian vampires with great costuming!

Oh it's interesting seeing your read of Bit! I guess my takeaway was that it was commentary on like... I don't know how to word this properly, but like a particular flavour of pop feminism that banks on being intersectional, but fundamentally only cares about other minority groups where they intersect with womanhood. So, in my own experiences, people who only care about ableism when it impacts women, or fatphobia when it impacts women, or transphobia when trans women and *some* non-binary people can be treated as adjacent to cis womanhood and trans men or non-binary people who don't fit a particular standard can be ignored or dismissed. I suppose both our reads were about men's anxiety about feminism, but in different ways

I love the idea of using BOTH lesbian and bisexual interpretations on lady vampires! I love Dracula's Daughter (1936). Although it's very obvious that Countess Marya is seeking out the help of the psychiatrist (I forget his name) in an attempt to mentally free herself from her vampiric (and sexual) desire for women, it also seems to me that she is somewhat romantically attracted to him as well. I think that reading this relationship solely through a bisexual lens is incomplete, since her genuine friendly relationship with him is abandoned for pursuing his (unknown to her except for via association) fiancee to make her into a captive vampire lover, which is perhaps more properly suited to a lesbian interpretation. Because of this, I love your idea of using both interpretations to complement each other in interpreting possible meanings. I think there's some dissonance regarding the relationship that the countess has with the psychiatrist; he reminds me of the Laura of the Carmilla novella. Despite the Countess passionately confessing to him that she is tormented by her subversive desires, he remains strangely naive and doesn't suspect her of either vampirism or lesbianism until she makes an attack on his female lover. Although he arrives to save his fiancee, it's the Countess's male servant who kills the Countess (with an arrow, no less), and like Laura, the psychiatrist is a passive character in the vampire's demise. It's also interesting that a contingency of the Hays Code was that the Countess (like her father before her in 1931) was not permitted to have male victims, because it was considered too threateningly emasculating to show a woman overpowering men at the time, whether as a sexual or physical aggressor. I wonder, if that restraint hadn't been placed on the production, if there would be more explicit romantic/sexual tension between her and the psychiatrist.

See, I love this video but as a lesbian, Carmilla is very important to me and in the original text I do believe her to be a lesbian. I know monosexuality isn't the only option but it is really nice to have such a defining symbol of lesbianism. It does feel a bit like erasure to deny that, or maybe I misunderstood. However, this was a great video!

@@myasmith1820 Bisexual people in gay relationships are because their marriages and rights can be taken away. Bisexual people in straight relationships are not because they can still marry their partners and have similar rights. There are absolutely no rights a straight woman with a man has that a bi woman with a man doesn't have. And before you name some niche example of name calling, please refer to the fact that I specifically stated systemic oppression, aka actual legal barriers.

I don't think she was denying Carmillas identity as a lesbian in the original text, but pointing out that the lesbian vampire trope has not only been used to demonize lesbianism in women but bisexuality in them as well. It was less about the specific character and what she has come to represent in reclamatory readings of the story and more about how the trope has been used specifically against bi women.

@@Officialboss3000 There are "bisexual people in straight relationships" who have been fired for their sexuality, who have lost custody of their children (likely to their straight ex-spouse), and probably some who have faced discrimination in healthcare and housing. I feel like you're conflating bisexuals in straight relationships with closeted bisexuals.

I just want to say I love your channel and your content and your video essays are just phenomenal, and you yourself have great energy. I'm a bi trans guy but I'm still in denial over that, for now I identify as homoflexible because my precarious pre transition situation makes me feel very uncomfortable with being assumed due to my masculine presentation but denial to reject all things feminine, to be a butch lesbian and I'm more attracted to men than women it seems. Sexuality is complex. But your channel is a breath of fresh air.

What a gorgeous video essay! Such brilliant analysis. Was looking for lesbian vampire films and stumbled upon this. Liked and subscribed! I was wondering if you know any lesbian vampires that enter through the window in any of these films? I’m making a video essay on the trope of people entering through windows. The only one I’ve found so far where a lesbian vampire enters a window is “the vampire lovers” (1970) which you've included in this video. I haven’t watched many lesbian vampire movies yet, keen to watch some of these! Thanks for the amazing video essay!

WAIT! The "fish without a bicycle" exists in English too? I thought, the idiom comes from the homonym of "scales" and "shack" in German, because a fish needs a bicycle to put in its shack, which is obviously nonsensical... Seems like I was wrong :D Nvm, I'll keep watching now
