In the words of that great Frank Sinatra song, That's Life! -- "Each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race..." That's all we can do. The only thing that makes it palatable is knowing that EVERYONE goes thru it. Hearing that you're human too helps many people, Chris. Soldier On!

"It is what it is" Bad stuff happens to everyone. What makes the difference is how an individual deals with it. People often piss me off. The older I get the more I realize how time is the most valuable thing I have and how I spend it is very important. I try to think in moments of anger to say to myself "It is what it is" which basically means to me, it's not worth getting upset about it and I need to put my time and energy into something that I can make a difference on. Have a great day🌻😎🌻

I have not use those words "It is what it is" in awhile. Things that are happening in my life are turning into those words. But I am aim to keep going. Life is short. You don't have time to dwell on everything little thing and trying to fix it. Sometimes you just have to let it go. Thanks Chris for sharing your message. 🙂❤️

Absolutely relatable, Chris. I say these words all the time “It is what it is”. Developing critical thinking, lowering expectations and stoic responses really help with “the suck”. Sometimes just getting through the day is enough self care. Thank you so much for your helpful words and approach to struggling.

Some things said just can’t be unsaid. But there is still a lesson in it. Confide your very personal thoughts to those whom you trust and not the media. Some thoughts should be kept to yourself. But not those thoughts. That’s why it’s good to seek therapy, which you are doing. So in essence you ARE making things better. Perhaps we can reframe our thinking and say that “It is what We make of it.” Keep pushing, keep learning and keep carrying on Chris. That’s all any of us can do.

To me the fix is to hell with it. What has happened has happened. You can't change the past! I'm certainly not seeking approval from people especially those who are so busy seeking approval from others. The only thing/person we can make better is ourselves and hopefully inspire others along the way. Those who constantly belittle others certainly don't spend time improving themselves. They don't have time because their time is spent on others. Good luck to those 'perfect' people.

So true. In cases where people look for meaning in random or natural occurrences, they usually come up with a self-serving narrative, that may remove some pain but it’s not helpful for the future. Unless of course you’re a paisano from Naples, where everything means something and its usually bad. :-) Italian brothers know what I mean.

Not sure how to contact you but PRAY you read this… Chris please read! Your help is needed in Eatonville, Fl. This is an historically black town that is slowly being sold from under the residence. In 12 days a land developer is going to buy the last 100 acres of land from the Orange County school system even though the city voted against the sale. I saw this on the show CBS Sunday Morning (3/19/2023) Episode 12. I know Florida is a red state but please if you can shed more light on this we would be eternally grateful. No, I’m not a resident of the town but it’s an injustice that needs to be stopped before it happens. Your influence is wide and I know any light you can help shed on the town will help. Even though the show tried to get a statement from the developer they didn’t respond. Why should you do this? It’s an opportunity to reach more viewers to your show. They see someone cares about their situation. It also shows that the racism in this country is still alive and well it just has transformed its ugly head. PLEASE HELP!! From an ALWAYS loyal FAN🥰

The lessons come not through any literature or expression, it comes through your own insights, that you in turn (this is how I do it) can express and share. I've found that seeing life as a series of lessons has provided me with meaning and a sense of potential improvement. Life becomes how you view it. My mother's suffering stopped, which was one good thing about her death. There always is, if you dare to believe, feel and experience - and trust your own insights! (For example, I loved reading "The unmistakable touch of Grace" by Cheryl Richardson, that has some exercises after each chapter. I did them all, simply applying her presented perspective on my own life. Not to do, but to see and reframe your story in a way that provides you with a sense of purpose and faith. It changed my life in the best way.) Going out in the freezing rain was to help someone who needed something you had in the truck, so you did it to help that person, which gives you good "karma" or to be helped yourself when you need. And, when people leave you, it's for you to grow and attract other people into your life that will make you feel better. However, you can not know how much better you will feel, until you do!

It’s the snake & the saw lesson. The haters snake wrap themselves around the saw and they tighten the grip & squeeze tighter & tighter & they bleed & squeeze, tighten until it kills them where they just could of let the saw go & move on in the first place! I can relate the go to truck story do to Walton. (I use my knee as an excuse) The fact you did it should give you great relief even though you were wet. Time for a reward like good cigar or perfect iced cola. Thank you for your candid testimony.

'It is what it is'- Used to annoy the living crap outta me as if it were a brush-off... Especially when I first stopped doing drugs and drinking... How come there's no 'It ain't what it ain't'? 🤔 Anyway, as the opening line to "The Road Less Travelled'' by M. Scott Peck goes...'Life is difficult'... Glass1/2 full, 1/2 empty or broken into pieces on the ground with water everywhere (which happens a lot more as I get older I must admit) Disappointment and regret are as much a part of life as a child's hug or a kiss from a loved one...The Yin has to have the Yang...The up the down...the great experience the miserable experience...If not we'd all be automatons living either in continuous misery or retreaded bliss...Both would lose their importance, and it would just be a societal numbness that we called 'existing'... Like the Byrds tune "Turn Turn Turn" (which the idea was stolen from biblical texts so it's been around forever and then some)... Howdy to you and yours from up the road away in Saratoga...BTW I sure as hell hope you're going to keep your 'Project' going as well man...

Chris, I've been a long-time viewer of your shows, and I'm a huge fan. The ideas you've discussed remind me of a well-known passage from a book "...and acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation - some fact of my life - unacceptable to me. I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake...".. I can clearly see the passion in your presentations, and you're an intelligent person. Keep up the great work, and remember to keep things simple, my friend!

I strive to approach difficult things in my life with the AA Serenity Prayer in mind. Although I am neither religious nor an alcoholic it speaks to me. "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." The hardest one for me to come by seems to be the wisdom part.

I feel like, the idea there is no lesson and the world is grit, and there is no saving grace etc is not a correct outlook. No lesson is a harsh non reality- because we often cannot anticipate the future- lol and sometimes lessons take many many years to fully understand. It's like denying with age comes wisdom- when you focus on getting what you want- (the lesson) but are unwilling to wait. I disagree with fatalistic views as it's not always based in realistic situations- but selfish ones 😁 Keep up the good work

Loads to unpack.... But, in my experience, their is Always a lesson. It's a process. Whether in our waking life or in our sleep/dream state. We are always being challenged to use the tools, at our disposal. Sometimes it's easier, sometimes it's harder. When tackling a project, Gramma would say, "Do the thing ya hate to do the most, First, and get it over with! It's half the battle!" If there truly is nothing to be done about a tough situation, at least we can chalk it up to an experience, leave with a bittersweet memory that will eventually fade, or seek to find the upside. (there is Always an upside and a downside, to Everything!) Maybe the issue becomes a part of conversation with others, who may sympathize and share their wisdom. Our brains are still learning, with or without us. It's about the connections, sometimes. Like you, being on here, to talk about this, with us. Someone right now is thinking, "Shoot! That's me, too." or "I'm NOT alone." or maybe "It's only human." Like me, I don't wanna run out to the truck on this slush falling rainy day in Chicagoland. Mainly because this put-back together, ragdoll body of mine can't afford to fall on her kisser!! But, when it's an "I Must" situation, I resign to embracing it. Plan, visualize, prepare, inspire myself.... somehow... usually with music and Git-r-dun! Ya Never know what can happen when ya step out your door. (It's a Lot easier, tho, when I remind myself that a few inches of Chicago rain/slush beats a few FEET of Chicago Lake Effect snow!😳) We gotta trick ourselves, our minds, into focusing on the Upside and maybe, hopefully, some good can possibly come from it. Things happen and sometimes we don't know the Why! Sometimes Our presence, our friendly smile, or a simple few words make a difference, to others, along the way. And, others may do the same for us. Sometimes the delays, the bumps in the road ARE a blessing in disguise, as well. I read about a man, some years ago. Frustrated, mad, stressed, rushing... his kids acted up one morning, while he was trying to leave for work. The wall phone rang for him, as he was walking out the door. He got to the train staion late and had to wait for the next one. He was already late, while running to his high rise office job when he broke a shoe lace. He had to step into a shop for an emergency pair. Because he did, he was, now, 20 minutes late for work. And THAT'S when an airplane smashed into the Twin Tower, in NYC.. the tower he was meant to be IN! He said, afterwards, that he no longer felt angered when his kids acted up, just being kids. That he would take Every call, that came. That when the unexpected and inconvenient things occurred, he wouldn't stress it, so much. Had these sliding doors not closed on him, he would have, likely, Not lived on. Sometimes, ya just don't know WHY something is going so wrong. (Fyi: "Sliding Doors" -GOOD Movie!) I feel bad for people who get Seriously depressed by gloomy days. I enjoy sunny days, gardening, a nice walk... but, I also appreciate and embrace the rain. It IS good for plantlife and animals. It keeps me grounded inside, for the most part, to focus within, Guilt-Free! The rain also reminds me of my favorite aunt, late aunt, a golfer who competed on her days off. Except on her rainy days off, she spent with ME! The rain reminds me of the early 70's. Maybe not, but, as a kid, it seemed to rain and snow a lot more in the 70s! Am I wrong?🤔 Anyway, during the time that we have Northerly high winds and rain, some Great Lakers go outside on purpose TO the Lake's edge, for wave watching! Refreshing powerful, humbling..!! I'll never ride on motorcycles again, but, I find a taste of the exhilaration, from time to time. Mother Earth is powerful and she runs on Her schedule, Not by our human schedules. Now, That IS, what it IS! Don't sweat the BS. Let it roll off your shoulders. Most people find it hard to leave a job and mentally switch it off when they get home. To Not think about work until they clock back in, again. Doctors worry, contractors plan, mechanics tinker in their sleep..... YOU are a Man of Information! How to Shut that off and enjoy your free time?!? IDK. You have been conditioned throughout your adult career to analyze facts, ask questions, seek answers, debate the issues, define, explain, hash it all out.... how do you compartmentalize that kind of a JOB From your personal, every day life? You are hard enough on yourself, to begin with! You bear the weight of others' false accusations and lies. As too many of us do. People who are jealous, vindictive, cruel... want to pi§§ on your Cheerios BECAUSE you Are a Good, hardworking, successful, Family man. LET them wallow in their misery and Spite. There are no perfect sets of answers in Life but, I do know that we can't let others break us down. You don't have to live with their ignorance when every day life is tough enough. You have to like yourself enough to say, "I'm okay. Not perfect but, okay." Nobody is Perfect! There's No such thing. Thanks for the talks. It is good to be reminded, informed, advised and inspired. I admire your work and what you and your team are doing for others. Tnx!😉 btw... when I was in college I was given a Benjamin Franklin leather bound day planner. Posh and expensive compared to my hand drafted calendars, lists, and makeshift notebook planner... it was daunting and intimidating to think that I Should be detailing my every move, of every day, in this massive book! Truth is, the use of such a tool, naturally varies from one person to the next. But, I could never envision ol Ben using ONLY that pretty mint green paper, with fancy font, all neatly collected in a metal binder... like the one I was gifted. I moved past the stiff structure that the printing company used and began to learn about the Ben Franklin Method and the method to the man's madness. He even used a symbol for procrastination.."->" I realized, through reading the pages of "How-to's", according to Ben, that he was more Humanly flawed than legend let's on. And that was Okay! Nobody is perfect. At times, we may have to work a little harder to keep ourselves in tune. Afterall, we are only human!

I agree that Everything may not be a lesson … but in my experience everything is a learning experience … even if all we get is assessing and taking accountability for how we responded to any given situation. Accepting and releasing is a strategy that can help us become more resilient. It boils down to being mindful about our choices. NLP uses pattern interrupt strategies as a tool that can help us change how we choose to view any given situation. For instance, when we have to do something we don’t like, by interrupting or changing the way we view it from a negative window, we can choose to look at it instead through a positive window. In other words, instead of feeling the dread of doing something, we can choose to find a different way to look at it; one that makes us more enthusiastic and motivated to engage in the action. How we respond/take action is an ongoing learning experience. I do enjoy these couch chats. Very thought provoking 👍

@chrisccuomo I can relate only too well to your thoughts…. How do you get over the loss/death of your little son? The pastor said: one day you’ll understand! Till now 40 years later I still don’t get it! Naturally you carry on , but you’re not a better mother to your littlest daughter because you’re broken inside… and then my husband died twenty years ago,…. Mows the present, get over it, it’s all in the past, I carry on, but where’s my life motivation, yes it is what it is, but it’s shit!!! And for your loss, and I feel it so much with you, a big big consoling hug ! I wish I had someone to give me one! It makes you feel embraced and understood! How I miss that

trying to thrive in a situation thats impossible is impossible....you are right, you truly should only be in survival mode at that point...get through the day, then the week....move on.... Great saying, I think by Churchill...." IF YOU FIND YOURSELF WALKING IN HELL, JUST KEEP WALKING"

I have trouble saying that in relationships. I tend to feel like there is a way for ppl to understand each other if they would only communicate their feelings better. I don’t give up until I feel like all options have been exhausted. We can’t control others, but we can look at our own behavior. If I’ve done all that I can and they won’t compromise or see my pov then I don’t feel bad saying it is what it is.

Aaah Chris. In all this craziness, I thought of you. I'm not taking the piss. Had no idea about your public L, as I am not American. Truthfully, I enjoyed watching your segments on CNN and your recent interview with Tyler cohen, (Excellent interview by the way.) Forgetting to add YOU to my channels. Really enjoyed this, you haven't lost the qualities that makes yours an interesting perspective. Glad to find you again.

Note: My opinion is based on this video and the one where you're taking a walk. Correct. " It is what it is." It was relative to your time on CNN and now your life after CNN. I wasn't aware that you took losing that job as hard as you did, but you seem to have picked yourself up, trying to move on and making the best of it. In my opinion, outside looking in, you're wayy too hard on yourself. What's up with that?? You definitely have the gift of gab. Lol. We enjoy watching and listening to you. But... have you no idea how many people look up to you?? How many people you've inspired? How many strangers that care about you?? It's ok to aim high, but d***. We don't care so much for the fall so much as we do the rise. Success not only pertains to our professional lives, it also pertains to our personal lives. You can't have one without the other and even if you try, you'll only get so far before it catches up to you. I appreciate the transparency, and you're right, life does suck sometimes and yes we "all" can relate. Trust me. Maybe this loss is actually your gain but you just can't see because you're giving too much air to the loss. You have your health, your family and whatta ya know, another job. And a d*** good one at that. Losing that job has given you chance to do life a little different. Sure it hurt. But that pain/loss has allowed you to see your real power and purpose. Something you might not have otherwise. Stay focused on what's most important and as they say, "let your haters be your motivators." And remember, Life's a Sport; survive it's obstacles and live to talk/laugh about it.

I have to learn to accept “Sometimes, it is what it is…” especially with my Master’s Thesis data handling and writing. I have to accept that I am unable to work as long or faster than what I mentally and physical am able to do. I push those limits, and I am burnt for the next day, thus losing that study time. Oh the joy of being neurodiverse with a half a tank of gas everyday to run on. (4 hours vs 8 Hours). So am trying to live by that dreamed up by Tim Ferris workday in an institution that believes we should work 24/7 on our project. It is hazing in the university. They went through, thus it should be just as bad for their grad students.

Love listening to you. You make me laugh and think. The title on this? As long as you are on this earth you have free will therefore choice. With choice there is always a lesson to be learned call them teachable moments. I am irritated with you here in that you make decisions out of frustration or anger that create lessons which you refuse to acknowledge as lessons. Ice cold rain...no shoes...no coat...no nothing? Why would you take a chance like that with your health...again? If you don't see the lesson in that, we have a problem.

Chris, it's such a sad state of affairs when people (mainly men) would rather take a gun and kill a bunch of people (then usually themselves) rather than take the weeks or months to figure out what is really happening deep within themselves. Introspection is not valued in modern culture but it is SO NECESSARY for change to occur. Life is filled with dead ends and detours not of our own making and often that we didn't see coming. So, do we grow, change and adapt or do we die and take others with us? How does a beautiful butterfly come into being? Through a slow, painful process...so to for us...adapt or die.
