There are things I'm wondering about considering the book and the quill. - Will they recognise a muggle-born child with magic who wasn't born in the UK/Ireland but moved there before their eleventh birthday? - What if a muggle-born only visits Britain before returning to their original country? - What about muggle-born children who move out of the UK/Ireland before they are old enough for Hogwarts? - How do the book and the quill keep track of this?
@chromeshellking2 жыл бұрын
Id imagine interational wizards would be like oh hey you have a child who could attend if you are so inclined but Id imagine that the home country has the first chance. Remember Draco did brag about being a serious candidate for Drumstrang so think of it like being out of bounds on school choice. You apply and they opt to either allow you to attend or reject you.
@Drademdar2 жыл бұрын
But Draco isn't muggle-born, and with his family's connections, it wouldn't be difficult for him to be allowed to attend other magical schools. I did consider if there would be some international register that kept track of all muggle-born as they moved around in the world. But the Wiki for the 'Book of Admittance' says, "As this record contained the name and birthdate of every magical child, it was used to tell who was eligible to attend Hogwarts, and when. Every year, Professor Minerva McGonagall checked the book and sent acceptance letters by owl to children who were close to turning eleven, letting them know of their place at the school." In other words, that book is the only register for all muggle-born magical children from the UK/Ireland. And since it records both 'birth' and 'the magical' abilities of the child, I then ask again: What if a child is born outside of the UK/Ireland but moves there later in life? Since their birth isn't in the book because they were born outside of the UK/Ireland, would this child even be registered?
@morningsun64102 жыл бұрын
@@Drademdar in this very quote it says "Every magical child who was eligible to attend Hogwarts" - nothing about UK/Ireland. Eligibility may not be based on the place one was born, but lots of other aspects. What aspects? Probably will have to ask J. K. Rowling. You seem to not really listen to the video. The names got to the book not by birth, but by the time one shows their magical potential. Neville's name was written when he was 8 yo. So it could be any time before 11yo. And I'd give it a guess, that the magical potential and ability to speak English was more important than the place of birth.
@Drademdar2 жыл бұрын
@@morningsun6410 I did listen to the video, and I do remember that he mentioned that the book didn't accept Neville until he was eight years old. But he was also born in Britain, so the book and the quill were aware of him. They only disagreed on his magical abilities. "It is assumed (though not confirmed) that this book only records births of magical children who have displayed magical abilities and have a residence in Great Britain and Ireland." Although it's not proven that the book only found children in the UK/Ireland, I don't see a reason why it would seek further. Firstly, these artefacts were probably created by the founders of Hogwarts. Why would they care about children outside of the UK and Ireland? Hogwarts is a Scottish wizarding school who accept primarily students residing in the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. Secondly, if it did register every child in the world, why place it at Hogwarts, where only the professors there could read it? That would be putting a lot of control and power into the people of Hogwarts. I doubt the other magical schools would be happy about this, especially considering the rivalry they have with each other. It would make more sense to put these artefacts under the control of the International Confederation of Wizards if that was the case. And there's no point asking Rowling herself. She may be a good storyteller, but her world-building is at best above average. She seems to have habitually added things to support the story without thinking too deeply about why and how. And that's what happened with the book and the quill as well. They were likely added as an explanation of how magical children were found with no concerns about how it affected the rest of her world. Don't get me wrong; I love the Harry Potter universe. But there are a lot of cracks and illogical things in the world Rowling built.

Notice that the book and quill also have to somehow find out not only about magical child, but also about his/her name. How is that possible? What is the name? Is that a word in any official register? Is that the name in the head of the child? Or in the heads of parents? If the first thing - how was it possible ca. ten centuries ago when the modern offices didnt't exist? If the second or third option - what if the official name of the child was e.g. "Nuclaus", but everyone had been using let's say "Nick". How does the quill know that the name is actually Niclaus and not Nick? Does it mean the book and quill had possibility to read thousands of minds? And a big plothole. It is technically impossible to write the name of a child exactly when it is born. Because most time in that time it has no name given yet. --- But going back to Marauders' Map - I don't know which option would be more impressive: The one when they replicated all magical properties of the book and quill on their own... Many things that a child can perform would be to most eyes indistinguishable from magic or simply non-magical talents. To use three examples well outside the zone: 1 - Bruce Banner used his genius as a very small boy to build up a complex construction set to a degree well beyond his years. His abusive father Brian (NOT David!) smashed the set in a drunken rage, declaring the boy must be a mutant, affected by his own work on the Manhattan Project. 2 - On an episode of The Flintstones, Fred dreamed that Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm became stellar musicians and singers - despite not yet being able to talk. Inside the dream, a doctor declared they could do this because no one had ever told them they couldn't. Bit of a stretch, but there is a bit of RL psychology in there as well. 3 - In Dragon Ball, Goku's granddaughter Pan could easily fly as an infant, even able to survive on the edge of space. Yet by the time she was roughly five, she had to re-learn this ability consciously, and under the duress of an enemy attack. Hermione for her part could have simply aced all her studies by accessing unknown magic to read her regular-school texts at warp-speed, and it was just shrugged off as smarts.

The "connection to magic through a squib" has always been an interesting theory. Personally, that could easily explain some of the Muggleborns, and Hermione could easily be related to that Granger person Slughorn mentioned in the sixth book as a result. But I am of the idea, that, while some muggleborns are related to a squib in some manner, other muggleborns truly are magical despite no magic in the bloodline. As for getting to Diagon Alley, as we saw with Tom Riddle, Dumbledore offered to go with, but Tom wanted to do it himself. So the option is there for an escort to help show them around, same for getting onto the train, I would assume. There are bigger questions about muggleborns, and their families that I want answers to though: Could a muggleborn's parents have their fireplace connected to the floo network? Would they be allowed to work in the magical world, earning Galleons Sickles and Knuts, rather than having to exchange muggle currency for wizard currency? Would all that require passing of the W.O.M.B.A.T.? Would the ministry of magic even allow a muggle to sit and take the W.O.M.B.A.T.? Would anyone even hire a muggle (Auther Weasley not being counted here), to work for them?

I’d be curious to find out whether the death eaters attempted to have that book in any fashion modified or even confiscated and destroyed when they took over Hogwarts in 1997. Wouldn’t put it past them to pull something like that if they could, considering their determination to subjugate everybody that didn’t fall right in line with them, most Muggle Borns only being beat out by Harry Potter as their own personal public enemies number one. A major part of how Harry’s education began is how Hagrid is the one who informed him what he was when he didn’t know it before he turned 11. I have often relished how Harry reflected on it in the events of Harry Potter and the half blood prince when he learned of Dumbledore divulging to the future Lord Voldemort that’s what he was, how Tom Riddle was almost immediate to accept it. Harry reflected he didn’t believe it at first when he was informed by Hagrid he was a wizard.

Since it's up to the head or deputy head to send out letters, I imagine Snape left it up to McGonagall to sort out, and McGonagall did not dare send letters to muggle-borns unless she could help them trick inquirers into believing they were at least half-blood. But I imagine a lot of 11 year olds got their letters before Dumbledore's death. It sounds like a cluster disaster to deal with if you were concerned with their safety. A couple of interesting implications of the quill and book. First of all, I'm sure the Ministry would be itching to get their hands on them as we know that they can detect where magic is performed, but not who by. The quill and book are significantly more powerful than whatever they have. Second, the fact no one knows (or admits to knowing) how the quill and book work, means no other magical schools in the world have anything like them, which means most muggleborns in the world are never discovered and live their whole lives not knowing they are magical.

I wonder how things work for transfers, like Natsai Onai in the newest game. Is it like, as soon as the book notices this kid is in its catchment area for X amount of time, it registers them? Or does it register all magical people all over the world, but letters are only sent to people in a certain area? Or do transferring students just get handled separately (in the "old fashioned" way from before the book)?

I like to think that someone, probably McGonagall, broke into the tower and hid the book and quill when Voldemort seized power, thereby protecting as best she could the Muggle-born witches and wizards who were about to be in extreme danger from Voldemort's regime. Also, since this book only seems to cover magical children born in the British Isles, the question arises of how they get information on people not native to Britain. For example, say you were a magical child born in another country who was adopted by a nonmagical British family.

Well, the video did mention that Neville wasn't written down until he was 8, so presumably a child born elsewhere, then brought to Britain would eventually display magic that the book would pick up, unless the book observes immigration laws or something. Harry was likely written down when he was born, but SS/PS mentioned he did have several random magical occurrences throughout his childhood. His hair grew back overnight whenever Petunia gave him a horrible haircut, he found himself inexplicably on the roof of his childhood school when he was chased by Dudley's gang, he vanished the glass around the snake's enclosure at the zoo, etc.

Because assuming Credence's foster mother Mary Barebones would have burnt any letters he received, surely somebody from Ilvermorny would have tried to contact him directly and tell him about his magical roots like Hagrid did with Harry. @MeyaRoseGirl Жыл бұрын
It's never been explained, but we do know that magical ability is genetic. Squibs and muggleborns seem like a contradiction to that, but they're actually not, if you think about other genetic traits. A recessive gene, like red hair, can seem to disappear from a family, but then a flaming red haired child will be born making people wonder if Mom was fooling around with the postman. I think for muggleborns, the magic gene went recessive many generations back, (possibly from squibs) and then this muggle couple just had the right combination of recessive genes to bring the magic back. Squibs are described as having been born into pure-blood families, so my theory is that it's a symptom of inbreeding. Do we know of an instance of a half-blood that was a squib? I can't think of any. Given that it's magic, perhaps it magically effects DNA, as well, so the gene comes in different ways. Sometimes it's dominant (a half-blood), sometimes it's recessive (a muggleborn), and too much inbreeding can destroy it (a squib). It's mentioned in Pottermore that Ilvermorny, the American wizarding school, was founded by a secret illegitimate descendant of Salazar Slytherin, but that line turned into squibs only a generation or two later. This means that Voldemort is in fact NOT the last descendant of Slytherin, and there are likely thousands of descendants of Slytherin in America, but they're mostly muggles. I would guess that occasionally a magical child is born from that line and is labeled "muggleborn" despite the fact that they are descended from Salazar Slytherin, the founder of the nonsensical pureblood ideology.
@tylerleeson3045 Жыл бұрын
What always was interesting to me. When informing Muggle-borns, how to hell do you manage to maintain the statute of secrecy? Are Unbreakable Vows performed? Would that even work on a muggle? For example: Dumbledore- how did he know the point tallies? How did he know when Rom played the chess game? How did he know when Harry and Rom were under the invisible cloak? When no one else knew?
