So we just got an insane amount of new lore. Apparently the Light emperor exists on the other side of Azeroth and he is the one that sent this Hallowfall expedition 15 years ago as he got a vision of the final battle between the light and the void in a place named Renilash. Anduin confirms this vision is the exact same he got in the cinematic.
Unexpectedly the humans were teleported to Beledar instead where they ended up trapped. Then when Sargeras' sword was plunged into Azeroth the light crystal shifted to darkness for the first time which might actually be the reason Sargeras decided to plunge the sword in the first place. The emperor is apparently very powerful and could be our ally, so let's take a look at what is this new information that we got as there is like a million and one new hints.

I'm not as deep into the lore as you are, not by a huge margin, but I've read my fair share of books about Warcraft's story. And I really am wondering how the hell nobody, like NOBODY, would have talked about a missing continent or some such. I mean ... Neltharion when he was sane? Medivh? Kadghar? Thrall the World Shaman? I like what they're trying to do, but I just can't be conviced that nobody would have known about this.

Definitely they are the enemy. There is no way they are doing twice the whole the light is evil storyline and with Turalyon it never made any sense apart from the head canons some put in him because x KZbinr wanted to do a click bait video. You have now, a new land to explore, fanatical whorsipping light empire across the sea with vast armies and those in Hallowfall who want to restablish a portal to Avaloren. They will probably be allies in midnight but will turn to be a problem by The last Titan. No need to destroy an stabilised character like Turalyon changing his personality over some vague whispers. In fact it will probably go down like this: the void invasion happens, Turalyon helps those in Hallowfall to restablish a connection to the empire in need for help and it turns out to be a bad decision in the long run, he is forced to abdicate and Anduin comes back to save the day and becomes the king once again. We will probably have to fight the emperor when we get to go to Avaloren.

Chris Metzen is not an ambitious writer who uses genre fiction to tackle any of the big questions or explore themes. Chris Metzen like simple, straightforward stories with simple, straightforward characters operating on simple, straightforward agendas. This is why Warcraft and Starcraft are just reskins of Warhammer Fantasy/40k. For all the problematic complexity of the brand after he left, I actually enjoyed the WoW narrative team's guts in introducing moral complexity and 3-dimensional characters with questionable desires, motives, and actions. Now that Metzen is back, is it any wonder we seems to be headed back to cribbing from narratively-simplistic, established properties? I just hope he didn't go on a retcon spree when they handed him back the reins and we actually see the resolution of the compelling complexity the narrative team worked so hard to establish.

Even the grand bastions of genre fiction like Dune and Lord of the Rings were themselves inspired by the Ring of the Nibelung, the Journey to the West, the Mahabarata, and all manner of Biblical and mythological literature. Art is iterative, and being inspired by more contemporary works doesn't make them inherently lesser than those of more classical works. Correlation may not be causation, but if one describes a horse it doesn't mean the listener won't imagine a zebra. The parallels that the Warcraft franchise has with Warhammer Fantasy are hard to ignore, regardless of alleged liscencing debacle. Besides, consumerist genre fiction and the fandoms that grown around them are like an ouroboros; eventually the fan reaction will get back to the source and influence its development.
