I never seen the Lighthouse movie, but from this review it sounds interesting. And I checked on this review cause seeing "Lighthouse" I thought it'd be a movie based off of that horror story about 3 lighthouse workers. I don't know the horror story by name, but it's out there. It's about 3 lighthouse workers, they are caring for the lighthouse and all. One day their monthly supply ship arrives to the island to find an empty and wrecked lighthouse. There was no signs of the workers. The log was mysterious and complaining about a storm and the lighthouse keepers were getting more afraid. It ended saying something like "The skies are calm and God is over all." And the worst thing that scared the crew was that the storm the log was talking about never happened, on the days written of the frighting storm there weren't any storms in the area, it had been calm through out those days. So no one knew what became of the 3 lighthouse keepers. I guess that event was too mysterious to make a horror film about cause there probably wouldn't be a satisfying ending since we still don't know what happened really.

This is definitely in my Top 5 of the year, at number 2 (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is 1), tied with Joker. I know both are very different types of movies, this and Joker, but they are both what I call "descent films", as in a descent into madness, and both are amazing, so they're tied.

Saw it on the Ghent Film Fest in Belgium - one of my favorite movies of the year. Definitely one to check out in the cinema, but apparently Universal, the distributor, isn't even releasing it around these parts - another dumb move by the bigwigs. By the way, that recurring spooky sound is actually a foghorn, which was often used to warn passing ships away from the shore when it was too misty to see the lighthouse properly. The sound team actually painstakingly tried to recreate the actual sound from a late-nineteenth-century foghorn, one of the many nice historical touches in this film.

Well, I can understand why - this is certainly an amazing movie but its definitely not for general audiences. Business wise it makes sense
@darnbricks5 жыл бұрын
@@trueaddict8733 No, it doesn't - it should have at least gotten a limited release in selected arthouse theatres. A lot of my friends who couldn't make it to any of the three screenings on the film festival - which were all sold out, by the way - are pretty miffed that they won't get a chance to watch it on the big screen, so there definitely would've been a market for this kind of movie.

@@trueaddict8733 As mentioned, I'm living in Belgium, and it's not gonna play anywhere in the country outside of the film festival circuit, which isn't even really a 'thing' here. I think it's seven more ridiculous for that reason alone, because I might sound a bit snobbish, but think a European audience would generally speaking enjoy this kind of movie more than the average American film fan.
@trueaddict87335 жыл бұрын
@@darnbricks I dont know how I overlooked your mention of living in Belgium so my apologies. Regarding your particular circumstances, yes I would say withholding the film from arthouse theaters around you is a bad move. And as an American, I completely agree with you that European audiences would eat this film up, while the average movie going audience in America will probably hate it. I dont think that statement is snobby at all - the average American tends to have shitty taste in movies

The ending: SPOILERS obviously -- the story is inspired by the poem The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner (murders the seabird; disaster ensues) and the myth of Prometheus (the Titan who stole fire from the gods and gave it to men; was punished by having his liver ripped out every day by an eagle). Willem's character symbolizes an all-seeing God -- which a sea captain virtually was to his crew -- and RP's is man rebelling. So by the end, when he kills "God" and tries to steal fire in the lighthouse, without being worthy of it, he is rejected by it and killed. Yes, it's a two dudes go crazy in a lighthouse movie, too, but that's the framework.

Saw this last night between joker and the currant war and its probably one of the best films ive seen this year. The only shame was I feel like people just laughed throughout cause "hurr hurr Defoe is speaking all funny" when you can see its supposed to be played straight. Really it reminds me of the favourite last year and Valhalla Rising for years ago.

In my theater for this, there was laughter, but it was during the scenes and parts of the monologues that had actual humorous lines, and the touch of dark comedy. Other than those intentional funny moments, the rest of the audience was dead silent....well, except for the old bitch who talked during 5 important scenes. Personally, this is going to be tied for a close 2nd with Joker (#1 is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), as though both are different types of movies, they are both descent into madness stories, or as I like to call them, "descent movies".
