Curious Cars

Күн бұрын

This was it. In 1979, Lincoln was the only holdout still building a giant, full-frame car designed before the gas crunch, or OPEC, or emissions and safety standards that changed everything about the way Detroit built cars. Never again would there be a car that took up this much real estate and resources to transport an occupant or two in extreme opulence and comfort. Cadillac had downsized in 1977, Chrysler in 1978, and Lincoln would call an end to these land yachts in the 1979 model year, starting a smaller, lighter full sized car in 1980.
Reigning supreme on the boulevard and the highway, this Mark V did exactly what it was designed to do in comfort and style. In 1977, the big block 460 c.i. engine was still available, and still sucked gas like a sailor drinks beer on shore leave. The steering and brakes were overassisted, and it seems ironic that a car of this size could be so effortless to drive.
Never again will we see cars like this cruising the streets and highways, and while many people would say that's a good thing, I'm not one of them. In our cookie-cutter, plastic fantastic world of today, the cars may be better in a lot of ways, and even the ways that count - but they have no soul like a Lincoln Mark V.
Full review and test drive by Bill. Vehicle for sale at Autohaus of Naples, www.AutohausNaples.com, or at (239) 263-8500.

Although I think he was off the air by 1977, cars like this will always remind me of Frank Cannon. Cannon's Mark was actually a bit shorter; it's truly amazing that between two gas-crises, Ford had the audacity to add 2" to the length of one of their biggest cars.

Regarding the name plaque on the dash, there was a Charles B Herron, who died in Oklahoma City on March 5, 1985 at age 75. So he would have been in his late 60's when this car was new. I actually like the rims personally. The chrome rims and chrome exhaust gives it a muscle car vibe and compliments it really well IMO. Its super clean and simple. I prefer it over stock. IMO some old 70's and 80's cars just look tired. No class or luxury even considered when looking at the dated design today. MK5 is one of them IMO. I'm not a big fan of non-stock cars either. Like if we're talking MK3, stock is the way to go, but some cars have style, others don't. I think the rims take an old tired car that typically only enthusiast who are 60+ appreciate and turn it into a head turner for any demographic. Brings it to life.

Man I wish I still had those beautiful books. One day he pulled up in this Mark 5 and I just giggled inside thinking, what a silly thing to drive around in. Larry was a gambler by profession. Bill you can add Gambler onto the list of those careless type A's that couldn't give a fu#k what people think. He asked me what I thought. I lied and said 'wow Larry it's so neat'. Bill you didn’t show how the grille is spring loaded and hinged at the top so the bumper wouldn’t get hurt it in low speed collisions. Really unique. Also the engine is a 385 series (429/460) named for the 3.85” stroke. The 390 engine is part of the older FE engine series.

The wheels and exhaust tips ruin the look for me, but that kinda thing is easily remedied. My true love is the '69 - '71 Mark III, before Lincoln's accountants discovered they could use the same cheap plastic Ford Granada materials in the interiors of their flagship and people would still buy them. But all the Marks were as silent as mausoleums at any speed, impossibly smooth...I just love these cars. Thanks for showing it to us.

I'm surprised how long you let that buzzer keep going lol! I figured you woulda cussed it out and killed it much sooner 😜 What a beautiful car!! I'm close to being in the market for one. I'm tossed between a 77 with the 460 or a 79 Bill Blass (my birth year). There's just not replacement for displacement back then.

@@MrSpartanPaul I grew up in the 80s on Smokey and the Bandit, Dukes of Hazard, Convoy, The Fall Guy, the early days of steel bodied Monster Trucks, the Joey Chitwood stunt show and dirt oval stock cars of the North East started driving mid 90s Hot Rod Lincoln was the perfect go fast song and somehow that CD managed to survive through every wreck I had totaled 8 vehicles in 9 wrecks ( totaled my Z24 cavalier stuck a Sunbird front clip on it then wrecked it again) b4 my 21st birthday and finally got tired of every paycheck goin to my Attorney fines and progressively slower and crappier vehicles.

These were the days when you checked off boxes and ordered the car YOU wanted. No off the shelf stuff. Miss those days. These youngin's dont know what they are missing. Back then we were all treated like we counted. We didn't need to be famous to be treated like we counted. What are you going to do when Dalton leaves? You'll miss him.

My mom had a 79 with the 460. I don't remember ever seeing one with a 400 actually. I took it to prom back in the day. The top package on this model was actually the most expensive car sold in the US in 1978/79 if I recall correctly. Sad the original aluminum wheels are missing. My dad did buy a Caddy later in the 80's, but nothing ever compared to my mom's Lincoln.
