Curious Cars

Yes, I know we did a Mark V a couple of months ago, but this one is a better example, and more fun to highlight. This Wedgewood Blue 1978 model is loaded with options, and has the desirable 460ci under the hood, the last giant engine offered by the big three in a production car.
The Mark V, though cliched even upon its arrival, was the right car for the right time (in terms of customer tastes), but the wrong car for the Malaise era, where downsizing and small engines ruled the day - In defiance of all that, the Mark V was actually larger than its predecessor, and retained a 460ci V8 after most companies had gone to a displacement far lower.
They sold well, though Ford sacrificed long-term planning for short term gain, and their failure to establish a smaller coupe earlier cost them going in to the 1980s. Either way, the world is now better off with a few of these gorgeous dinosaurs prowling the boulevards today.
Full review and test drive by Bill of Curious Cars. Vehicle is for sale at Autohaus of Naples, online at www.autohausnap..., or on the phone at (239) 263-8500.

You mentioned the lack of "woo-ooo" when you got on the gas - the large oil filter-like container hanging off the side of the 460 air cleaner is the resonator that cancels the drone of open secondaries. I had a '76 Thunderbird in the past, and one of the first things I did was remove that resonator and cut a hole to mount another factory Ford breather tube on the driver's side. You could REALLY hear all 4 throats open then!

We stayed in south and mid state Florida via the coastal route on our 42 ft sailboat in 2009 and some of 2010 and I hated the summers too and I am from Texas. Keep up the good work.

I always watch videos from Bill here in Poland, hoping that some day he will show up in a blue Mark IV. Like my 76 Givenchy which I treasue and keep for the next generations. An then.. BOOM!! Maybe not a Mark IV but close anyway :) BTW. It's a double coincidence, because as a kid I've spent one winter break in Naples, FL, and I used to ride in a Buick during that stay. And Bill worked at Buick in Naples exactly at that time. So somehow I fell as if Bill was my uncle :) :)

Love your "reviews" Bill. We own one of these beasts and they are floating living rooms. The "Miles to Empty" gauge you said wasn't working only works when you push that button beside it and it will give you "miles to empty" or until you get to 50 miles to empty, and then the thing stays on. Crude, but early technology. Love the rambling.....keep doing what your doing.

Thanks Bill, new subscriber. It's nice to get authentic reviews of the cars I grew up with eh! My Dad had a 1974 Mercury Grand Marquis Brougham, the only year that the "Grand Marquis" and "Brougham" names were used together I beleive. It had the big "460" in it and a cavernous back seat for 3 young boys. He even built a leatherette covered bench over the drive tunnel, rear seat height, to give us stadium like room to play in on long trips to his brothers home in Palm Beach! Seat belts? What were those 😀

What a fantastic review of a totally wonderful car. I well recall the series on UK TV called "Cannon" and Frank Cannon the detective drove one of these and it was love at first sight for this fabulous car. The Mk V you show at 1.26 is such a great looker but this Wedgwood blue model is the absolute tops for me. Great video and shows the attention to detail shown in the design, great video, love this, thank you so much.
