The fact that the Lion showed even an inkling of respect and consideration about Sanguinius is proof enough of his affection for the Angel. The Lion just doesn't show affection to people. And he grew to like and even cherish Sanguinius in their time together.

It's not. It's just calculation, just as he did with Perturabo. He's still auditioning for the second in command spot. Spot the details! Just one example: Sanguinius arrives and the Smurf immediatly embraces him. However, since Sanguinius must be aware of the tension, he also embraces the Lion, which is more like a gesture of "OK, now we are three and I have no favourite at this point". And the Lion grasps that and thus for political reasons tolerates the embrace. I mean, what's more political/ diplomatic than saying: "I begin to see ...". Flip-Flop position par excellence.

One point that's more 40k but has implications for 30k (Son of the Forest Spoilers): The entity that attacked Lion, be it formed from his own mind, Big E, Chaos or a mix of all of the above; when it took Sanguinius' form, it didn't attack Lion. Which says a lot imo

While I believe Guilliman would most likely never betray the Imperium due to his desires for humanity to prosper. I feel Guilliman, at his core, is loyal to Ultramar. If he could safely seceded Ultramar from the Imperium, he would. Thus I believe in the current canon, Guilliman and the Lion will have conflicting interests, as the latter will always be suspicious. The Lion and the Angel are completely loyal.

Perhaps that would have been a concern based upon his pre-injury actions, but in the novels after his recovery he made all effort to demonstrate to all that he was not just the lord of Ultramar. After all he has done to prove that he is working for then entire Imperium it wouldn't make much sense to suspect him of favoritism in his actions. Now as for where his heart lies, of course home is home.

I know this is quite off topic, but i just read in the HH series how it was indirectly referenced that there was only 1 primarch that was 100% immune from the chaoss gods corruption which is why only this 1 primarch was told about it by the emperor. This came up when dorn,sanguinius,jaghatai and malcador were discussing why none of the primarchs were ever told about chaos by the emperor. He wasnt named, but we all know that 1 primarch was the lion

I have an issue with both Unremembered Empire and Ruinstorm in that the writers didn't seem that interested in exploring real relationship dynamics, especially with the Lion. For Christ sake, he's in the majority of Unremembered Empire and Sanguinius barely shows up at the end of the book and yet the cover is Guilliman and Sanguinius with the Lion nowhere to be found. The Horus Heresy in general is just too heavily Sanguinius-biased

I'm sorry, but enduring a hug isn't a sign of respect, brotherhood or friendship. In particular not in this situation: These three are transhumans constantly playing 4D-chess: to rebuke the embrace, to not play along in this situation - and thus by extension to prematurely force Sanguinius' hand in terms of picking a side - would just have been a stupid and blatant move.
