I mean from what he said it sounds like it's the deep association in Sweden between Neo-Nazis and Carolus Rex (the person, not the song/album) that unnerved people, and some didn't care to dig deeper. This is something going back nearly 100 years, in the 1930's Swedish Nazis kinda claimed him and it's stuck since. Not that the song was accused of being fascist, but that because it was about someone so deeply tied to Swedish fascism people made assumptions. It's a uniquely Swedish association to have it seems.

I'm sorry to say this, but in recent times my image of journalists has become quite bad. So I honestly was not surprised to hear about this interview. I know there are still a few very good journalists out there, but what I see from my, to be honest skewed, perspective is the mass who bows down to the pressure of their companies and the insecurity of their job as well as those with their own political agenda who have no problem with changing reality a bit so that it conforms to the own ideals. I'm talking about the people whose ideology makes them feel vastly morally superior to the rest of us mortals and because they have moral superiority and they have an obligation to teach us their morals. You have the same problem on the other side of the political spectrum as well with charlatans like alex jones but at least we have realized their idiocrasy and mostly banned them from every sensible discussion. The same can not be said about the moralists as it is really hard to throw someone out that preaches morality, even tho the ideology behind it is completely bonkers. So yeah, my view on Journalists isn't the best right now. I hope it will recover after the inevitable crash in the print media sector.

I discovered Sabaton during Covid, and listen to nearly all their songs (I'm still discovering new ones everyday tough ...). Carolus Rex is one of the first I listened (the first was Last stand), and still my favorite one (especially in Swedish, I kinda have the feeling that's it is the original song, it feels more powerful, the lyrics plays better with the music ...). I didn't knew the swedish history, before listening to you guys. Now I'm reading books and article by the hundreds because that history is trully fascinating. And this song, and the history of Charles XII did a lot in that way. It's only when I watched this video that I learned that Charles is a fascist and a nazi symbol in Sweden. Well I wanted to tell to you : you did well. Because everywhere, in every country, Fascist and Nazi take characters of the local national history, and turn their history and their deeds into their fantasy, and their symbols. They try to do the same thing with Joan of Arc in France (Yes I'm french, pardon my french), and I'm pretty sure they do the same everywhere. By making an album about Carolus Rex, and a song about him, I hope that you did something in order to allow him back to his original place in History. Because that's only when we give up on the past that other may transform it and tell whatever they want about it. Congrats Sabaton ! Keep up with the good work ! (And by the way, doesn't Joan deserve a song ? "The girl on fire" or something like that ...)

I can't help but feel that those that lambast media as being 'enabling' of certain ideologies and agendas are simply betraying how easily influenced they are. If a historical album is enough to convert people into monster...what about the likes of rap that glorifies gang violence and crime? And of course, you can take this across mediums - movies, books, tv, and the ever-popular punching bag of popular culture in Video Games. If you argue that its impossible to separate fiction and reality, or in this case history and revisionism, then you are admitting that you yourself cannot see the differences. History is a precious, somber lesson to us - those that seek to forbid it are rarely interested in learning why.

I'd add news media itself to that list. They're effectively taking "if it bleeds it leads" to the extreme of spraying fake blood all over a crime scene to boost ratings without caring about the evidence they're destroying to do so.

Carolus Rex is my favorite Sabaton album, and I was super shocked and excited to hear Lion from the North & Carolus Rex played at Sabaton's recent concert in NYC! Definitely wasn't expecting that in the setlist but it made a great day even better!

I've been working so much lately, I've forgotten to watch all your newest videos ☹️ There's something seriously wrong with me. But when I saw that today's episode is about Carolus Rex, I knew I had to watch it asap. This, in Swedish, is my power song and I always listen to it first when I start my car. And as a theologian, I've been wondering whether or not Carolus was as fanatic about the divinity of the source of his power, as portrayed in the songs, but apparently he was... Great episode, thank you! ❤️

@ Metalhead Mom The "Carolus Rex" album is what actually got me looking into the Swedish Empire. (Also, if I remeber right, most absolute monarchs of the time used the Divine right of Kings argument.)
@TheMmus4 жыл бұрын
@@josephpeck8723 Yes, you're right, they USED it to gain authority and to appear righteous rulers for the common man. But did many of them ACTUALLY believe they were chosen/anointed kings by God, is another question. Carolus' time was soon to be the time of Enlightenment, and some of the ideas were probably already present in the mindset of the educated elite. So, like I said, I had wondered whether or not the "boy-king" was as certain of his divine right as portrayed in the songs, but seems like he really believed in it.

I just wanna thank you guys for making these songs and Indy for explaining the history behind them. In my country, they don't even mention Sweden and the Thirty Years War took up about 10 minutes of class. So to find all these things out through awesome metal songs is really cool. Keep up the good work

I really love the contrast between the English and Swedish version of the song. The English version shows how his enemies saw him, a ruthless and arrogant warmonger,while the Swedish version gives a more personal and honorable picture of him.

Great shirt Indy! Totally outclasses the infamous "Puffy Shirt" from Seinfeld Season 5. Good for the Guys in Sabaton for not caving in on the content they cover due to some dubious modern interpretations of historical events. That unprepared journalist sounds like the kind of guy that who would try to paint Mel Brooks as a Nazi (despite colossal and painfully obvious evidence to the contrary) because he wrote the song "Springtime for Hitler" for "The Producers."

I don't blame them though, in terms of making a album that is specifically Swedish history. Me as an American who loves his country, I know I would do the same for the U.S. if I made music. And only if said interview was published, would get a good kick out of seeing Joakim going off on that journalist.

Joakim is beyond cool and whilst I have no doubt that he's a patriotic Swede ( there's a live video of Lion from the North where he takes a Swedish flag from a pair of young ladies in the audience and drapes it around himself), the idea that he's a closet neo-nazi would be alien to anyone who's ever listened to Sabaton. I mean these are the guys who sing about Heroic Germans, Poles, Greeks, Brits, and yanks. Who highlighted the role of Maori's in the trenches of France and the union of nations that took the slopes of St Benedict. I just want a time machine so I can be a fly on the wall in that interview ............ a pity that it was never published :) Seriously though Sabaton are great educators, great role models and most importantly ......... bloody good musicians

I'm shocked anyone could see Sabaton as anything but very polite dorks (and I say that with the highest admiration). When I saw them live Joakim referrer to the crowd as his "Very Excitable Friends", they were goofing around on stage with eachother, they gave a shoutout to the history fans for being awesome, and Joakim gave me a thumbs up mid song during Attack of the Dead Men because I held up a pic of Paul Von Hindenburg during the line "Hindenburg Against the Tzar". I still tell people how amazing that concert was almost a year later

When I first heard Sabaton, I was not sure of what to think. I then began to listen more closely and realized that they were singing about history and praising the valor and courage of the participants of wars, but yet never condoning war. I heard their song about the 82nd Airborne, my first cousin was in the 82 airborne and I sent it to him, he loved it. I am a fan.
