A 15 minute video to show his disgust that the new Lion king doesn't have a dolly zoom. I love it.
@mbanerjee58893 жыл бұрын
It zooms in on Simba at the start of the stampede and zooms out when Simba screams "no" after Mufasa falls. It visually and thematically ends the action, so when Simba does return to Mufasa's body, it's that much more heartbreaking.
@ChillGoblin7 ай бұрын
Another aspect of the lion king shot that I loved is the way they distort Simba's facial features in the same way a camera will distort your features the closer it gets to your face- his nose gets bigger, his ears move behind his head, his eyes move further apart. If you compare Simba's face before and after the vertigo shot is completed, it's much more correctly proportioned. The attention to detail here is incredible!

The fact that Simba's plunged into shadow at the end of the movement really heightens the emotional impact of the shot. I haven't seen that anywhere else I can think of. Of course, his performance is pitch-perfect too. 😁

The dolly zoom has a special place for me because I discovered how it was done quite by accident when playing around with my parents' VHS camcorder when I was a kid and zoomed while sliding it along the floor. Blew my mind. Really interesting video. Thanks.

im late as hell to the party, my apologies, but the lion king is like one of my favorite films ever? it was my first major interest as a child and influenced me a lot. we had dvds with extras and shit and i would watch them so much theyd scratch. i occassionally rewatch it, and whenever my mom's friends come around and they happen to have kids, its the first film i think to put on for them to watch. pass the brainworm, yknow the stampede scene has always stuck with me in every way. from the score, to the animation, to the emotional impact its left on us all. and having seen it as many times as i have, youd think id get over it. NUH UH even to this day i get goosebumps. my blood literally runs cold thanks to that dolly shot. the execution was perfect, and honestly the best way to have done it, that i cannot even think of any live action examples that fill me with as much dread as that exact shot brings me. perhaps its just because it was a huge interest, but no matter how many times i watch it, or hell even just think about the score, my whole body reacts thats just how good that shot is
@TLK94193 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why this is in my recommended, but I'm glad it was. I watched the whole thing. I don't absolutely hate the remake, but a lot of it was certainly disappointing. One of the things I noticed the first time I watched it was that it was missing the dolly zoom, and honestly the classic vocal "wail" that holds the tension for a second was one of my favorite and defining parts of the stampede sequence. I always just silently appreciated the dolly zoom in the original because I know nobody I know cares that much about the tiny camera details like that and I don't blame them, but I'm glad I found someone else who does too.

This is a great video essay! Disney's hand drawn animated films deserve more scholarly analysis than just gender roles or racism and this video only hints at an endless potential. Also, I would add to the "They made a billion dollars by being lazy" further and say that Disney was so obsessed and slavish over one single aspect - realism - that they utterly neglected even the most basic cinematic techniques that no movie, animated or live-action, should be without. And still Disney acts like LK 2019 is a live action film and a superior improvement over a movie that was "unfinished" or "under budget"!

Hey Jesse, recent sub. This is really good, man. My ex of 17 years went to AI for 3d animation, we lived south of Pixar, and lots of friends were also in 'the business'. My mother is a disney afficinado, and later in my life I've have really taken to old school illustration (dip pens, a lot of paper, and a literal trail of tears :D) and your content is right up my alley. When I saw the 3d shot in the beginning and you said you had set it up, I prepared to hear, "Yeah, this took me a few minutes in (insert rage and envy clouding my ears), and when I heard weeks i signed, and cleaned a nib. It is great, I have no idea what kind of audience you will get with this form, but you will likely get every single person that has ever studied a celluloid painting. I want to build a digital multi-plane camera some day, dangit!! (Yes, just mount a couple of 5D's on a janky rig, why?) And happy December!

I gave this video a like because it is very lovingly crafted and well narrated and the information within it is well-understood by the writer and does a great job conveying information about this technique. It has all the work and hallmarks of a great video. That said, I did not find this video particularly engaging because it was not paced very well. I felt that you could have gotten through the content faster and moved the video forward at a more active pace. The methods being discussed were not super complicated to understand and didn't necessitate such a slow pace, in my opinion. Just an insight from someone who likes your work. Regardless, got my like and my watch because you're an amazing content creator. Thanks for putting together such a high-quality video!

What I feel is that the animated version has that shot and it works coz of Simba's expression. But in live action version (actually also animated) the lion can't emote in th same way...so the dolly zoom would not work. That may be the reason they omitted it. But to be frank something else could have been done to create tension. The shot and music that they have used in the new one is too flat.
