The original script apparently called for much darker moments. As Nuka was dying, he was originally going to say to Zira something like “at least I finally got your attention.” And Zira was meant to deliberately let go of the cliff and fall to her death. Yeah, there was going to be a suicide in a Disney movie.

I disagree that Zira giving Kovu his scar, thus making him look more like Scar, has no significance though. Throughout the movie, we see Kovu struggling with the idea of following in Scar's footsteps ("Maybe there's a darkness inside of me, too") and this starts coming to a head when Nuka dies. When Kovu says he wants nothing more to do with Scar, Zira even says "You cannot escape it [...] You killed your own brother!" because Nuka dying by Kovu's actions parallels Scar's killing of Mufasa. In Kovu's eyes, Nuka's death has increased his likeness to Scar, and his new scar symbolizes their similarities.

You absolutely _nailed_ the problem I have with this whole prolific celebrity names on the poster being the single defining draw to an animated movie! I've definitely noticed how most times (I only say most, because there are at least some celebrities out there who have a great, natural understanding of voice acting) the celebrity sees it as a way to be wacky, goofy, and fun for the kids. While I watch the movie I can easily imagine them in the recording booth, flailing their arms. With voice actors, though, I'm completely swept up, my mind doesn't drift to how it looks behind the scenes, the inflection feels so natural. It truly belongs to the character.

@@LadyDecember It's the one thing I always praise in films animated or live-action, especially for "star talent". Watching this movie now as an adult, I only now realize how potent it is when in the height of her anguish, Kiara tells Simba, "you will NEVER be Mufasa!" Both Kiara and Simba have felt that pressure and she finally throws such a strong line at him. I wish that would've gone somewhere because it was a hell of a statement.
@averymerrick4 жыл бұрын
Fridge Brillance: Simba's sudden overprotectiveness and mistrust of Kovu makes him look like a total douche at first, as many fans have pointed out over the years. *But* *it* *makes* *more* *sense* *for* *him* *than* *you* *might* *think.* If you look into the medical symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, Simba fits the bill perfectly for a lot of them. Firstly, we see that he relives a traumatic event (Mufasa's death) through the dream sequence where Scar morphs into Kovu. He has prejudicial beliefs about Kovu and the Outsiders because of their connection to Scar. Simba is clearly psychologically distressed, he's anxious about Kiara's safety, and he assumes Kovu is up to no good because he's an outsider (plus the physical resemblance to Scar, reminding him of the trauma even further); the list goes on. This is classic PTSD here, and it's more than fair to assume Simba has it. Keep in mind: he watched his father get trampled to death, had his own uncle tell him it was directly his fault and then was forced to run away from home all while he was still just a cub. It's no wonder Simba was such an emotional wreck here. -Similarly, provided the Outlanders were initially undeserving of banishment beyond loving Scar, Simba may have banished them because he was projecting his hatred of Scar onto them. -Not to mention, he is a king now. Weary is the head that has a crown resting on it. Simba has to maintain an enormous kingdom while wrestling with his implied PTSD, and it is known that stress can easily aggravate psychological trauma, especially trauma gained in childhood. When you consider all the trauma Simba went through, along with his PTSD, it really isn't a surprise he spends most of the movie in angry fits or needlessly pessimistic.

It's a good read on Simba's behaviour throughout the movie, though at the same time Simba's prejudice towards the Outlanders is fully justified. They're basically a murderous cult who have been raised to hate Simba and want to kill him and take his throne. So while his treatment of Kovu is harsh, throughout most of the movie Simba is never given a good reason to trust any of the Outlanders. And the moment he puts his trust in Kovu he almost get killed for it.

Regardless of the film itself, several actors are impossible for fans to not associate with their characters: -Neve Campbell's performance as Kiara is widely liked due to the fact that Neve makes Kiara an incredibly believable character, along with the fact that it is a break from horror movies. -Jason Marsden's performance as Kovu is just as well liked for the fact he portrays Kovu as a deeply torn and guilt ridden lion torn between his family, and his love. -Suzanne Pleshette as Zira is widely acknowledged as one of the most iconic voices of the film, for portraying a violent sociopath whose barely calm tone hides the fact that her rage is barely restrained.

@@astrowolvez I remember when watching ATLA for the first time, I often saw a lot of similarities between Zuko and Kovu: - They have a scar on their left eye that was given to them by their parent (Ozai burning Zuko vs. Zira slashing Kovu) - They both have experienced being exiled - They want to escape the destiny that's placed upon them by someone else (Zuko capturing Aang vs. Kovu killing Simba) and become a better person towards the end after switching sides (Zuko joining Team Avatar vs. Kovu joining Simba's Pride) - They have a psychotic/abusive parent that would go as far as harming their own children and use them for their desires - Zuko and Kovu were never bad as little kids. They always had that good inside of them, but their parents ended up making them suffer for what they had to deal with when they got older - They both get advice from whimsical old men (Iroh and Rafiki) - These two have siblings (Azula and Nuka) who are psychotic pyromaniacs who hate their sibling and constantly crave their parents' attention - They have a difficult time being trusted by one of the main characters that comes from the other side of where they're from (Katara and Zuko vs. Simba and Kovu) - The characters that Zuko and Kovu are trying to be trusted by are dealing with a personal issue, which is the loss of one of their parents. Katara's mother was captured and murdered by the Fire Nation and Simba's father was murdered by Scar in the first film. Both Katara and Simba place their anger on Zuko and Kovu due to their relation of where the murderers come from as well as how their physical appearances reminds them of their enemies (“You’re the Fire Lord’s Son!” / "Kovu is one of them...Scar's heir...How can I accept him?") - When they started gaining the trust from them after having a conversation, they ended up going back to mistrusting them due to feeling betrayed by them based off an attack that occurred later on. - In the end, Zuko and Kovu are forgiven by Katara and Simba and they no longer have issues with them.

I don't think that Kovu's line "We Are One" is misplaced. When Kiara seems confused that's probably because she knows that she's heard that line before, but doesn't initially remember that her dad sung that to her when she was younger. What Kovu is referring to when he sees their reflection is that "We Are One" meaning their prides belong together. I like how "We Are One" is introduced as a song, has a couple reprises, and is a recurring thematic line said by Kovu in this scene, Kiara when Kiara and Kovu stop the feud between the two prides, and finally at the very end when Mufasa as a spirit tells Simba "Well done my son. We Are One."

Try it sometime. Watch your childhood film as an adult, study the artwork, the culture, the influences. Find some themes that went over your head as a child. Those Disney films were made by adults that secretely wanted Academy Awards and the respect of their movie-making peers and not just to occupy children for over an hour. Of course this is something to be done with less simplistic flicks as there is little depth in Care Bears. There are a tons of "Making of" documentaries to help you re-evaluate those films. My favorite is "Waking up the Sleeping Beauty" in which we see epic corporate drama, back-stabbing and intrigues behind the Disney Reneissance.

To be fair Zera.. and many of those other Lion's never existed in the original movie so it's a soft-retcon. But in the original story (cannon one) Zera and her followers were banished, because they were Scar worshippers. Basically because Scar had chosen Kovu, Zera demanded that her son should be the next king. Simba of course refused and a fight broke out, resulting in Zera's defeat and she was banished along-side her followers. Over-all the banished Lions are a kind of shoe-horned in element that kind of broke the continuity of the show. meanwhile.. years later Lion-guard.. and broke everything...
@MoonShadowWolfe4 жыл бұрын
The TV series has expanded their magical rules considerably, and within those, there is a possibility of Zira making the effort to receive some word from the other side of who Scar wants his heir to be. But frankly, you don't need them, because even the canon at the time allows the possibility of passed kings giving advice to the living. They never said they had to be good kings to do that.

@animalpawpony35474 жыл бұрын
@@kris_creations1338 Yeah and even that didn't work. With The Lion Guard, it tried to explain things that happened in between movies 1 and 2. For example, why Zira and the others were banished to The Outlands. But there are lots if problems if fans try considering it canon; 1. Kiara's personality turnaround personality as you mentioned, not to mention her annoying girly friends in the series. Ugh! 2. Zira and the others NEVER mention Kion, The Lion Guard, or The Roar. So when the episode "Lions of the Outlands" aired, it makes no sense how they would know about Kion being Simba's son, The Lion Guard, or The Roar when those things are completely absent from Simba's Pride. Granted, those things aren't needed for the movie, but aftering watching Simba's Pride and then seeing Lions of the Outlands, you can just tell the execution set up isn't that good since the characters somehow know about stuff that was never mentioned or explained in the movies. How the hell could they mess up?! Disney owns the movies! It wouldn't be that hard to watch them and get the continuity right! 3. In fact #2 makes a problem for Simba's Pride; if Zira wanted to be ruler, why not go after Kion first, then Simba? If Simba died, Kion would be next lion up for the position of king. Why not take out the little guy, then go for Simba. Heck, this was the problem Scar ran into and look at how THAT turned out when Simba returned? Terrible! He got burned and eaten by hyenas. 4. Although The Lion Guard is a clever concept, the fact that Simba and the others act like they somehow know all about the Guard, the Roar, and background of those story elements comes out of nowhere. It adds more to Scar and other characters, but the problem is the characters act like this has ALWAYS been the history of the Pride. And yet, that suggests this fictional world would already exist BEFORE the 1st Lion King. Clever, except for one major detail - HHHOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW?!?!?!?! How is that possible?! Disney made The Lion King as a passion project on the side! They thought Pocahontas would be the big movie winner. But instead, it went to The Lion King. How on earth could The Pride Lands, The Guard, the Roar, the history of the lions, ect. exist if Disney was still coming up with ideas for the 1st movie, let alone not expecting it to be a film for the history books? IT MAKES NO SENSE! Clever, but it's super confusing. 5. On top of what I said in 4, the characters knowing the history of The Lion Guard and the Roar makes no sense because there's no clues in the movies that this was a part of the Pride's history. Just the fact that they make the characters ACT this way is mind boggling! There was no reason why the characters giving us this new info should have been treated as if it's a part of Prideland history. There is 0 evidence of the Guard/Roar foreshadowed or given to the audience in the first 2 movies. So how the hell do the characters we know and love somehow KNOW about The Lion Guard and the Roar, when nothing would suggest this?! It comes out of nowhere! How the hell did the people working on The Lion Guard MISS this?! 6. Although I like The Lion Guard, I honestly treat it as a set of side adventures in The Lion King universe. If you try to add it to the movie continuity, it's a mixed bag. Most of the time I ignore the confusing stuff and only pay attention tonwhat makes sense. When doing that, THEN it kinda fits with the continuity, but not perfectly. Still, I like it, but I can see why people have issues with it. 7. Kion and his Guard are nowhere in the movies. So how is it posdible Simba and Nala had a son?

I mean, the animals in LK aren't really anthropomorphic aside from bigger eyes and the ability to talk (and the typical definitions of a furry are either 'owning a furry suit and/or identifying as a furry' or 'having an affinity for anthropomorphic animals and/or identifying as a furry'). I wouldn't personally consider it a seed of "furry-ness" but then again, I don't know what else I'd consider it.

Something that was interesting in this movie was how it subtly discussed what happened to conquered people who were pushed to the outskirts of society and subjugated. Honestly this is something that happens often in real life, and it shows how this doesn’t usually end conflict but instead causes more. Unlike certain Disney remakes that try to approach social issues *cough*, this one didn’t drill it into ur skull. It just shows how conflict can build more conflict.
