Balto should be bigger than the other dogs. Seriously, Steel looks more like a wolf hybrid than Balto.
@2wingo4 жыл бұрын
Steel is not only a purebred Alaskan Malamute, a very large breed by any standards, but he's a working dog, not a pet; his diet would consist of the best available raw meat in large quantities several times a day. Balto, by contrast, is a wolfdog (he appears to be half Husky, a breed that is noticeably smaller than the Malamute) and a stray whose diet is limited to what he can hunt or scavenge. It would make less sense if Balto was larger than Steele.

Always thought this... Half-Wolf hybrids (I've lived in places where this actually happens accidentally) are HUGE. They're huge as puppies with massive paws and teeth and yellow eyes and they grow to be (usually) near double the size of the non-wolf breed parent. They can be great companions in the care of trained rescue/rehab specialists or people who have knowledge and huge acerages for them to roam/wander on, but 100% not a pet animal. Ever. Balto really should have been double that size. He should have been repped somewhere between the wolves and Steele in size - bigger than the sled dogs, smaller than the full wolves. Then again, the actual Balto doesn't look different so... :|

The goose actually made it a point to tell Balto that "a dog can't find that team, but maybe a wolf can." when he left town, telling Balto he needed to accept all of himself to succeed. The whole white wolf sequence was Balto finally accepting that part of himself. That's why he's stronger and able to actually get back to Nome using just his nose.

I agree, I think the wolf is real and probably one of his parents. There's a real paw print in the snow for him to stick his own in to. It does come across as kinda mystical, too, but that's not exactly new with wolves. I just meant the narrative point of the sequence and the changes afterwards were due to the whole identity acceptance thing.

Here's the saddest part about the coffins: those kids are already dead. From what I can remember (my sister was obsessed with the history of Balto and did know about Togo), I think one adult and four children did die before the medicine got there. So the coffins, one large and three small (I dunno why there isn't a fourth, maybe the dude's in the middle of making it), represent the victims of those who didn't make it. Makes this children's movie a little more painful, huh? Here's another historical fact: although the sequels feature Balto with his kids, Balto was neutered.

Its not kinda true that Balto didnt have as much struggle as Togo maybe had. Yes, Togo and his team mastered the longest and maybe more dangerous route, but don't forget, there was a snowstorm which actually really made Baltos team get lost. Balto was supposed to lead the second last team, but they didn't make it to the checkpoint, passed it and ran back all the way to Nome, through the worst storm imaginable. And it was Balto, who found the way back home, not his musher. He told that he had lost orientation during the blizzard and let the dogs do the work. It was a miracle that they made it out of there so fast and for that, Balto definitely deserves the credit, BUT I hate how they put his name above all of the others that helped. Its not Baltos fault, if anything, it's the musher who just took the credit without standing up for his fellow teams. What an ego....

They made appearances at the Madison Square Garden (Togo and HIS team) shit he even was in ads for cigarettes. "Togo couldn't sled anymore more after the run" well it's expected he was already 12 when he ran. Even so he still was healthy and in good conditions. Yes Balto got fame but so did Togo. Never understood the hatred Balto got. It's not the dog himself said anything or claimed anything. The musher did all that crap. Hate the musher not the dog. And the fact that the musher sold off his team after they ran their usefulness is even more bullshit. Seriously. Yea Togo deserves credit but that doesn't mean people have any right for hating a dog that just happen to have fame thrown at him. I loved the Balto movie and while I understand it barely follows the real story it's still a fun watch.
@vixxcelacea27787 жыл бұрын
Actually, the dogs were sold with out the Gunnar's permission by the sponsor of the race. Balto and team were sold to a freak show and abused for years before someone who recognized them worked to get them out. Money/corporate taints everything No one should hate on any dog. if I remember correctly, at the very end of the sequel, it is revealed that the white wolf was balto's mother... but that apparently wasn't the plan of the creators of the first film
@silversamurai02677 жыл бұрын
The sequel (if you want to accept it as a sequel...) actually hints at the white wolf being his mother. Balto tells his daughter about her, saying that she had pure white fur. And a white wolf spirit follows them throughout their entire journey, until Balto acknowledges her near the end and literally says, "Thank you, mother". So, yeah... If you acknowledge the sequel as an actual sequel for this movie, then the White Wolf is, in fact, Balto's mother in spirit form, returning to him in his time of need, and encouraging him to accept all of himself and continue on his journey, instead of giving up. It's actually kind of heart warming... :')

Disingenuous fame has to be called out, especially when it’s intentionally sought out, which Balto and his owner/Musher did. The point is an entire group came together to save those little kids, and it relied on them all sacrificing for success. This story is exactly the same as the US independence war story of the riders who warned of the British coming. Only the very last guy(Paul Revere), who rode the shortest (and safest) Portion of the ride, got ALL the glory; which was intended for a group of +6 men. And then he tried parleying that fame into a lucrative political career post-war.

The white wolf, I always took it to be the spirit of his parent, even before the sequels. Second one hints that it's his mother (I remember she was a white as snow, etc). But I mean, some people apparently took offense to that, but then what was the white wolf supposed to be? I always took it as the spirit of his mother giving him the answer he needed: a dog can't make this journey alone, but maybe a wolf can. He kept neglecting that side of himself to fit in, but it was a part of him and could help him here. He didn't howl with the wolves earlier in the movie, but when the white wolf showed up howling, he did howl with it, accepting his wolf heritage and gaining the inner strength he needed to get back up the mountain with the medicine. (which, yeah, no dog could do because that's a mountain and you should be dead because you fell, but, hey, cartoon logic.) Then people were apparently angry about the spiritual elements/supernatural elements of the sequel? But like... it was already in the first one with the white wolf?

The movie was made for people to look up to an icon. Balto the character represented all the dogs who made the journey. Remember it said based off a true story. They chose Balto because of his unique half dog half wolf which made the movie interesting. Think about it. To me Balto is a hero because of the movie but also what he represents.

He also was neutered because he didn't seem like breeding material to his owner.

@@SAMMYTASTISCH As far as I know, he was a purebred husky, he just didn't meet the standards of the breeder. So, Balto was still a purebred Husky, he just was just not a "breed standard" Husky.

Well also to be fair to Balto when a movie says "based on a true story", they only have to a minimum 10% of the facts be actually true. So having Balto (fact one) a half dog (2) in Alaska (3) run a sled team (4) to get medicine (5) for a town (6) dying of dyptheria (7) in 1925 (8) because a blizzard stopped the train (9) eliminating his outcast status (10) would technically fill the qualifications

Also fun fact, the actual Balto wasn't part wolf he was a purebred husky and only ran the last leg of the race. the dog who actually ran the longest, Togo, was owned by the owner of balto. But, Balto was being used as a lead on another sled team. Togo never got the recognition he deserved while Balto did only because the team passed by the other sled team who had fallen asleep. I grew up on this movie and read the book about Balto but when I really looked up the true tale, I was quite upset at the fact they ignored the Fact Togo who was 12 years old at the time of the trek ran longer than the much younger Balto. Togo deserves more recognition... But, sadly only the locals recognized him for his hard work.

Actually, Their owner made an uproar about the whole thing and sold him to a freak show where he spend almost the entire remains of his life. He was discredited and not allowed to the ceremony where Togo and the owner were receiving awards. Also, Balto ran in conditions described by his musher as so bad that he could not see the end of his hands, and ran the *second* longest track (measly 54 miles compared to Togo's over 300, however Balto's track was still _two times longer_ than some of the other teams').

Though certainly not a leisurely Sunday stroll, neither of the two parts were as harsh and long as that completed by Seppala and Togo (The lake and cliff in the movie: All inspired by parts of Seppala's journey), involving crossing the Norton Sound (saving about a day's travel time), which Seppala was deemed the most qualified for as he had done it a few times. At the time both pairs became famous for the Serum Run, but Kaasen and Balto more than anyone else.

Fun fact! Aniu is the name of the white wolf and she is Balto's mother. The fact that Balto has little memory of her suggests that she died when he was still a puppy. Seeing as how she's dead, Aniu couldn't have helped pull the sled. Also, she came to Balto telling him to quit being a little bitch and to get the damn meds to the kids. That scene was a bit of motherly tough love inspiration. Your welcome!

The White Wolf was originally just Balto's inner voice. The director of the original stated Balto's father was the wolf parent, and the White Wolf was also referred to as a male in the novelization. Of course, the sequel came out years later by different people and the director of that one decided to make the White Wolf his mother and thus that's how everyone will recall this scene upon watching that.

Anony Mous in the movie the other dogs actually reference that his mother was a wolf.
@AnonyMous-zy3tz7 жыл бұрын
The only reference the other dogs make is "I've got a message for your mother," and howling. That doesn't without a doubt imply that his mother was a wolf, because for all we know they were mocking his mother for having a relationship with a wolf who are pretty much considered barbarians to the other dogs.

Balto also said that he inherited his big paws from his mom's side, indicating that his mother was the wolf.
@AnonyMous-zy3tz6 жыл бұрын
Balto never said anything about inheriting big paws from his mom's side in the first movie. Straight from the movie he says, "Big paws kinda run in my family. At least, uh, one side of my family."

I mean, to be fair, Balto DID have to run for longer than he or his team were meant to because the dog team that was supposed to be last was asleep and it would take too long to wake them all up and harness the dogs so Balto's owner decided to just keep going themselves. Balto's team DID have to go through a blizzard as well, so while Togo's team definetely deserve credit Balto's fame isn't entirely undeserved.

Togo ran 261 miles. Balto ran 53. That's literally 1/5 of the distance--a fraction. ALL of the dogs in the race were to be commended, but it's kind of like working your ass off to research and write a paper and your partner getting all the credit for giving a five-minute presentation to the class. Besides, one could argue that Balto's musher didn't wake the other team so that he would be the last leg of the race and get the credit.

Originally, Steele was supposed to die near the end of the movie (hanging by his collar, falling into a coal shaft, and getting buried alive), but producers that was too dark for children so Steele was abandoned & hated by everyone instead. Well if you think about it, Steele trying to stop Balto and the others from bringing back the medicine and putting death on the town was pretty dark. If Steele’s death did happen in the movie, it would have been karma.
