Nice job cleaning up the washer bottle, what did Mallory use to clean it up like that?
@Vangabonders Жыл бұрын
Baking soda, vinegar, dawn dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and a magic eraser. This is what she told me lol

Love your KZbin channel! I just discovered it. While I may not have the experience or confidence in tackling projects of this scale, I very much appreciate being able to see what I can or cannot do and thereby need to hire out to a mechanic. May I share a link to your channel on my "Sparky the VW Buw" website so I can help others who are restoring buses find you? Cheers - and keep up the great work!!! Happy Holidays from Omaha, Nebraska.

what did you use to clean the washer bottle and get it from yellow to white?
@nmartin5551 Жыл бұрын
Any reason you didn’t hit it with the pressure washer first?
@Vangabonders Жыл бұрын
Honestly, it probably would have been a good idea but unfortunately I don't always have one on hand. It is possible to push water past seals with a pressure washer though. I'd say if you have one do it like that lol

Brass bristles are the wrong choice for degreasing an iron case.
@Vangabonders Жыл бұрын
I sure learned that one the hard way
@mwilliamshs Жыл бұрын
@@Vangabonders never wondered "why brass?"? Brass is soft and non-marring. Brilliant for getting patina off a delicate item or removing corrosion from something engraved, etc. Frankly stupid for scrubbing dirt from an iron steering gearcase. Probably didn't even need degreaser. A buck at the car wash would've yielded a cleaner case with less labor and a fraction of the money invested. Follow that with some Dremel wire brushing in the corners and crevices, then a cleanse in acetone or other surface-prep, and you're done. Also befuddling to see the case coated in a protective layer BEFORE the seals were replaced. The seals didn't get coated and the removal/installation process compromised the coating. You also mentioned that the input flange o-ring isn't readily available but didn't mention how you addressed it.
@Vangabonders Жыл бұрын
Honestly I used the brass bristle brush because its the only thing I had around at the time. As far as the O-ring seal I just cleaned it up and re-used it. I have seen other people use RTV or some kind of silicone/gasket maker but I didn't feel like it was necessary. Only time will tell
