A lot of fairy tales are dark because they contain lessons to live by. The Japanese films are faithful to the original story in order to teach children the lesson that "if you cheat, you will fail in the end". The Disney version is a film with a happy ending for entertainment purposes. It's the same film but in a different direction.

Cautionary tales are good to tell, and the Little Mermaid is no different. Hans did this to remind audiences that the popular ending don’t always happen, but you will get a bittersweet outcome that will be in your heart. And I can’t believe that All Dogs Go to Heaven, which has a similar premise, lost to Disney’s butchering of the classic tale.

As a Japanese, I have one thing to inform you. There is another anime in Japan that is based on this story and it has a happy ending. The title is "Mahou no mako-chan" (Magic Mako). It has 48 episodes and started in November 1970. it was made five years before this movie.

Anderson's story is one of my personal favorites. Though the artists who worked on the Disney movie deserve all the accolades they got, I can't help but feel the movie feels shallow at times. I watched the anime film for the first time about a decade ago, and I gotta say I appreciate it for being more faithful.

I am an elder millennial and I remember obsessedly watching the Japanese version 1 million times on VHS before the Disney version. They are completely different. But they’re both amazing and unforgettable.

I’m an older millennial, and I also watched the Japanese version a million times before I ever saw the Disney version. But I just rewatched the Japanese version again thirty years later, and I was struck by how much Disney copied from the film. That being said, I was also struck by how much the Japanese film copied from previous Disney films that came before it (such as the character of the Siamese cat in Lady and the Tramp). Art tends to copy art that came before it. Even Ariel’s design is based on a painting by John William Waterhouse called “The Mermaid”. I don’t think it’s plagiarism, just a nod to great art that came before.

I watched the old one a lot as a kid. My mother gave me my middle name "Marina" after her. My mother would wait for her cable to play this movie when she was a child. Constantly checking the tv guide magazines to find when it's playing.

I like them both honestly. The Japanese version of it's faithfulness to the original story. And the disney version for it's lovely animation and how they put their own spin on the story and made it their own. So love them both the same but for different reasons.

In my opinion, both movies are masterpieces. While they both are based on the same fairytale, they each tell the story in a different way, introducing different but unique characters and valuable lessons. Even though I used to not like the Disney version, I have learned to appreciate the lessons it taught me and I believe the Disney movie shouldn't be bashed for telling the story in a different way. Of course, you can prefer one version over the other, but that doesn't mean you should directly send hate to the other. Both movies have had an impact on me as a person, and I wish others can learn to appreciate both versions of the story for what they are.

I must have been 4 years old when I watched this, I’m 32 now. I always remembered it for some reason, the blonde mermaid who turned into bubbles and had a knife, and some dark haired sisters in the water. Wow, here it is.

The 1970’s one was one of my favorites as a kid, and was also the first version that showed me the true ending. Ariel was my favorite as a kid (and still is), but this one made me a fan of the story as a whole outside of just the Disney version.

It's not bad to show kids that life always has a happy ending, but it's also not bad to teach kids that life doesn't always end happily, and to teach them lessons that don't end badly, right? I mean, Japanese folk tales or European fairy tales, many of the stories were meant as "warnings against bad endings," but since when did we start teaching children that "all people can be good-looking heroes"? Wouldn't believing that and falling short be a worse life than living in fear of a bad ending?

That’s basically the side moral that Andersen was telling us in his original Little Mermaid story. Having to take away this lesson in an adaptation, with more detriments and less benefits, BTW, should result in backlash, especially for fans of the original tale.

I would agree that it’s better and more realistic to teach children that situations don’t always end happily in real life.One thing l’ve always found objectionable in Walt Disney productions is the implication that with a bit of optimism and positive thinking life will always turn out beautifully.

Honestly some of the similarities are just due to film language and the similar materials. If you were going to shoot a storm scene, and a sinking boat, you are going to put these beats in anyhow. Even other movies with sinking ships and rescue are going to have overlapping elements. You need long shots to establish the distance, you will see a person floating holding onto debris, often a plank. They will sink below the waves at some point, because that's dramatic and will burst forward, probably after a bit of time to build up tension.

Of course there would be similar beats, but that would be due to the narrative of the original stories these adaptations are based on. The only difference would have to be in execution, as the 1975 adaptation is more close to Hans’ vision, in terms of morality.

Most of the examples were normal staging for ship sinking and I think finding the statue under water was in the original tale, so that overlap would be from sharing a text, as well.

The original one is really sad. I just wish I could see how the prince continued with his life after dealing with all that. The dolphin shouting Marina’s name though was a killer on the Japanese version. That was brutal. I believe that the guy who wrote “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” was onto something as the 80’s and 90’s was the era of the feel good psychology and no wonder all these Disney animations happened. Nowadays everything is dark and less colourful and tapped more into reality. I don’t know, I really liked Disney with the feel good era and now things are just too real and sad like the Japanese version.

"Quite different than the version that we know growing up on Disney" 🙋‍♂️ I actually read my mother's book of fairy tales growing up, and though I know the story of Disney's Little Mermaid, I have actually never watched the movie. In the original tale, at least the version I used to read, just stabbing the prince with the dagger her sisters gave her won't turn her back into mermaid. She actually has to let his blood flow into the floor and her legs, and that's what will turn them back into a tail.

I think the 1968 animation is more similar to the one Disney followed, but i wouldn't be surprised if the took inspiration from all the available versions they had. For the 1968 version, the silhouette under the moonlight, and the transformation from mermaid to human come to mind.

She watched the prince for months before deciding that he was the one she wanted to marry. And she wanted to marry a human because the human soul had an afterlife, whereas a mermaid's did not.

And this is even stated in the original ending- as mermaid she would need to marry a human to achieve the soul from him, but as a daughter of the air, she can achieve it by her own good deeds, so even failing within the marriage, her status is upgraded. We often regard these air spirits rather like "dead", but in 19th century air spirits were regarded as higher than water elementals, as they were kind of angels....

@@davidfarmer2193 Actually, death is not the right word, which got clearer in the Andersen original. Although Marina is ascending to heaven, she is not supposed to be dead, but rather transforming into a spirit. First mermaid, then human, then spirit of the air. In the original story line (also the fairy tale tradition Andersen makes use of), the mermaid wants to get a soul and can do this only with the help of a loving man. The traditional mermaid (like Undina) wouldn't achieve it because of the lover's lack of loyalty and fidelty and would in the end be doomed for evermore (or even transformed into a water fountain); but the little mermaid can earn a soul as spirit and is even closer to heaven, so she can be probably reunited with her prince (NOT kind of happy ending, but far better outcome...). Of course, there were in the 19th century also more happy endings for mermaids than in the original fairy tales; with mostly the human lover descending into the ocean for a reunion, but Andersen's story is very unique.

Sometimes I think that those tragical characters are much more in need to be appreciated. Enjoying is here a wrong word, but sometimes it makes me think more about life....I have a special fondness for characters who didn't get the full happiness, but mostly, they are side characters. There is no nee to villainaize a rival who gets it full, although you would envy and there is no need to play wrong, even if life is not always fair...

I have a friend whose father is a film producer in the children's entertainment industry (Not disney) and she works for him. She's told me that Disney wanted to have "The Little Mermaid" copyrighted in the 80's, but because this anime film existed, they couldn't copyright it. i can see why people would make the argument that Ariel is just rebellious and doesn't consider her consequences but that completely dismisses that the Character who's actually the most shortsighted and arguably needs to learn the bigger lesson, King Triton. Due to his rigidity and refusal to even listen to his daughter he leaves her no other option than to turn to someone else with the capability of helping her. the rest of the movie is Ariel learning a lesson. remember she's only 16 real life decisions don't happen the same way at that age as they do for say someone in their mid 30s. she has no idea that Ursula was literally using her as a pawn. and seeming trustworthy is usually one of those kinds of people's strong suits.

Had the deleted alternate ending of Ariel sincerely and tearfully apologizing to her father existed (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHeTkH2BrrV2racm29s ), it would have made Ariel more sympathetic to a lot of people, since one of the biggest criticisms of Ariel is that she never changes or learns anything in the course of the film. Even when Ariel did apologize for her actions in the final film, it felt less sincere because the voice acting and editing made it look and sound like Ariel was only apologizing out of duress and because she got CAUGHT signing an unscrupulous contract (not because she felt genuinely sorry for the unintentional harm her actions caused). The problem isn’t that Ariel makes mistakes (after all, that’s inevitable with teenagers). It’s that Ariel never takes responsibility for making them. The point of making mistakes is to learn from them. Not to make more mistakes. According to the film’s audio commentary track, the alternate ending was cut because then-Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg had just seen the 1988 action film “Die Hard”, and he told “The Little Mermaid” directors John Musker and Ron Clements to make the ending more like “Die Hard” (“Guys, guys, I want to see more ‘Die Hard’!”). YES, REALLY! In other words, Katzenberg wanted to make the climax more epic, which explains why Ursula becomes gigantic in the final film.

Triton was right to destroy her stuff because it was obtained unethically (she stole artifacts from sunken ships that had dead bodies in them). He did something really shitty to her, and she rebelled like many teenagers in her position would, doing something stupid along the way. But she does deal with the consequences and works with Eric to deal with Ursula. I don’t know what you mean when you say Ariel hasn’t dealt with her consequences. Maybe it has to do with sexism in Disney? I think female Disney protagonists tend to learn from their mistakes like the male protagonists do, although admittedly the males’ shortcomings tend to be more negative (like Aladdin’s dishonesty, Kuzco’s self-absorption). Sleeping Beauty is a good example of female protagonists dealing with mistakes. I’m talking about the three good fairies, not Aurora, since the plot is really driven by the fairies (both Autora and Phillip are relatively underdeveloped characters compared to any of the fairies). The good fairies’ mistakes have the heavy consequence of Maleficent’s spell coming true, and the good fairies then set out to free Phillip and help him confront Maleficent (and when you really read between the lines, there’s no way Phillip could’ve defeated her without their help). Given that the movie came out in 1959, I think it’s fair to say Disney is willing to have their female protagonists learn from mistakes (if anything maybe Disney’s recent trends are different, but Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid are among their best films)

I love Ariel and I don’t understand the hate she gets. She’s one of my very favorite princesses. She isn’t a spoiled brat that gets everything she wants and acts rashly. If you’ve seen her show you know Ariel has wanted to be human for a long time, way before she new who Eric was. If you could do anything to make your dreams come true wouldn’t you? She’s stubborn of course and might make quick decisions but what’s wrong with being either of those things? She’s also has such a big heart and dreams and makes me think a lot about what it means to be human

People hate Ariel because she never takes responsibility for the foolish decisions she makes. I will admit I made dumb decisions as a teenager (who hasn’t!), but at least I got punished for my actions. Ariel doesn’t get punished for her reckless actions. Instead she’s rewarded for it by becoming human and marrying the prince at the end. It also doesn’t help that Ariel is exceedingly dumb (seriously, she makes Madison from “Splash” look like Albert Einstein!). Despite Ursula laying out the consequences of her deal, Ariel still signs away her voice for legs and a vagina. Then again, Ariel also believed forks are used to comb hair, and smoking pipes make music, so why wouldn’t she believe Ursula’s belief that men prefer their ladies to be seen and not heard. Furthermore, Ariel is a terrible anthropologist. She doesn’t bother to check her sources, and instead accepts Scuttle’s blatant lies. And that’s not getting into Ariel’s graverobbing. She steals “human artifacts” from a shipwreck that contains HUMAN SKELETONS inside! Then again, Ariel is like “It belongs in a museum, I mean, GROTTO!”. Honestly, had the deleted alternate ending of Ariel sincerely and tearfully apologizing to her father existed (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHeTkH2BrrV2racm29s ), it would have made Ariel more sympathetic to a lot of people, since as I said before, one of the biggest criticisms of Ariel is that she never changes or learns anything in the course of the film. Even when Ariel did apologize for her actions in the final film, it felt less sincere because the voice acting and editing made it look and sound like Ariel was only apologizing out of duress and because she got CAUGHT signing an unscrupulous contract (not because she felt genuinely sorry for the unintentional harm her actions caused). According to the film’s audio commentary track, the alternate ending was cut because then-Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg had just seen the 1988 action film “Die Hard”, and he told “The Little Mermaid” directors John Musker and Ron Clements to make the ending more like “Die Hard” (“Guys, guys, I want to see more ‘Die Hard’!”). YES, REALLY! In other words, Katzenberg wanted to make the climax more epic, which explains why Ursula becomes gigantic in the final film.

I love that somebody did a comparison between both movie versions I love! Though why are you saying Marina’s name very differently than her name is pronounced 100 times throughout the film? Especially when the sisters call for her on the ship, yelling, Mariiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiina! Lol Am I the only one who actually watched and loved the anime version even more than the Disney version? And trust me, Disney’s The Little Mermaid makes my top 3 all time favorite Disney films! When I saw the anime version of the story after I saw the Disney version in theatres. It was aired on tv around the time it came out at which I was psyched to see as I just loved the film I saw in theatres. Well......having absolutely zero idea, how the Hand Christian Anderson movie went, or maybe should say, didn’t even probably know at that point how Disney tweaked a lot of the classic fairy tales as some of them would have been too graphic and shocking had those scenes been chosen to be added in the films! But why do I love the anime version that much more? Because of that shocking ending where I looked at my sister as it ended and we were baffled! It was like......what just happened? She jumps into the sea and dies when she realized her deal with the sea witch failed??? As the years went on and watched that version 100 times more, as I experienced the usual heartbreak we’ve all gone through as we have crushes on that boy or girl in school , especially in Hs, where he or she was all we thought about to the point where, I wish I had a shot in meeting a sea witch to make a deal in hopes of winning that crush! Ultimately when you realize that no, it’s never happening, I appreciated the movie that much more because even though the author said we all love a happy ending in the movies we watch, I disagree to an extent, because in life, some of us are lucky to get that happily ever after with the love of their life, while some of us experienced more heartbreak than we care to admit, and can appreciate the anime version, because by the end, the biggest storyline point is that of a realistic one. That a heartbreak is something that pains us for a long time. Took me over a year to get over someone, and at which I had a breakdown , drank til I blacked out until my family felt I’d become too far gone and made the decision in having me hospitalized for a week. It was a nightmare. One of the most traumatizing things I look back on, but know it had to be done because it was like I was on a Suicide mission, not even realizing. I simply drank to black out as it felt as though if I continued doing that, the amazing memories and heartbreak would go away, but that was more like a very brief and temporary amnesia as it all came back to me the day I woke up in that hospital. Didn’t plan on telling something that kinda changed me, but in a good way, in that, I’ve always been independent and never needed anyone to make me happy or complete me, but I kinda stepped out of character as I fell so hard for this person that I kinda forgot the great strengths I once had. Still single, but happy and content where it bothered me as all my friends would eventually meet the one, start a family, and would slowly and eventually lose contact with them as their new life was all they cared about. And when I was like the last man standing when even my bitchy fat and obese friend actually meets a guy, who she marries and has a kid with, where we were like, how did she land HIM? Wasn’t this hot stud but never imagined the two of them together. And sorry for the body shame, but the friendship recently ended after stabbing me in the back but whatever. Miserable person that will most likely lose him at some point as he became her world and her clingy es, I’m sure will drive him away. Boy am I all over the place in this message, but finally, yes, every now and then I like to watch a tearjerker, because if every movie ended with a happily ever after, I’d think it would actually sadden us all, as were saying hen is my happily ever after going to come! It’s suppose to! As every movie ends that way! I still watch it til this day, because it’s just touching. Especially when she says what she says at the end, when she realizes she lost him, and what’s even more heartbreaking as he sees her jump off the ship hoping to stop her, he has flashbacks to when it was she who did save him, where he realizes he married the wrong girl as he only remembered the part where that girl saw him and helped him get up and made sure he was ok, where he thought it was her. My only problem with that was, why was he hoping to see her again, as his heart was set on the girl who saved him? After she made sure he was ok, what happened? She took off because she had something more important to do? Lol. But still. Can overlook that part as it made for a soap opera like style as they are shocked to run into each other when he had no desire to meet the princess.

I can relate to your message a lot. Those who have suffered infatuation and the heartbreak can really appreciate this movie. The heartbreak of this story I could feel even as a little child when I watched this movie. It feels like the story of my life- one of unrequited love, sadness, heartbreak, and loss. Somehow the ego tricks me into believing that these fantasies and desires of attaining love in the world of form can happen, and I keep prolonging the dream with false hope. Just like the sea witch gives the little mermaid false hope that as long as she has legs instead of a tail, that she would have a chance to win the Prince’s love. But the happy ending in this world of form is always just out of reach, as the ego always moves the goal posts in form to keep the dream going. I saw this pattern of repeated wishmaking and disappointment in the movie Bedazzled (1967) as well. Wishing things were different with great hope can only lead to dashed dreams. In a sense, the little mermaid was tricked by her own blindedness in love for a form, but what the ego made to trick her to fall into death, God used to lead her straight to Heaven. Instead of killing the Prince in grievance for not having loved her, she chooses to release her own ego/body instead and preserve her love for him forever, becoming a symbol of eternal love. She learns in the end that her goal is not to get love and a form outcome from the Prince, but rather to become love itself. “I love him more than life itself. Let him live.” I feel Marina is far more wise and advanced in her resolve and thinking than me. “It is wonderful when you are loved, but to love, yourself is an equally great happiness.” I wish I could be like her. Though part of my mind still perceives this story to be so sad, this is also a trick by the ego to think that “loss” of the body is a loss of myself. I am not a body. The whole story feels orchestrated by God to help me realize that I am not a body, I am free. For I am still as God created me.

Well I do recall randomly watching the anime version as a kid which was completely by chance. Toei back the did go for some interesting things that I don't think they'll bit her going for these days since they seem to have taken Disney renaissance inspirations for how to execute a story in some cases. But anyway yeah hans Christian Andersen is always a case where you can never be 100 percent sure what his thought process was but he still left an impact with his bitter sweet ended stories. Toei version is almost 1 for 1 like the book but given when it got made it is pretty cheesy even by Japan film standards today and as for Disney it is familiar yet also different which honestly does actually capture what it means to "adapt" something. You know the original but you want it to represent what you have in mind for your vision while keep respect to the source material which I do think the Disney version does do well despite people's complaints who don't want to see it. What a lot of people do miss is how the Disney version does have Ariel go through a lot of stuff and there is sacrifice to her choices and she wanted to see more of what's outside her own world and Ariels motivations weren't just she wanted Eric as there were a few other factors. She wanted to see the human world too but the big blow came from her father's outburst and destroyed her stuff which he dies regret later and served as that final straw that makes her go see Ursula but even then all the way to that final moment she signs the contract you can tell Ariel was hesitating cause of what she would be giving up which was her life in the ocean. As for her getting what she wanted in the end well while that is true but again misses crucial details in the fact that her father made the decision to grant her wish where if you paid attention to his character you know this wasn't am easy choice for him as he is accepting the fact his daughter is leaving home to find her own happiness and gave her his blessing at long last to go find what makes her happy. I get it's not what hans Christian Andersen wrote but it is a well done adaption none the less that had some well done pay offs if you paid attention to the details. While they could've gone for what hans wrote let's not forget the bigger financial disaster Disney had was the black cauldron and Katzenberg would never have green lit another project like that again as that film almost killed Disney. Great mouse detective did bounce it back technically first but little mermaid really did save the company from what was a dire situation for them. A lot of the comparisons are likely coincidence and for some points toei probably did some of the original art work but that's about it. It's not really anything as notable as the whole kimba the site lion situaon for the lion king or how frozen misses the point of the ice queen even more than most Disney adaptions cause it focused too much on trying to course correct on tropes

The Japanese version was cheesy? In what way? I didn’t find it cheesy at all. It hasn’t aged one bit, while the Disney version is cringey as hell and it’s much newer. Just the fact that the anime version sticks to the original story and keeps the sad ending takes a lot of courage as it can alienate immature audiences. It was so classy and wise as many animes are. But Disney completely changed the story to pander to audiences that could not take the true message of the story. Wow, I remember this movie (I think I still have it too) and according to my therapist, no it did not scar me for life and no, seeing the scene where Marina dies does not bring up the ending where her dolphin friend is searching for her calling out her name. No I am not on my couch rocking myself while crying right now...I am not. Moving on, Disney has a long history of copy right violations. I wouldn't have put it past them to have seen the Japanese version and to have lifted much from it. That being said, I am not sure how many ways, artistically, they could have separated the two stories overall. It's still the same environment after all, and the same creature and time period. Overall, you are going to hit the same notes. But honestly, it's Kimba before Kimba.

Given the Kimba/Lion King situation, it wouldn't surprise me if this was the case. I've always personally felt like there's traces of the Shirley Temple's Storybook "Little Mermaid" in the Disney version as well (makes the witch a "villain," makes the daughter rebellious and insist she's "not a child" to the father/King, gives the witch a backstory with the character's family - only this time its the grandmother and not the father, said backstory results in the parent figure sacrificing themselves to save the mermaid in a quasi-blackmail situation). And like the anime version the Shirley Temple version has a blonde mermaid and a happy ending (although inexplicably the mermaid keeps her voice in the Shirley Temple version). Its one of the better known episodes (one of the only ones still in wide circulation) and its possible this could have been in the back of their minds if they had ever seen it on TV as kids as it was a very popular anthology series with children in the 50s/60s. As with the anime films, its unlikely that much of this will ever be fully determined though

And also, the Greek Ariel is different from Hans’ mermaid, because Greek Mythology Ariel can take both human and mermaid form, which makes the Greek connection pointless and stupid, because Disney’s Ariel is more of a bastard child.

I have another hypothesis (I won't call it a theory, because a theory would require closer examination). Makers of both versions were exposed to the same illustrations that more than a dozen illustrators inked over the previous 150 years or so. The scenes that were similar to each other are also similar to many storybook illustrations. Similarities in the storm scenes are especially striking.

They are view as the poor man's version of Disney if you seen any Goodtimes film. Aladdin, Snowwhite, Sleeping Beauty ete. So in the DVD section around 2003 I saw the Little Mermaid that "Look" like the 1975 film. And I am like there is no way they would go low to mock a anime, mock Disney cover ok, but the 1975 film? Bought the DVD, put it in the DVD player and it was Goodtimes 1990's Little Mermaid. I was pretty upset that Goodtimes pull a fast one over me. It almost match the Anime cover and I felled for it. I had that same issue with The Sword in the Stone 1963, Mary Poppins 1964, The Black Cauldron 1985 based on Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander, Artemis Fowl 2020 based on the book by Eoin Colfer, Peter Pan and Wendy 2023. Where Hollywood companies like Disney completely alters the story and make it mostly unrecognizable from the book and most likely with the 2023 Little Mermaid remake. So in this case, I prefer the 1975 Japanese Anime version of The Little Mermaid because they were very faithful to the book and it is the best version of The Little Mermaid even though it had a sad ending.

The Disney version has the best happy ending when Ariel got her voice back, Prince Eric defected Ursula and Ariel turned back as a human again and she and Eric got married! 🧜🏻‍♀️🎶🎵🧙🏻‍♀️💍🤴🏻👸🏼

I like Disney's the little mermaid I love the movies and the series. And although them with the virginal little mermaid movie was good the play was great you should really watch it sometime I especially love they were Ariel took the shell and she smashed it and stopped Ursula herself and apologized for dad and ending I can dream of.

In the 1970s, Japan often animated world-famous fairy tales. Ningyohime is one of them. Since it was nearly 15 years before The Little Mermaid, it is impossible for it to be based on The Little Mermaid. The Lion King also has many similarities to Osamu Tezuka's Jungle Empire, but again, Osamu Tezuka made it much earlier. There are many similarities, but it is just a matter of enjoying them as different works.

It's Japanese that an original work wasn't adapted for a happy ending, but I think it's a reason. Destiny won't be at all.
