Fun fact the Storm Elites along with the Storm Jackals and Storm Grunts were used as Shock Troopers during the Human-Covenant War. To in a way their looks actually reflect their nature on the battlefield. The Covenant didn't use the Storm Elites, Grunts, and Jackals much though they left that type of combat mostly up to the Brutes. Hence why they were almost never seen during the great war. Also the Halo 4 and 5 Zealot Elites get their color from the artifact hunter Zealots like the ones from Reach that went after Forerunner artifacts exclusively and their armor comes from a Elite colony called Hesduros which is also where the new Ghost, Banshee, Wraith, and I think Spirit dropship come from. And Jul 'Mdamas Covenant faction started on Hesduros.

Can people just accept the fact that the designers just change the look of things because of game play reasons? Now a days everything that is changed is considered canon, It is just an excuse for companies so people won't yell at them. Example, Halo 4 and 5 made the covenant generic bad guy monster aliens, Why? So we have a good reason to shoot them, Same with reach, The elites were made more thuggish and lost their pupils, so we do not identify with them that much. We see them more as animals instead of actual intelligent creatures. If you are shooting something that speaks your language, has eyes with pupils that we can see where their looking and can look back at you, you don't want to kill it as much. This is called the uncanny valley affect. Link: (wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley) This is what movie directors and game developers do so we sympathy with the aliens that they want us to like, and see which ones we are suppose to see as the enemy.

I prefer a blend of the halo reach elite armor designs with the halos 2 and 3 designs, the idea of sangheili sub species also sounds like a cool way to have both elite designs (halo 2 anniversary along with halo 4-5) to exist side by side, something akin to the jackles and their subspecies~
